Chapter 6: Using the enemies as help
The lady stood behind the desk, reading over what Agent Wolfe had typed up for Sean and Mason telling them what they would get in return if they helped. I swear she read it like five times before handing the papers back to me. "Who are you here to see again?" She asked, looking at Heath for a bit. "Sean Dryer and Mason Evert." I said for maybe the fourth time already. "Okay, just take a seat and we'll get them ready for you." She said as she grabbed at her walkie talkie, reading off what I guess was Sean and Mason's prisoner number to someone else.
"What did Luke say to you back there?" Heath said as he took the seat next to me, and I turned my face away from him.
"Nothing. We just-just got in a fight, that's all." I said.
"Sure." Heath said.
I rolled my eyes at him before I sank more into the chair, not at all liking how this place felt. Jail was the last place I ever wanted to end up, the building always just left bumps on my skin and made me felt so helpless. I looked up when I saw a male officer walking towards us, a clipboard in hand. "Are you two here to see-" He paused as he looked at the names. "Mason Evert and Sean Dryer?" He said looking at us. Heath stood up and nodded his head. "Yes, sir." The officer lowered the clipboard and watched as I stood up. "Follow me." He said and we did so.
He led us down a small hall, past a few doors that had the name of the rooms printed across them off to the side and we came to a stop as he stopped in front of a metal detector. "I need you to walk through this, it's just for safety. Miss." He said leading his arm out for me towards the machine and I nodded my head, handing him my phone and a few other things and I made my way through it, when it let out loud beeps, the officer looked at me confused and made his way over to me. "Do you have anything on you?" He asked. I shook my head no. He sighed. "Let me pat you down." He did so and I saw that Heath was watching closely. The officer stood back up straight, rubbing his head. "That's odd, must just be the machine, you're good to go." He said before looking at Heath. Heath gave up his stuff before he walked through, the machine not beeping for him, that was odd. "Please follow me." The officer said leading us down yet another hall and when he stopped in front of the room, I saw through the thin line of glass a person sitting at a table. "Just yell or knock." The officer said as he opened the door and we both stepped in.
I looked over just as the person looked up at me, his face showing he was surprised. After the officer left, I looked back at him, his eyes meeting mine. I forgot how much his eyes made me almost buckle at my knees. He raised one eyebrow as he looked between Heath and I, leaning back in the chair and pulling his hands as much the cuffs would let him into his lap.
"Whatever it is, I didn't do it." His voice was rocky and the dark bags under his eyes showed how tired he was.
"You didn't do anything, Sean." I said, walking over the table.
"Then what did I do to get a visit from you?" He asked, looking over at Heath.
I looked over at Heah who meet my connected and nodded before I looked back over at Sean who was looking at both of us. "I-we need your help." I said and Sean snorted.
"Right, you need my help, do you even see who you're talking to?" He said raising his cuffed hands. "What do you really need?" He asked.
Heath stepped forward. "We need your help finding someone."
"Why?" Sean said looking at me.
Heath looked at me and I gave him the answer. "Because they took Ayden." I said and that seemed to draw in Sean's attention.
"What do you mean they took Ayden? Like kidnapped-" Heath cut him off.
"They kidnapped him."
Sean just blinked.
"Do you at least have a name?"
I swallowed. "He calls himself DeadLock." And when I said the name, Sean arched his brow, looking at the table.
"Why do you need me? I'm helpless. Nothing special about me."
"That's why we're going to ask Mason, with maybe both of your help, we can figure out who this man is and get Chip back, what do you say Sean? It might get you out of this place for a few weeks." I said, placing my hands on the table, locking eyes with Sean.
Please say yes.
Sean was quiet for a little, deep in thought as I watch him look at his cuffed hands, his mouth moving in a weird way.
"I'm in." He finally said.
*****
Mason just looked at us, his hands on the table as he read the paper on what Agent Wolfe said what would happen if they were to help us. His eyes scanned over it like it was nothing, his fingers running over a few letters here and there.
"And Sean is doing this with me?" He said looking up.
"Yes." Heath said as I leaned against the wall.
"If Sean said yes, then I'm in too, I guess." He said looking over at me as I was deep in thought.
Luke's words running through my head. Did he really mean what he said? He couldn't off, he would never, then again....
"Skyler?" Heath said, snapping his fingers in front of my face, making me snap out of my deep thinking and looking up at him, seeing that Mason was being taken out of the room by a guard.
"They both said yes." He said as we walked out of the room, getting out things back.
"Thanks for coming with me, Heath." I said and he smiled.
"No problem, now we can only cross our fingers that they will be of help for us."
"Ya, be of help." I mumbled as I looked down at the road.
I walked into my house, closing the door behind me as I did so, hearing the TV playing. "Noah?" I called out. There was shuffling making me slowly walk into the kitchen, seeing Noah stretched across the couch eating popcorn.
"Oh, hey Skyler!" He said sitting up and giving me a no teeth smile.
"Hey, where is dad?" I asked.
"He called saying he was going to be late and to cook our own food, just to not burn down the house." He said laughing a little.
I just smiled. "Thanks." I slowly made my way towards the kitchen, looking up when Noah sat up more.
"Oh, and Luke called. He said he called your cell phone like 70 times and you didn't answer so he said to call him back when you got home." He said, walking over to me and setting the bowl of popcorn off to the side.
"Are you okay, sis?" he asked, leaning on the counter.
"Just peachy." I said, smiling as I looked at him.
"Okay, you just seem like you're lost in that mind of yours." he said tapping his head and I laughed.
"Just go back to watching your strange show, I'll be upstairs if you need me." I said as I walked past him and made my way upstairs.
When I got into my room, I turned on the light and closed the door, leaning against it as I let the tears fall. What was happening to me? I rubbed my eyes as I walked over to my dresser, picking up a picture of Izzy, Luke and I last summer, my fingers running over Izzy's smiling face. "Why can't you just come back to life and make me forget everything." I mumbled as a tear fell onto the picture frame.
I set the photo face down and walked over to my bed, sinking into the mattress. If Luke thought I was the monster, then maybe I should just show him. I looked down at my phone, turning it on to see all of the miss calls and texts.
