Chapter 38: Little Voice of an Angel
"Please!" Ryan Hill's cries for mercy could be heard.
"Where is my daughter, Hill?!" Deadlock's voice growled as the sound of a gun being loaded filled the speakers.
A whimper was heard as the sound of glass broke before Hill's voice whimpered. "Please Donavan, I only did what was I ordered to do! You would understand! I didn't want to hurt your wife but she ordered me to!" He yelled the last few words as his voice seem to shake with fear
"Who ordered you to?" His voice didn't even break down to the pleading of Ryan Hill.
"Your Boss, she was looking into all your files, the cases that you talked about specially. She wanted you as a champion, her champion. I didn't want to but with a gun pointed to your head, wouldn't you of done the same thing? Please Donavan, I have people I care for, my sons-" Mr. Hill's begging was cut short with Donavan's voice.
"Don't lie to me Ryan. You don't care for one of your boys. The first time I meet you you spat at Ayden like he was trash that won't fit in the garbage. How could you hate something so much that was made because of you?"
It seemed things were calming down before Hill's voice let out a loud cry, the sound of wood breaking before grunting could be heard.
"Don't test me Ryan! I can put a bullet into your head before you could even blink!" Donavan yelled as it sounded like he hit a wall.
A light chuckled filled the speakers as Hill spoke. "Then do it Donavan, kill me. It's what she made you into anyways. Even if you were to find your daughter, I'm sure she won't want to see who her daddy has become. A killer." His voice filled with venom and in seconds a gunshot cut all sound off before Donavan spoke again.
"I may be a killer but I would never hurt my daughter." His voice fell slightly as the sound of boots crushing glass before everything went dead.
No hints, no clues, nothing was given where Donavan's daughter may be. Skyler had listened to the recorder that was found in Donavan's pocket more than three times and she still jumped every time the bullet went off.
Reaching out her hand, she slowly closed her lap top, resting her chin on her hands as she looked at her bedroom wall blankly. She had returned home after meeting with Donavan and had gone through more than eight websites of fostering homes for kids. It was a lot harder when trying to find a six year old when all you have is a picture of her when she was just a year old.
Letting out a sigh, she grabbed at the picture Donavan had given her, the large blue eyed baby looking at her. It was clear that she had black hair but Skyler didn't know where to start. Many of the six year old girls she had looked at her were all blonde.
"Where are you Mila?" She asked softly as she ran her finger over the photo.
Setting the photo down, she sat up and placed her lap top onto her lap. She had to start from the beginning, read every file there was possible out there with all the six year olds. Mila had to be alive and Skyler was to go prove she was.
As she typed away on her key board, pulling links up after links, a knock on her bedroom door caused her fingers to stop in mid air.
"Yes?" She asked softly as she lowered the computer screen down, watching as the door opened a crack to shower her brother's face.
"Is something wrong Noah?" She suddenly asked placing her lap top to the side.
"Nothing in wrong, it's just someone is downstairs for you." Noah edged the door open more, stepping in half way.
"Who is someone?" Skyler watched as he walked fully in before careful closing the door behind him. His eyes meeting with hers.
"Luke, he wants to talk. I tried to tell him you didn't want to but he pushed the door open." Noah whispered as he glanced over his shoulder before looking at Skyler again.
"He's down stairs. Says he won't leave until you speak to him," He moved away from the door as Skyler stood up, her eyes casting over to her lap top.
She didn't even say a word as she made her way downstairs, turning the corner to meet Luke. Dressed in a black coat and a beanie over his spiky brown hair, she could only stop half way when he turned to meet her.
"I don't know what part you don't understand Luke but I don't want to talk." She could only watch as he pulled his gloved hands out of his pockets as he swallowed.
"Skyler, I know you're mad but please. I need to talk to you." His voice was slower than normal as he looked at her with his pleading eyes.
"Luke, I don't-"
"Please Sky." His words stung as she glanced away, seeing Noah standing at the end of the stairs.
"Fine." It was all that could make it past her lips as she grabbed at her coat, slipping it over her shoulders as her feet slide into her shoes.
"I'll back in a few alright, Noah?" She said as she glanced at her younger brother who seemed to want to say something but only smiled.
"Alright."
As she followed behind Luke, she stuffed her hands in her pockets, refusing to make any eye contact. When she looked up at him, she watched as the white puff of air appeared each time he breathed out, his eyes staying towards the ground as they each slowly walked.
Stopping in her trackers, Skyler finally spoke up as she wrapped her arms around herself.
"Luke, what did you want to talk about?" She wanted nothing more to turn around and leave but something seemed off as he too stopped, turning to look at her. He let out a easy breath before he looked her, his nose slightly red.
"Skyler, I just wanted to talk. Please. I know you're angry at me but please, I need someone to talk to." His body turned to face her as he looked down at his hands, Skyler's eyes moving down to see a folded piece of paper.
"I saw Izzy." He whispered, his hands seeming to lightly shake.
"She-she screamed. Thought I was someone who was going to hurt her." His voice was light like a feather as he finally looked at up towards her, letting her see for the first time his eyes were blood shot.
"Skyler. I want everything to back to being normal. Before the party happened, before I lost both you and my sister. I want everything back the way it was before." His hands tightened around the slip of paper as he whipped at his eyes.
"Luke, nothing can go back to being normal. Nothing ever will." She took a light step back as she watched him.
He blinked a few times before looking up towards the stars. "Skyler, I just want to say I'm sorry okay? I know I was being a jack when I called Ayden a monster. Izzy is alive but she won't be her same old self. She might as will be a alien." His lips fell into a straight line as he glanced at me.
"What do you really want to talk about Luke? I told you I was done." Though she was annoyed, her voice came out soft as she watched him look down at the folded slip.
"Tobias came by early. You know that boy you saved from the Ball, Lewis or something like that?" He murmur to himself before speaking again. "This was sent to him and he quickly called Tobias." He turned towards me as he reached the paper out towards her.
Taking the slip of paper, she unfolded and took a breath in at the picture that showed. It was a boy who looked to be 15, tears running down his cheeks as his eyes plead through the photo. His hands looks to be tied behind him, a cloth tied into his mouth.
"Lewis says it's his brother." Luke spoke up as she looked towards him.
"Why are you showing me this?"
"Because, Lewis said he wanted your help. He's afraid that they're going to kill his brother. He's the only family he has left." Luke placed his hands into his pockets before looking at her. "I know you want me to leave and I will, but please. Just help Lewis."
Skyler opened her mouth to speak but when she looked up Luke was walking away, his head down with his hands stuffed into his pocket as he left her on the sidewalk alone.
*
"Noah?" Skyler called out as she closed the house door behind her.
Silence greeted her ears as she took of her coat, resting it on the hanger as she looked around before calling out again.
"Noah?" It was normal for Noah to not answer her because he would normally turn the TV up loud. But this time there was no noise.
Skyler wasn't able to even move forward before a frantic cry reached her ears.
"SKMLR!" She didn't even have to be genius to know who the frantic voice belonged to as she raced into the kitchen.
Stopping in her tracks, her eyes went wide to see Noah tied down to a chair, his arms zip tied behind his back as he shook his head back and forth, struggling against the zip ties that kept him seated, a cloth finishing the job of silencing him.
"I thought you were never coming home." A sweet voice spoke.
Skyler was quick, grabbing at one of their sharp kitchen knives as the figure stepped out from the shadows.
"No need for that sweetie. I just want to talk, daughter to mother." The figure that stepped out was no other then Rosalia. Her shimmering white hair pulled back as a white dress covered over her body. Her red lips formed into a light smile as she placed her hand on Noah's shoulder getting a sharp growl from him in response.
With the knife in hand, Skyler looked at her with shock. It was Deadlock's boss. Skyler remembered the first time she had meet her when her and Noah were tied up in one of Deadlock's rooms.
"What are you doing here?" She all but forced the words out, watching her carefully as she kept a good grip on the knife.
"I wanted to see my daughter, so decided to stop by." She simply said, her blue eyes gleaming.
"So let's have a normal conversation and not hurt each other." She gestured to the knife.
"Normal? You call tying people up normal?!" Skyler didn't know what to do. Her cell phone was upstairs, and she knew that by the time she would be able to get the cops to come Rosalia would be long gone.
"Please sweetie, lower the knife." As she spoke she slowly lifted up her sleeve to show a sharp dagger ready to be used.
Skyler swallowed as she meet eyes with Noah who seemed to bite down harder on the cloth that rested in his mouth before he looked over at her, giving yet another tug at the zip ties.
"I really don't want to hurt either of you. Set the knife on the counter and push it towards me." Rosalia ordered sharply.
Slowly Skyler set the knife onto the counter before giving it a light push, watching as her only protection landed in the hands of a monster.
"Now then, to clear all of this up." Rosaila took the knife into her hand, inspecting it before her attention was drawn to Noah who let a muffled noise.
"No sweetie, mother doesn't want to hurt you so please, shut up." Noah only growled at her before casting a look over to Skyler who spoke up.
"Why are you here?" Thousands of questions were running throughout her head and those were the only words that seemed to make it past her lips.
Rosalia lightly chuckled as she moved forward, her eyes fixed on the family picture that rested on the wall. Turning her attention away from them Skyler could only watch as she reached her hands out and touched the frame, her eyes fixed on Skyler's dad.
"Oh Augustus, still so strong." She purred as she ran her red painted nails over the picture.
"How do you know my father's name?" Skyler ordered. She didn't care if this women had a blade up her sleeve.
A light chuckle escaped her lips as she set the frame back down, bring her hand up and swiping at a lose strand of white hair, her red pained nails gleaming in the light like blood.
"I remember the day you were born. Those large eyes that held the world you looked up at me the first time I got to hold you. My first child." Rosaila ran her hand over her sleeve as Skyler looked at her in shock.
"You can't-you're not my mother." Skyler hissed as she took a step back, it seeming almost harder to breath now.
Rosaila only looked at her, her eye lashes blinking over her bright blue eyes as she lowered her hands, the white gown seeming to flow over her body. She couldn't be her mother. Her dad wouldn't of married a women like her, not a monster.
"I know you spoke with Donavan, and mostly likely heard the truth of what Ryan had said. But I am your mother, Skyler." Her voice was lightly as she watched Skyler look at her in great horror.
"Why would you leave us than?" Skyler's words came out in a forced whisper as she had to steady herself against the counter.
"When I married your father, I left a life that I only hopped I had left for good, but things came up and I couldn't risk your father or any of you getting hurt because of my past mistakes. So I left, left the state, left the gird, and left my family. I was a mistress to a high training business and when I met your father getting coffee, everything changed. I couldn't let him or you two get hurt. I didn't want to but I had to." Her blue eyes seem to stay on Skyler as she watched her look away, her chest raising fast.
"Things started to go for the worst when they started taking teens, and I nearly lost it when you were one of many teens selected to be taken into the dark life. I tried everything to make sure nether of you were going to be dragged into that life but I failed." Rosaila raised her chin as Skyler looked at her, her eyes darkening.
"That has nothing to do with Donavan Day and his family. Why them? Why did you have to do such a horrifying thing to a man like Donavan?" Skyler's voice lowered as she watched her mother look away.
"That information is for another-"
"No, that information is for right now. Donavan is being locked up for killing a women he loved with more than just his heart, her loved her with his life. You took his daughter away from him and his life. You made him into something that is going to destroy you." Skyler's voice rose as she looked at her mother who's lips curled into a deep frown.
"4869" She whispered, causing Skyler to look at her with narrowed eyes.
"What?"
"4869." she looked up at Skyer. Her light blue eyes seemed to be like ice.
"I'll see you later my darling. Tell your father I said hello." Rosaila nodded her head and Noah's cries of warning reached her ears.
"Muk omt!" He struggled against the zip ties but his warning were too late as something connected to the back of her head sending Skyler to fall into darkness.
*
"Skyler, what happened?" Agent Wolfe asked for the fourth time as the young girl kept a ice pack pressed to her head.
Everything had been a large blur up until this point for Skyler. She had woken up to her dad hovering over her calling the cops and now her head was screaming with a major head ache and Agent Wolfe trying to get her to tell what happened.
But that was the problem. Skyler didn't know if it was all real or not. Noah had the burning around his wrists from struggling and she had the head ache to prove it may of happened but she couldn't believe it.
"Skyler," Agent Wolfe snapped her out of her thoughts with a snap of his figures, his eyes gleaming at her with worry.
"What happened?" He asked again, his voice harsh.
"Nothing happened." She merely whispered as she looked over to see Noah looking over at her will a medic looked over his bruised wrists.
"Skyler, I didn't get called down here because you were just sleeping. I was called here because your brother was tied to a chair struggling like a mad person with you knocked out on the floor." Agent Wolfe didn't want to play games, he know something up but she was keeping it to herself.
Skyler only lowered the icepack as she glanced up at Agent Wolfe. He had his arms crossed over his chest as he looked down at her. Sighing, he knelt down to her level and spoke, making sure to keep his voice low.
"Who came over here?" He kept a hand placed on her shoulder as she looked away.
"Rosaila, she's Donavan's boss." Skyler finally spoke as she felt Agent Wolfe's hand so stiff on her shoulder.
"Rosaila? Wasn't that-" he stopped in mid sentence to see Skyler close her eyes.
"Yes, she was my mother. I don't know how she got here." Skyler placed the icepack on her head as she looked up at him, watching as he seemed to look somewhere else.
"But she gave me four numbers, 4869. That was the last thing that I remember before blacking out." And the fact that she had told those things was the only thing she could remember.
Skyler just wanted to know what the numbers meet. A phone number, a code, a clue-Skyler slowly looked up, her the icepack slipping from her head as she looked a Agent Wolfe.
"It's a number to finding Mila." Skyler whispered before she pushed herself up, watching as Agent Wolfe was right behind her.
"If I remember correctly, when a child is entered into the adoption system, they have numbers. That's how they pull up all the children's' files!" Skyler flipped on her computer as she pulled up one of the websites, typing in the last four numbers before hitting enter and watching the screen start to load.
As the screen pulled up, Skyler felt her heart leap as she looked at the only file that appeared. The whole room seemed to go still as she read the information, not believe anything that was happening.
"She's-she's-" Skyler couldn't form the words as she looked down.
"When is Donavan being sent to court?" Skyler turned to face Agent Wolfe seeing he was just as shocked as she was.
"Tomorrow morning-but Skyler-" He called after her as quickly grabbed at her jacket, ignoring the throbbing pain that was forming in her head as ran towards the car.
She had to get to Mila before Donavan was moved or none of this would ever be solved. Turning on the car, Skyler knocked the car into drive before taking off.
*
"Hello! How may I help you?" As Skyler entered she turned her head to see a lady greeting her.
The lady looked to be older as she stood up from behind the desk where Skyler saw the computer screen. Smiling, Skyler moved over to her, her feet lightly touching the carpet below her.
"Can I help you with anything?" The lady asked again as she lowered herself back into her seat looking up at Skyler.
"Yes, I would like to see a 6 year old girl. Her last numbers are 4869." Skyler was quick to the topic, watching at the lady pulled it up before a smile went across her face.
"Aw yes, little Mila. She's a sweet a little thing. Let me take you back to meet her." The lady stood up as she entered a few keys on a black keypad before the door clicked opened.
The hall they walked down was filled with a peaceful feeling as Skyler looked at the pictures off the kids that hung on the walls.
"Mila is a sweet little girl but greatly shy so I don't know if there will be much talking." The lady lightly noted as she stopped in front of a brown door.
Skyler could only nod as the door was opened, exposing the children that played inside. As Skyler stepped inside, she looked over all of the children looking for Mila before she stopped. Sitting in the far corner of the room, her curled hair held up by two pink ribbons as a light singing voice could be heard sat Mila.
"Mila." The lady called out causing the girl to turn her head around, her bright blue eyes meeting Skyler.
Skyler could only look at the young girl as they both held eye contact. Resting in her arms was a stuffed horse. Slowly kneeling down, Skyler gave her a warm smile as the young girl looked at her with her curious blue eyes.
Looking over the girl, Skyler couldn't help but reach her hand out. "My name is Skyler." Keeping the smile on, she watch as Mila looked at her hand before bring her hand out and lightly touching it.
Looking up at the old lady, Skyler told her why she was here.
"Have you heard about Donavan Day?" She asked, watching as the lady's head looked at her.
"Yes, such a tragic thing. Killed his wife before ending his young child, I don't know what kind of a man he is but I'm happy he's getting locked away."
Standing back up, Skyler glanced at the lady.
"He didn't kill his daughter, Mila is his daughet," The lady shock her head before looking at Skyler like she had just slapped her.
"But that can't be-"
"If you need prove, I'll give it to you but he's going to be sent away to court to where who knows how long he's going to be locked away." Skyler glanced at Mila who was watching both of them, the horse being hugged against her chest.
"Please. Donavan Day is not a monster and if you let me take her to see him, you'll see what everyone else needs to see. He loves her and wants to know she's alive and is okay." Skyler finished her last words watching as the lady glanced down at Mila before returning to look at her.
"Alright." The lady spoke as she looked up at Skyler.
"Mila, you're going to do with his kind girl here, okay?" The lady said as she knelt down to face the young girl who looked up at Skyler.
And since she had looked at Skyler, she parted her tiny lips as she reached her hand out towards Skyler as she spoke. "Okay."
*
Skyler slowly walked with Mila as they made their way to the doors of the police station. Mila's small hand holding onto Skyler's finger as she hugged her horse close to her chest. It felt like a large fog had been lifted up as Skyler looked down at the young girl who seemed to be focused on the building ahead. Her eyes were just like Donavan's, bright and kind giving as Mila looked up at her.
"My daddy is in there?" Her voice was light as she looked up at Skyler, her hand seeming to squeeze her finger.
Taking in a easy breath, Skyler knelt down to match her eye level as she brushed some of Mila's curly hair out of her face.
"He is." Was all she could out as she looked at the young girl.
"Let's go see him okay?" She smiled as she got back up onto her feet.
When they entered the building, Skyler glanced down at Mila who seemed to bring her stuffed horse closer to her face as they entered. Looking up, Skyler saw Agent Wolfe glance up from his computer before slowly rising to his feet. Just like Agent Wolfe, everyone seemed to stop what they were doing as they saw Mila.
"Is he gone?" She asked, watching Agent Wolfe as he moved over to them
"Not yet, their just getting him ready for transport." He spoke lightly as his gentle eyes looked down at Mila.
Looking down at Mila, Skyler gave her a soft smile before speaking. "You ready?" Her large blue eyes meet hers before she gave a light nod looking ahead of her.
Moving down the hall, Skyler could feel her hand go tight around her finger as the sound of chains moving was getting louder. Turning the corner, she could only stop when she say Donavan. His head was lowered as two officers were locking full body cuffs to his wrist and ankles. When the officer who was standing beside him looked up and saw both Skyler and Mila, his eyes moved over to Mila who looked at Donavan with tear lined eyes.
"Daddy?" She whispered her voice causing his head to rise.
Donavan looked at Skyler before he looked towards Mila, his eyes raising as he separated his lips. "M-Mila?" He whispered, tears lining his eyes as the officer who was locking the cuff around his ankle moved out of the way.
Skyler looked down at Mile who kept her eyes on Donavan before the stuffed horse landed on the ground as she let go of her finger. And Skyler could only smile as Mila rushed towards him, her small arms wrapping around his neck as he feel to his knees and wrapped his arms around her.
"Mila" His voice was muffled as he pressed his face into her black curly hair.
Lifting his face up from her hair, tears slipped from his eyes as he looked at Skyler who seemed to by crying herself.
"Thank you, thank you so much." He voice quivered as he pulled his daughter closer.
A light hand touched Skyler's shoulder as she watched Mila, a few tears slipping.
"You just became a angel." Agent Wolfe's voice was light as it seemed everyone was watching the emotion event that was happening before them.
But Skyler couldn't brush the fact away how Donavan cried, his arms staying around his daughter as if he didn't want to lose her again. Bring her hand up, she whipped at her nose before looking at Agent Wolfe.
"I wasn't the angel who helped them. I was only the one to help finish the quest of bring them back together." She whispered as she looked back at Donavan.
The pain that was once in his eyes was now filled with joy as Mila sat in his lap, tiny tears falling from her eyes as she held onto his arm.
"I'm going to go." Skyler said but as she turned around, she heard someone call out her name.
"Skyler." Donavan's voice was soft as she turned to face him, seeing him looking at her as tears still fell from his eyes.
"Thank you for finding my daughter." He said, his blue eyes staying with hers as a smile came across her lips before she nodded. Slowly turning to walk away, she heard Donavan speak on last time.
"I don't know if you have already found this but at Mr. Hill's mansion in the basement there's a room filled with all of information about every teen that was ever taken. Ayden wanted you to know that." He said, watching as Skyler looked at him.
"It will help with finding all the teens." He finished, looking down at Mila who looked over at Skyler.
"Thank you." She whispered, watching as he only nodded.
"He wanted you to find them all, to save everyone just like how you saved him."
Skyler could only lift up her chin as she smiled before turning around and walking away. Bring her arm up, she whipped at her eyes as she stumbled outside, feeling spits of rain landing on her.
Looking up towards the sky above, Skyler could only smile as she reached her hand out towards the clouds before falling to the ground in a puddle of water.
"And you were my angel, Chip."

Dear Journal,
This may be the last time I write in you for some time but if my future self ever reads this. Make sure you still remember his name, Ayden Hill. A boy who at first you thought was a monster. As time went by, I was able to see the true side of him. He wasn't any monster, he was just lost. Looking for that right path to bring him back home.
When he died I thought I had failed. He had taken a bullet to the heart to free everyone, free all the teens who were taken and put in a life they were bound to die in. Just like a bird, Ayden's wings held his story. Some of the feathers on his wings were shattered or bleeding but when he jumped and took his final flight, he let the world see that he was no monster. He was just a boy you needed a flicker of light to bring him back to life.
We are all birds, our feathers holding and sharing our life's story with the pain we had to go through. Ayden may of been know as a monster to many but as I looked at his feathers, he wasn't. He was searching for love, love that no one had ever given him.
Keep his name forever in your heart. Because without him, you may not be alive. I may of brought him back, but he showed to me that even people like him can be helped. For they are just a angel trying to spread their wings.
Until I open you again journal, always hold this note. Not just to me, but to others.
~ Skyler Oaks.
