Chapter 21: Those dang trees

I never thought I would put myself in front of a pistol, but I did, and now, I was looking into the eyes of the devil, the gun pointed right on my chest as I looked Deadlock in the eyes, which were darker than normal. Coin and Calum were standing right behind him, and I saw that Calum held his arm out to block Coin from moving towards me.

"Please." I said softly, raising my hand slowly, keeping my eyes on his, which swam in darkness.

His eyes finally broke from mine, moving towards Will, who still had his eyes closed, waiting for the gun to go off. He moved his eyes back towards me, and I placed my hand on the pistol, slowly pushing it off to the side, his eyes following my hand as I did so.

"Coin." He said, his eyes flickering over to me for a split second before they moved to Coin, one of his sleeves rolled up, showing what looked like a snake tattoo that wrapped around his arm.

"Take Ms. Oaks back to her room, and make sure the door is locked." He growled softly, lowering the pistol, relief washing over me.

Coin only nodded and was at my side in a heartbeat, taking my elbow in his large hand and pulling me towards the stairs, Deadlock's eyes following him as he did so before he turned around and put the pistol in Calum's hands, leaving the room. I then noticed Jariah standing by a window, stretches all over him, his left hand holding his right shoulder, and when he saw me watching him, he turned his back towards me, leaving me in Coin's hands as we got up the stairs. We got up the stairs, and Coin opened the door, Noah stood up, watching as Coin pushed me into the room, looking around to make sure nothing was out of place.

"Calum will bring up clothes that you need to change into a few, don't try anything." He barked, looking at me the most before he pulled the door closed, a faint click following behind, leaving me standing by the dresser, Noah looked at the door before he looked over at me.

"Don't ask." I mumbled as I walked over and sat down on the bed, Noah bring his hands up in an I-surrender- way, making me smile.

"I'm sorry you got pulled into this, Noah." I mumbled, looking at him as he moved over to me, sitting down next to me, his legs hanging off the bed.

"I'm just happy, we're not dead." He mumbled, making me look at him.

"Yet." He added, and I softly hit him on the shoulder.

"Don't say that." I said, looking at him and he just looked away.

"Sky, I don't even know these people and I can tell something is going happen that both you and I aren't going to like." He said standing up and walking towards the door, trying the doorknob, but the door staying in place, making Noah let out a frustrated sigh, walking over to the bed and sitting down, looking out the window.

"What do you think dad is doing right now?" He asked, resting his chin in the palm of his hand.

I just shook my head. "Properly yelling at Agent Wolfe telling him to find us." I mumbled, watched as a bird landed my our window, tilting its head at us as it moved around before it pulled out its wings and flew off again, leaving Noah and me to sit in silence.

I sat on the ground as Calum forced my arms behind my back, tying them together as I watch Noah stayed against the wall, his eyes on Coin who made him stay against the wall, watching him right back. Noah moved his eyes over to mine, fear running through his eyes and I wanted to tell him everything was going to be okay, but honestly, I had no idea what to expect.

Calum gave a tug on the ropes, making me wince and he sighed before putting them in a knot, looking towards Noah. "Your turn." He said Noah seemed to shrink away from both Coin and Calum, his eyes looking over at me.

"Boy, just listen and don't put up a fight." Coin warned, pushing off the wall and making his way towards Noah, who backed up until he was trapped in the corner, his eyes wide in fear.

"Please." He said, pressing harder against the wall, Coin reaching out to get him.

"Come on, we're not going to hurt you." Calum said softly, slowly making his way towards Noah, who looked at me and I just shook my head.

And I thought he was going to listen, instead, when Coin reached out to grab him, Noah sent a hard punch to Coin's nose, making him stagger back, Calum quickly took action and slamming Noah against the wall, Noah letting out a cry of pain when Calum pulled his arms behind his back, waiting for Coin to pull himself back together. When he did, he looked like he was going to rip Noah to shredders but Calum stopped him.

"Remember brother, no scratches, I don't want Deadlock to hurt both of us if he doesn't get any money." He said, keeping Noah pressed against the wall, Coin holding his bleeding nose. After making sure Coin wasn't going to kill my brother, Calum tied my brother's hands together, whispering something in his ear before he pulled him from the wall, walking him over to me and forcing him to sit down next to me, Noah wincing.

"Now, you two stay here until we come back to load you in the car." Calum said, pulling out a cloth and shoving it into Noah's mouth, securing it in the back, before he went over to me, pulling out another one and folding it a few times before I felt the soft cloth slip between my teeth with ease, Calum securing it in the back.

After making sure Noah and I weren't going anywhere, Calum followed Coin out before he pulled the door shut behind him. I looked over to see that Noah was shaking, his head lowered as he messed with the gag in his mouth, his back remaining to me. I just looked at the dresser in front of me, seeing bigger when sitting on the ground, it seemed so small standing up, but when you're looking up at it, it looked like a tower. Noah mumbled something that was mixed up thanks to the cloth and I watched as he leaned against the bed, flexing his hand that he had punched against Coin's face, both of us staring off into our own worlds.

Deadlock's POV

Deadlock leaned against his office desk, his face pressed into his hands as he tried to piece things together. He had been so drowned into killing the slave that tried to run, he almost pulled the trigger on the girl, the girl who had looked at him with her eyes so gentle, he didn't understand how she was able to pull him from his other world, it was her eyes that reminded him of his wife, those eyes that begged him to not do it, it was like her, but in a living and younger body. A knock on the door made him jump and he looked up to see Jariah peek in, still holding his shoulder.

"Is it okay if I come in?" He asked and Deadlock just nodded, rubbing his fingers together.

"What do you need?" He asked, pushing off the desk and walking over to book shelf, glancing over at Jariah as he ran his hand through his hair, wincing.

"Does that girl of yours know how to put shoulder's back into place?" He asked, looking at Deadlock as he pulled a book off the shelf, walking over to his desk and setting it down.

"I could ask, why? Did that slave give a good fight back?" He asked, looking up.

Jariah just laughed. "No, it's called trees my friend, those things sometimes like to pop up and love causing you pain." He said and for once, Deadlock smiled, showing his teeth as he chuckled, opening the book, Jariah leaning forward to see what was inside, his eyes going wide.

It was made to look like a normal book, but inside, newspaper articles were cut out and pasted onto every page, pictures, and notes added above it. Deadlock turned to a certain page that made Jariah realize what he was looking at. One large article was pasted onto the page, a small picture of a burning house in black and white, bold words just above it.

Husband finds house burning down with dead wife inside, 20 month old baby gone.

Jariah looked up at Deadlock, seeing a hint of emotion before it was washed away, Deadlock slamming the book shut and placing a hand over his face, before removing it and looking at Jariah. "How's, what's his face doing?" He mumbled, sliding the book under some papers, Jariah looking at the papers before shaking his head and answering his question.

"His name is Will, and he's worse than me. Fell unconscious, then was conscious for maybe 5 minutes before he passed out, and hasn't woken up since." He said, watching as Deadlock rubbed his temple.

He was about to open his mouth to say something when Calum through open the door, Jariah jumping to his feet and turning towards Calum, seeing him looking at Deadlock. His eyes wide, showing whatever was happening, wasn't good.

"What is it?" Deadlock asked, Calum swallowed.

"Rosalia is five minutes out." He said and Deadlock's face went pale.

Quickly, he snatched at papers, shoving them in the drawers, grabbing at his gun and clicking the safety on, looking at Jariah and Calum. Quickly barking orders.

"Calum, you go up and watch the kids, tell Coin to watch Will downstairs, and Jariah, I need you to keep Lorri, make sure she doesn't leave her room without me knowing." He said and both Calum and Jariah nodded.

"Get moving!" He yelled, pushing them out the door and looking out the window, seeing his boss's car come to a stop, his heart taking speed.

This day was just starting to get horrible.
