Chapter 2: Breakdowns
During the months to train for the upcoming expedition, a single girl caught your eye once more. Of course, it was Mikasa. She was sitting on a fallen tree, looking down at her hands. You examined her from afar, trying to see what was wrong with her. But she seemed... the same, yet so different.
Taking a few steps towards her, you heard it- loud and clear. Small cries. "M-Mikasa?" You called out to her. She jumps and perks up to her name being called, and that's when you saw it. Her eyes were streaked with red and tears were falling down her pale cheeks. "I-Is everything okay?"
"Y-Yeah..." She sniffs and wipes her tears. "I'm fine." She began to compose herself, distancing herself from everything.
"Mikasa..."
"I said I'm fine!" She began to growl, staring you down with her stormy eyes. But deep within them, you could tell she was lying.
Mustering up a bit of courage, you sighed and began to speak to her once more. "Mikasa, what's going on?" She was shocked to hear that from you, but she shook her head to deny everything. "Please... don't lie to me. Something's on your mind... what is it?"
She sighs, looking away from you. "I-It's nothing, (y/n). Nothing you should worry about."
"You have been a classmate from the 104th Cadet Corps, and we're still former classmates. We've went through a lot... I could say I am a friend... but if you don't, I'll understand." You began to tell her, hoping Mikasa would open up. "But, unlike your other friends, I don't know you. It won't be embarrassing to tell me what's wrong-"
"(y/n), that's enough." Mikasa says, sighing heavily and looking down. "You're right... you don't know me." She then looks up to you, and her silver eyes were glinting with faded hope. "If you do tell, consider yourself dead."
"Like I would even betray you in the first place."
She sighed heavily, fumbling with her fingers. Nervous... she was nervous talking to you about what's truly happening. You don't blame her. Not a complete stranger walks up and demands the truth about what's wrong. "It's... Eren..."
"What about him?"
Once more, Mikasa sighed heavily. "I can tell... he likes someone else. I'm just... sick and tired of it now. He promised that... that he'll take care of me, and it seems that he lied to me." Instinctively, you reached out for her. You wrapped your arm around her, comforting her. "When I thought I knew him... I don't know him at all."
You nodded, wanting to do anything to comfort her. "No one knows who someone really is at all."
She then wipes her tears, nodding. "That is true..." Mikasa then turned to you, smiling softly and her eyes glinting with more pieces of hope. "Thank you, (y/n)..."
"You're welcome." Mikasa wiped all her tears away and stood up. "If you want my advice... if Eren was hurting you like that... don't stick with him, okay?" All she responded you with was a simple nod and she walked down onto the training field, where everyone else was.
Watching her leave, you sighed softly. Eren was distancing away from Mikasa... and to most people, it would be an opportunity. But to you now... she needed space and it was using Mikasa at the point where she seemed to be... not herself. At this time, you wanted to keep up a friendship with Mikasa first before having a true relationship.
"M-Mikasa..." You faintly say to yourself.
