The question is: Why did Kenny attack Paul? There has to be more reason than "I have a crush", right?

Actually, from what Emerald told me, "I have a crush" is the last reason he attacked Paul.

Kenny attacked Paul not because of Dawn, but because it was a challenge. Several of Ash and Dawn's rivals and friends of Sinnoh (Sorry Gary. You weren't invited) made it a challenge to see who could attack Paul and make it successful. In my opinion, it's incredibly stupid. You have contest specialists and battle pros trying to attack one guy.

But from how Emerald had it laid out, I can see how Kenny did it and why this was so difficult. Paul is extremely experienced in getting jumped (Thanks Team Rocket and others) and knows how to win a battle with ease. So despite all the others that had the chance, Kenny was the only one.

I know what you're thinking. Kenny's like Dawn, barely any battle experience. But Kenny doesn't need it. All Kenny had to do was wait for a big storm and Paul to be more worried about shelter than himself before striking him down. And it was dark enough that Paul wouldn't know what he was up against until after the hit. Plus, Paul and Kenny barely know each other, so Kenny wouldn't need a lot of time to make it seem like a random person hit him.
