CHAPTER 31

The storm hit them with no mercy, roaring waves crashing against the hull of the ship as the skies turned pitch black.

The once serene sea had transformed into a beast, its waters churning violently, tossing the boat like a rag doll.

Qarek, usually composed, was holding onto a rope, his knuckles turning white.

He glanced at Yzavynne and Leeani, both looking equally startled, their eyes scanning the chaotic surroundings.

Jiighual was by their side, shouting something into the wind, though his words were lost in the storm's rage.

"AAAARGH! Gods! Is this how you challenge me!?"

Nert and Andhur was trying to stabilize one of the loose sails, his muscles straining against the pull of the wind.

They both chanted.

"Rain! Rain! Go! Away!"

Kazaks stood near the mast, his broad figure silhouetted against the dark sky, his usually steady stance faltering as the ship lurched.

Ruby clung to the railing, holding onto Aina, shielding the little girl from the wind and rain.

"Hang on, Aina!"

Zach's voice cut through the storm, authoritative and calm despite the panic around him.

"Everyone, get a grip!"

His eyes scanned his group, assessing their positions and what needed to be done.

"Nert and Andhur, secure that sail! Jiighual, take the ropes on the starboard side! Kazaks, help with the rudder—make sure it doesn't break loose! Qarek, Yzavynne, Leeani—get below deck and make sure everything is tied down, we can't afford to lose supplies! Ruby, stay with Aina—"

Before he could finish, a booming voice rang out, clear even amidst the howling storm.

"Villagers! Hold your positions! Tie down anything loose and ready yourselves!"

Haerak was at the bow of the ship, his presence a stark contrast to the chaos around him.

His eyes were sharp, focused, as he issued orders to his sailors, the seasoned EmberWind villagers who had weathered countless storms before.

"You two, to the starboard side—brace the mainmast! The rest of you, get the buckets ready; we need to keep this boat from flooding!"

Zach glanced at Haerak, briefly caught off guard by the older man's control of the situation.

Haerak's calm and strategic demeanor contrasted sharply with the storm's fury.

He turned back to his band, nodding as they fell into place with their tasks.

Zach called, giving a sign of his trust in the experienced sailor.

"Keep the bow facing the waves, Haerak!"

Haerak responded with a sharp nod.

Amidst the flurry of movement, Seraphina emerged from below deck, her hands full of small, colorful vials.

She was soaked from head to toe, but her expression was one of fierce determination, almost excitement.

"Everyone, drink this! It'll ward off the chill and keep your senses sharp!" she shouted, pushing the vials into the hands of the nearest sailors and band members.

"It's my new shamanic brew—cure for the worst of seasickness too!"

A nearby villager hesitated, looking skeptically at the swirling green liquid inside the vial.

Seraphina rolled her eyes, practically shoving it into his hand.

"What's worse, swallowing this or getting swept overboard?"

Without another word, the man gulped it down.

Seraphina didn't stop there; she ran to where Ruby was still holding onto Aina.

"Take this, Ruby! It'll help calm her down."

Ruby nodded, accepting the vial gratefully and helping Aina sip it.

The little girl's shivering slowed, her eyes losing some of their fear as the potion took effect.

Seraphina moved across the deck, distributing her potions with the speed and precision of someone who'd done this a hundred times before.

The band's trust in her grew with every passing second.

She reached Kazaks, who was gripping the rudder tightly, fighting against the storm's strength.

"Here!" she shouted over the wind.

"This one's for muscle fatigue!"

Kazaks snatched the vial without a word, his eyes narrowing as he downed it in one gulp.

He gave her a curt nod, then went back to wrestling with the rudder.

"Zach!" Haerak's voice called again, this time closer.

He was by Zach's side, his face calm but stern.

"The storm will pass—we just need to steer through the worst of it. Keep your men... and women in line, and we'll make it out."

Zach gave a sharp nod, already noticing the difference Seraphina's potions were making.

His band members seemed steadier, more focused.

He could feel the storm's fury beginning to subside, just slightly, enough for him to call out another round of orders.

"Qarek, check the ropes again! Jiighual, I need you, Andhur and Nert to help Kazaks with the rudder. Ruby, keep Aina safe—"

Just then, Seraphina, sprinting across the deck, stopped beside Haerak.

Her usual smile was gone, replaced with a look of concentration.

"Haerak! Use this one! It'll boost your focus—trust me!"

Haerak chuckled, taking the offered vial without hesitation.

"You're a handy one to have around, aren't you?"

"Of course I am!" she grinned, her hyped tone returning briefly.

"Now let's get through this storm before it turns us all into fish food!"

The ship creaked and groaned as it fought against the waves, but the combined efforts of Haerak's experienced sailors and the Renaissance Band's strength and determination began to show.

The villagers, guided by Haerak's steady commands, moved with purpose, bailing out water, securing loose items, and adjusting the sails as needed.

"Hold steady, everyone!" Zach shouted, his voice hoarse but strong.

He could see the storm clouds beginning to thin on the horizon, a faint glimmer of sunlight breaking through.

The worst of it was almost over.

"Just a little longer!" Haerak echoed, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

As the chaos slowly began to settle, Seraphina clapped her hands, her usual energy returning.

"See? Easy peasy, just like brewing a potion!"

Qarek, who had just finished securing the ropes for what felt like the hundredth time, gave her a disbelieving look.

"You call that easy?"

Seraphina winked at him, sticking out her tongue playfully.

"For me, it is!"

The tension on the deck began to ease, laughter breaking out among the crew as they realized they had weathered the worst of the storm.

The Renaissance Band, along with the villagers of EmberWind, had pulled through together, stronger than before.

The ship rocked gently now, the waves slowly calming as the storm passed.

Zach, breathing heavily, met Haerak's eyes.

The two men shared a silent nod of respect, acknowledging each other's strength and leadership.

Seraphina looked around, satisfied with her work.

"See? I told you my potions would help!"

Haerak chuckled.

"You may have just saved this ship, shaman."

Seraphina said.

"Hey, don't call me 'shaman' as if we aren't close!"

The tension finally broke, replaced by relieved smiles and laughter as the group realized they had made it through.

The storm had tested their mettle, but together, they had prevailed.

Jiighual, who had been clutching the ropes, let out a hearty laugh.

"Never thought I'd see the day a shaman and a few sailors would save our skins from a storm like that!"

Nert, brushing the wet hair off his face, grinned widely.

"You can say that again. I almost thought we were done for. Good work, everyone. And hey, Seraphina! Those potions of yours—what on earth were those?"

Kazaks, still catching his breath, nodded in agreement, giving a rare, approving smile.

"Haerak's crew handled the ship like it was an extension of themselves. I've never seen anything like it."

Yzavynne, always quick with her words, added.

"Seraphina, you saved our lives out there. I've got to hand it to you, you're one hell of a shaman."

Seraphina, drenched from the rain but still bubbling with her characteristic energy, gave a wide smile, her cheeks flushed with pride.

"Aw, come on, guys, it was nothing! Just a little bit of this and that—ancient techniques passed down by my master... which is me. You know how it goes!"

Leeani chuckled, patting Seraphina on the back.

"I've never seen anything like it. I owe you one, shaman."

Haerak stood nearby, listening to their praises.

He was wiping the rain off his face, his expression calm and focused as always.

The way he had handled his sailors and navigated through the storm left the Renaissance Band in awe.

It was clear now why Haerak was held in such high regard among his people.

Qarek crossed his arms, giving Haerak a nod of approval.

"You and your men... you were incredible out there. You took charge like the storm was just another day's work."

Haerak chuckled softly, brushing off the compliment with a humble wave of his hand.

"Experience, Qarek. My men and I have weathered storms like this before. It's not our first dance with the waves. We're sailors, after all. When the sea roars, we just roar back louder."

Seraphina butted in, her excitement barely contained.

"And did you see how that potion exploded in the air? A boom here, a splash there—it was like a festival of magic! I swear I could see the storm spirit's face when it got hit. Right, Aina?"

Aina, who had been gripping onto Ruby's arm during the storm, nodded with wide eyes.

She ran up to Seraphina, throwing her arms around her waist.

"Auntie Sera! You did it! You really did it!"

Her voice was a mix of relief and admiration.

Seraphina knelt down, ruffling Aina's hair.

"Of course I did, little one! Did you doubt me?"

She beamed, hugging Aina back tightly.

The crew began to gather around, praising both Seraphina and Haerak.

Their gratitude and relief were palpable; the storm had pushed them to their limits, and yet they had managed to pull through together.

Zach approached, still catching his breath.

"Haerak, Seraphina—thank you. Your quick thinking saved us."

Haerak, ever humble, shook his head.

"No thanks needed, Zach. It's what we do. We sailors protect our own. And you—your leadership kept everyone focused. I could see it in their eyes."

Zach gave a small smile but said nothing, his gaze drifting to Seraphina, who was now making funny faces at Aina, the little girl laughing uncontrollably.

The scene was heartwarming—

The tension of the storm already melting away into the backdrop of the gentle sea.

Gargeal stood a bit apart from the group, watching the interactions with his usual stoic demeanor.

"Hmm."

The sunlight glinted off his armor as he stared at the horizon, deep in thought.

Though he did not join in the praises—

There was a faint—

Almost imperceptible softness in his eyes as he observed the scene.

His mind was elsewhere, lost in contemplation.

Jiighual, wiping the sweat and rain from his brow, approached Gargeal with a raised eyebrow.

"You alright there, Master? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Gargeal shook his head slowly, his voice low and contemplative.

"No ghost. Just... thinking."

He glanced at the others, now gathered in a circle, laughter and cheers filling the air.

"This crew... they're something else. It's not often you see warriors, sailors, and shamans coming together like this."

Jiighual let out a laugh, clapping Gargeal on the back.

"That's the Renaissance Band for you. Always full of surprises."

Aina pulled away from her hug, looking up at Seraphina with a big smile.

"You're the best, Auntie Sera! I knew you could do it."

Seraphina puffed out her chest proudly.

"Well, someone has to be the hero, right? And this time, it was me!"

She winked at Aina, causing another round of giggles.

The scene around them was peaceful now.

The ship swayed gently with the waves, the sky clear and brightening with the sun's return.

The once-chaotic deck was now filled with laughter and the sounds of relief, the Renaissance Band and Haerak's villagers mingling as they celebrated their narrow escape.

Gargeal's gaze lingered on Seraphina and Aina, a faint smile tugging at his lips before it disappeared as quickly as it came.

He turned his eyes back to the horizon, a silent promise in his thoughts.

Seraphina noticed him staring and flashed him a playful grin.

"What's the matter, Gargeal? Cat got your tongue?"

Gargeal rolled his eyes but said nothing, turning his attention back to the sea, content to listen to the chatter around him.

Just then, Aina tugged on Seraphina's sleeve.

"Auntie, will you show me more potions later?"

"Of course, sweetie," Seraphina said, giving Aina a big smile.

"I've got loads of new things to show you! We'll have a blast."

Seraphina, ever the center of attention, was in her element.

She had drawn a small crowd, her boisterous laughter carrying over the sounds of the waves.

Aina was perched on her lap, clapping her hands excitedly as Seraphina animatedly told a story of a mythical creature from her homeland—a tale of a forest spirit that could turn into a great owl and carry lost children back to their homes.

"And then, with a flash of its enormous wings," Seraphina spread her arms wide, almost knocking Andhur to the side, causing everyone to laugh.

"It swooped down like this—whoosh! And carried the boy all the way to the highest tree in the forest! There he stayed, safe from the storms below, until morning came."

Qarek chuckled, leaning against the mast with his arms crossed.

"You're telling tall tales again, shaman? What's next, you'll say you've seen one yourself?"

"Hey, who knows?" Seraphina winked.

"I might've met one! You've got to believe a shaman when she says so!"

Aina gasped in delight, her eyes wide with wonder.

"Really, Auntie Sera? Did you really see it?"

Seraphina gave a dramatic pause, lowering her voice to a whisper.

"Well, sweet Aina... maybe one day I'll show you."

The crowd chuckled.

Even Kazaks, who rarely smiled, seemed amused by her antics, shaking his head with a slight smirk.

He was leaning against the rail, looking as if he was trying hard not to show his amusement.

Jiighual, on the other hand, was laughing openly, his deep voice booming as he slapped Kazaks on the back.

Yzavynne and Leeani were seated nearby, enjoying the show with smiles on their faces.

Yzavynne had a hand over her mouth, giggling softly, while Leeani had her arms around her knees, looking relaxed and at ease.

Ruby, standing beside Andhur, watched as Seraphina mimed the swooping of the owl spirit, her arms flapping wildly.

"She's quite the entertainer," Ruby remarked, a smile on her face.

Andhur grinned widely.

"Who knew a shaman could be so fun! I thought they were all about herbs and potions, but she's got a spark in her, that one."

"More like a wildfire," Ruby agreed, laughing.

Seraphina, noticing the attention she was getting, decided to step it up.

"Alright, alright, how about a little demonstration?" she called out, pulling a small vial from her pouch.

The liquid inside glowed faintly.

"This, my dear friends, is a special brew. It's said to make even the most stoic warriors laugh like children."

Andhur's eyes lit up with excitement.

"Oh, I've got to try this!"

Qarek rolled his eyes but couldn't help the smile tugging at his lips.

"You're going to be her guinea pig, Andhur?"

Andhur shrugged, undeterred.

"Why not? Life's about experiences, isn't it?"

Seraphina uncorked the vial with a flourish, holding it up to the setting sun as if it were a fine wine.

She handed it to Andhur, who took it without hesitation.

He sniffed it, wrinkling his nose at the strong smell, but then downed it in one go.

Everyone held their breath for a moment. Andhur's face was a picture of concentration.

Then, suddenly, he burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter, clutching his sides and stumbling back.

The entire deck erupted in laughter, Ruby doubling over, tears streaming down her face.

Kazaks shook his head, his deep chuckle joining the others.

"That's quite a potion you've got there, Seraphina."

Seraphina grinned proudly.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I aim to please."

As the laughter continued, Gargeal quietly made his way through the crowd.

He was a shadow among the lively group, moving with a calm, steady pace.

He approached Zach, who stood near the ship's edge, watching the scene unfold with a contemplative look on his face.

Gargeal positioned himself beside Zach, leaning on the rail as he gazed out at the horizon.

The sun was just touching the water, casting a golden path across the sea.

He stood there for a moment, silent, taking in the view before he finally spoke, his voice low and almost introspective.

"It's funny, isn't it?" Gargeal muttered, not taking his eyes off the sunset.

Zach turned his head slightly, glancing at Gargeal.

"What is?"

Gargeal let out a quiet, almost imperceptible sigh.

"How easily people can find joy even after facing death. How they can laugh together like this... as if the storm we just went through was nothing but a bad dream."

Zach nodded slowly, his gaze returning to the vibrant scene on the deck.

"Yeah, it's... comforting, in a way. To know that no matter what we face, we can still come together like this. Find moments of peace."

Gargeal's expression softened, his usual stoic demeanor giving way to a rare, almost gentle look.

"Moments like these... they remind us why we keep fighting. Not for glory, not for revenge... but for this. For the chance to see another sunset, to laugh like children, even if just for a moment."

Zach looked at him, surprised by the depth of his words.

He gave a small smile, one filled with understanding.

"Well said, Gargeal."

Gargeal simply nodded, his eyes fixed on the horizon.

"Hmm."

The two men stood there, side by side, in a rare moment of quiet companionship, the laughter of their friends and the gentle sounds of the sea creating a soothing symphony around them.

Meanwhile, back on the deck, Aina had thrown herself into Seraphina's arms, hugging her tightly.

"Auntie Sera, you're the best!" she exclaimed, her face alight with joy.

Seraphina laughed, lifting Aina off her feet and spinning her around.

"Only for you, my little sunshine," she said, her voice filled with affection.

Haerak watched them from a few steps away, his eyes soft as he looked at his daughter and sister.

He seemed content, a rare smile playing on his lips.

Seraphina, still basking in the laughter and praise from everyone around, caught sight of Jiighual leaning against the mast, looking slightly pale and congested.

He rubbed his nose and sniffled, clearly fighting off the tail end of a cold he'd been dealing with after the storm.

She grinned mischievously, reaching into her satchel with a twinkle in her eye.

Without warning, she pulled out a small, dark green bottle filled with a strange liquid and called out.

"Hey, Jiighual!"

Jiighual looked up just in time to see the bottle flying towards him.

His reflexes, honed from years of combat, kicked in, and he caught it mid-air with ease.

The sudden movement caused a few nearby villagers to flinch, but Jiighual just held the bottle up, eyeing it suspiciously.

He asked, his voice thick with congestion.

"What's this?"

Seraphina placed her hands on her hips, looking very pleased with herself.

"That's for your cold! Trust me, it'll work wonders!"

Jiighual sniffed the top of the bottle and immediately pulled back, wrinkling his nose.

The smell was... intense, to put it mildly.

It reminded him of overripe herbs mixed with something sharp and pungent.

He asked again.

"What's in this, exactly?"

"Oh, just a bit of this and that. You know, the usual shamanic blend—garlic, ginger, some wild herbs, a pinch of powdered frog toe..."

She trailed off, waving her hand as if the ingredients were no big deal.

Jiighual raised an eyebrow, still holding the bottle away from his nose.

"Powdered frog toe? Are you trying to cure me or turn me into a frog?"

Before Seraphina could respond, Jiighual felt a tickle in his nose.

His expression shifted from amused skepticism to sudden urgency.

"Ah... ah... ACHOO!"

He sneezed forcefully, almost doubling over.

The sneeze seemed to echo across the deck, causing everyone nearby to look up.

Andhur, who had been sipping his own potion, burst out laughing.

He called out, earning a few chuckles from the others.

"Well, looks like you could use that after all, Jiighual!"

Jiighual, wiping his nose with the back of his hand, gave Seraphina a mock glare.

"Did you time that on purpose?"

Seraphina raised her hands innocently, but the mischievous smile on her face said it all.

"I'd never do such a thing! But... well, the universe works in mysterious ways, doesn't it?"

Kazaks, who had been watching from the side, smirked.

"Go on, Jiighual. Drink it. Let's see if our shaman's concoction can take down your stubborn cold."

Jiighual sighed, shaking his head, but there was a smile tugging at his lips.

He uncorked the bottle and hesitated for just a second.

The scent hit him full force—herbs, something sweet, and definitely something sour.

With a resigned look, he took a swig.

Everyone watched in anticipation as Jiighual swallowed, his face a mix of surprise and slight discomfort.

He smacked his lips, his eyebrows furrowing.

"Huh. It's... not as bad as I thought. Tastes a bit like—"

"ACHOO!"

He sneezed again, this time even louder, causing Aina to giggle from Seraphina's lap.

The deck erupted in laughter.

Ruby clutched her stomach, leaning against the railing for support.

Even Gargeal, who rarely showed emotion, had a faint smile playing on his lips.

Jiighual, still holding the bottle, chuckled as he wiped his nose again.

He muttered good-naturedly.

"Well, if this doesn't cure me, at least it's entertaining everyone else."

Seraphina gave him a playful salute.

"It's all part of the service, Jiighual! Entertainment and healing, two for the price of one!"

Jiighual took another sip, shaking his head with a smile.

"You're one of a kind, Seraphina. Remind me never to doubt your shamanic skills again."

"Good call!" Seraphina said, winking.

"Now, let's see how quickly you bounce back. If my potion doesn't work, I've got at least five more in my satchel ready to go!"

Jiighual groaned jokingly.

"Please, no more... I'd rather deal with the cold than drink another one of those."

The group shared a laugh—

The camaraderie palpable as the ship sailed on—

The storm clouds now a distant memory.
