CHAPTER 27
Each of the Renaissance Band members found themselves drawn to silence, winding down from a long, emotionally charged evening.
The weight of what lay ahead settled over them like a comforting blanket—
An excitement tinged with uncertaint—
Yet steadied by the presence of one another.
One by one, each of them retired to their tents with murmurs of "good night" exchanged in gentle, almost sleepy tones.
Andhur, with his usual boisterous flair, was one of the first to leave, clapping a hand on Qarek's shoulder as he staggered to his feet.
"Let's see if I don't snore everyone awake!" Andhur joked, though it was met with a few smirks and groggy eye-rolls, softened by affection.
Qarek shook his head with a little smile, muttering,
"Good luck, Andhur. You might just have to sleep on the other side of the shore."
One by one, they left the circle—each giving a final glance at the fire and to the friends they'd grown closer to, acknowledging without words the journey they were about to share.
Leeani, Yzavynne, and Kazaks lingered a bit longer, caught in soft conversation before they too sought the warmth and shelter of their tents, each holding their own hopes and worries close to their chest.
Zach, seated on a log near the fire with Ruby beside him, squeezed her hand one last time.
They exchanged a silent promise in their gaze—
One they didn't need to say aloud.
He was the last to rise, helping Ruby to her feet and, with one last look at the dim glow of the fire and the scattered tents, they both retreated to rest.
Zach caught sight of Nert and Jiighual seated by the fire, the two who had chosen to stay awake a bit longer.
He gave Ruby's hand a final squeeze before releasing it and crossing over to them, a trace of concern in his eyes.
"How are you both holding up?" Zach asked, his voice quiet but warm.
"I know the poison's effects were pretty rough during the battle."
Nert glanced up, a hint of surprise flickering across his tired face, followed by a faint smile.
"It's... subsiding, somehow. Not gone, but it feels more manageable than it did earlier."
Jiighual nodded in agreement, shifting slightly on the log to meet Zach's gaze.
"It's like the worst of it has passed. A dull ache now, nothing like when we were fighting."
Zach let out a small sigh of relief, giving them each a grateful nod.
"I'm glad to hear that. I'll keep watch tomorrow morning, so get some rest if you need it."
Nert replied, a hint of his usual humor flickering in his eyes despite his exhaustion.
"Appreciate it, Captain."
Jiighual offered a small, grateful nod before Zach took his leave, letting the two of them fall back into their quiet watch.
△▼△▼△▼△
The camp settled into a deep, tranquil silence, the only sounds now the occasional murmur of waves along the shoreline and the faint crackle of embers.
Above them, the stars shone bright and unwavering, casting the night in a gentle, silvery glow.
But while the others rested, Nert stayed awake, seated near the fire with his arms resting on his knees, keeping a careful watch over the camp.
He'd volunteered himself as the final watch, though no one had truly asked it of him.
There was a strange comfort in sitting there—
Knowing he was the one ensuring they could rest easy tonight.
He watched the tents as if each was a fragile promise of the future, something he was determined to protect.
It was a quiet, almost solemn vigil, yet it filled him with an odd peace.
The weight of responsibility he'd carried for so long now felt less burdensome.
Surrounded by people who—
In their own way—
Had become family.
As he gazed into the last of the embers, deep in thought, he didn't notice at first when Jiighual approached him.
He had been resting, but the subtle stir of something kept him awake, nudging him to seek out the one presence that hadn't yet retired.
Jiighual's voice was soft, nearly a whisper.
"Can't sleep?"
He took a seat beside him on the log, careful not to disturb the tranquility Nert had created.
His usual guarded expression softened in the dim light, his eyes reflecting a quiet understanding.
Nert gave a small chuckle, shrugging.
"Nah, someone's gotta keep an eye out. These ones"
He nodded towards the tents, grinning faintly.
"They've earned a good sleep."
Jiighual's lips curved into a gentle smile, his gaze following his towards the tents.
"It's... strange, isn't it?" he murmured.
"The idea that, after all we've been through, we're here—finally resting, just talking about a village like it's the answer to everything."
Nert hummed thoughtfully, considering her words.
"Yeah, strange... but good," he said.
"For once, there's... I don't know—hope? Even if it's a little blurry around the edges."
They fell into a companionable silence, content with the comfort of each other's presence.
Nert broke it after a moment, glancing over at him.
"Do you ever think about it? Just... stopping, finding somewhere quiet to stay?" he asked, his voice softer, more thoughtful.
"Like... somewhere no one would even know our names?"
Jiighual's eyes flickered, betraying a vulnerability that he usually kept well hidden.
He wrapped his arms around himself, as if hugging his thoughts close.
"I've thought about it," he admitted.
"Sometimes... it's tempting. But I think I've always been afraid of what would come after. I don't know if I'd know who I am without the fight."
A small breeze stirred through the camp, cool and refreshing. Nert leaned back slightly, glancing up at the stars.
"Yeah... I get that," he murmured.
"It's like the fight becomes part of you. Even when you don't want it anymore, it sticks."
Jiighual nodded, looking back to the fire.
"But maybe... that's why this place, this village we're going to—maybe that's the place we can figure it out. Just let it be a start, you know? No guarantees, no promises to be heroes or villains. Just a place to rest, even if it's only for a while."
The gentle sincerity in her voice touched something in Nert.
He hadn't expected such a candid answer from him—
And it made him feel strangely seen—
Understood in a way he didn't often allow himself to be.
After a few moments, he smiled softly.
"Funny, isn't it? Here we are, talking about hope like we're kids dreaming of some paradise."
Jiighual chuckled softly, nudging him.
"Well, maybe we're allowed to dream a little."
He tilted his head, glancing over at him with a smirk.
"Not sure I'd peg you as the sentimental type, Nert."
"Guess I'm full of surprises," he replied with a playful shrug.
"But hey... you didn't have to stay up here with me, you know. It's okay to rest."
Jiighual's gaze softened.
"I know. I just... wanted to make sure you're okay too. Sometimes the ones who watch over everyone forget to take care of themselves."
Nert let out a small laugh, a hint of gratitude in his voice.
"Guess I'm in good company, then," he said.
"Thanks, Jiighual."
They fell into silence again.
Simply sitting together in the peaceful calm of the night—
Their quiet breaths mingling with the soft rhythm of the waves.
△▼△▼△▼△
The dawn light stretched softly over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of pale gold and gentle pink.
As the first glimmer of the sun touched the campsite, Qarek stirred, gradually waking to the quiet serenity around him.
He sat up slowly, his gaze catching on two figures standing near the shore—Zach and Gargeal, their silhouettes outlined against the rising sun.
They stood side by side, deep in conversation, their focus set on the horizon but their words carrying faintly through the calm morning air.
Quietly, Qarek rose and wandered closer, careful not to disturb the stillness as he approached.
As he drew near, Zach's voice became clearer, his tone low and thoughtful.
"If we're bringing them to EmberWind, we need to plan ahead. If anything happens, whether it's an attack from the kingdoms or bandits, we can't afford to be caught off guard."
Zach murmured, his eyes fixed on the glimmering sea.
"We need to be able to protect them without dragging them into something they didn't ask for."
Gargeal nodded, arms crossed as he considered the idea.
"A fallback plan, then. Something that gives the villagers an escape route, or at least a way to hold their ground until help arrives," he said, voice as steady as the dawn itself.
"I could start setting up defensive boundaries once we arrive. But it'll take time to get the layout of the place... I don't even know how big the village is."
Zach nodded, his mind working through the details.
"It's likely small, and from Haerak's description, it sounds secluded enough. But that might work to our advantage—we can use the terrain to reinforce the natural barriers."
Gargeal frowned slightly, thoughtful.
"The tricky part will be in finding ways to protect the villagers without making them feel like they're living in a fortress. Not everyone is ready for that kind of life, especially in a place they call home."
Qarek stepped forward, his quiet approach catching their attention.
They both turned, the gentle surprise on their faces quickly giving way to friendly smiles as they welcomed him into their circle.
"Morning," Qarek greeted, his voice a low murmur as he joined them, the cool morning air making the scene feel even more serene.
"Didn't mean to interrupt. Sounded like a serious conversation, though."
"Good morning, Qarek," Zach replied with a nod, his tone warm and welcoming.
"We're just considering precautions for EmberWind. If we're bringing people like us in there, we need to make sure it stays safe... they're safe. A backup plan never hurts."
Qarek's brow furrowed slightly, and he glanced between them, intrigued.
"Makes sense. But wouldn't defenses make it a target in itself? Villages like EmberWind are usually safe because they stay unnoticed. You start building up walls and barriers... it catches people's attention."
Gargeal's gaze shifted thoughtfully to the horizon.
"True. We have to strike a balance. No obvious fortifications, nothing that screams, 'we're hiding something.'"
"Exactly," Zach replied, nodding in agreement.
"Maybe something more covert. Concealed outposts just outside the village perimeter. A lookout point. Things that don't draw too much attention."
Qarek's eyes brightened, his mind churning with ideas.
"I could help set up a few lookout posts. My skills would come in handy to camouflage them. Nobody would see them unless they knew exactly where to look."
"That would be a huge advantage," Gargeal acknowledged.
"We'll have to coordinate it all quietly, though. We can't risk word of it spreading."
Haerak and Aina emerged from the tent, their faces bright with the early light.
Haerak's amused chuckle broke through the serious tone, instantly adding a playful ease to the quiet discussion.
"You three look as if you're planning for a siege," Haerak teased, shaking his head with a grin.
"Who would've thought I'd find some of the toughest warriors I've ever seen brooding over how to 'protect' my people."
Zach's expression didn't waver as he nodded to Haerak, his eyes clear and resolute.
"It's important, Haerak. If something happens, we need to be prepared. Your village is... well, it's not exactly prepared to fend off a full assault if one came to it."
Haerak laughed again, shaking his head.
"You think too little of us, Zach. Don't underestimate my people. They may not be battle-hardened warriors like you lot, but they're strong, clever, and cunning. Just like you."
He nudged Zach with a playful jab.
"Maybe they haven't seen a battlefield, but they know a thing or two about staying alive."
Zach glanced at Gargeal and Qarek, both of whom looked slightly reassured but still focused on the problem at hand. Zach's brows furrowed as he considered Haerak's words. "Even so, there's a difference between surviving and being able to defend yourself against a trained force. Bandits, sure, but kingdoms... that's another story."
Aina took a step forward, her youthful face bright with a determined smile.
"You're right. We're not warriors like you, but we're not helpless either."
She crossed her arms with a little huff.
"The village elders are pretty good with defenses, you know, especially my Auntie. They keep things running smoothly, and everyone has a role."
Qarek chuckled, running a hand over his hair.
"Well, if anything, I'm glad we're being overly cautious. Better that than having an unpleasant surprise later on."
Haerak nodded, approving.
"That's the spirit. But don't go thinking we're all fragile flowers. Our people are resourceful, and they know these lands like the back of their hands."
Gargeal's usual stony expression softened a little as he took in Haerak's confidence.
"I see your point. Local knowledge counts for a lot, especially if things go south. But still, having some extra defenses won't hurt. We'd just want to do it in a way that complements what you already have—subtle, and well-integrated."
Zach nodded along, mulling it over, his gaze shifting toward the horizon as the sun rose higher.
"We're not looking to turn EmberWind into a fortress. We just want to help where we can. Some hidden lookout points, maybe a few escape routes—things that could come in handy without disrupting your way of life."
Haerak let out a thoughtful sigh, scratching his beard as he pondered Zach's words.
"Well, you're not wrong about the kingdom's attention if you're not careful. But you know, you keep talking as if our village is the only one that would suffer. What about you? Would you and your friends— family really be able to stay hidden in a small place like EmberWind without drawing suspicion?"
Zach paused, considering this, but before he could respond, Aina piped up, her eyes shining with excitement.
"Maybe it won't be as hard as you think, Papa. People come and go through EmberWind now and then. If Andhur's team sticks together and keeps a low profile, it might work out. We've managed to keep the village hidden all this time."
Qarek chuckled, nodding approvingly at Aina.
"Sounds like you're already better at this than you're letting on."
Haerak shrugged, his grin widening.
"Maybe. But I still think it's funny, the way you all fuss. These 'kingdoms' you're worried about? Most of them don't even know we exist, and the few that do wouldn't dare waste resources coming to this backwater."
He winked at Aina, who gave him a nod of agreement.
Gargeal shook his head, though he seemed amused.
"With all due respect, we're not underestimating you or your people, Haerak. We're just making sure we don't lead any trouble your way."
Haerak chuckled.
"All right, all right. I see you've thought this through. I respect that. But trust us a little, too. We're not as defenseless as you might think."
He patted Zach on the shoulder, as if reassuring him.
"You'd be surprised how long we've managed to stay under the radar."
In that moment, the air seemed lighter—
A small warmth of reassurance shared between warriors—
And villagers alike.
△▼△▼△▼△
Slowly, one by one, they emerged from their makeshift tents and blankets, each person stretching and shaking off sleep in their own way.
Yzavynne, Leeani, and Ruby were among the first to gather themselves, exchanging tired but fond glances as they ambled over to the others.
Jiighual and Nert, seated on a fallen log near the campfire, had clearly spent the night keeping watch.
Though the two seemed utterly worn out, a quiet pride radiated from them.
Nert had fallen asleep with his chin resting on his hand, only to be woken by a stiff neck, while Jiighual slumped beside him, his eyelids heavy as he fought to stay awake.
Yzavynne smirked when she spotted the pair, nudging Ruby playfully.
"Look at them—heroes of the night. Bet they were too stubborn to take turns and just sat there the whole time."
Ruby laughed softly, a touch of admiration in her eyes as she watched them.
"Seems like it. They're both so dedicated. But they look dead on their feet."
Leeani chuckled, running a hand through her disheveled hair.
"They'd probably sit there all night just to make sure we got a good rest, even if it means they're half-asleep now."
As Yzavynne, Leeani, and Ruby drew closer, Jiighual stirred, blinking in the sunlight as he noticed them approaching.
He nudged Nert, who groaned and opened one eye, blinking at his friends before rubbing his neck.
"Well, well," Nert drawled with a tired grin.
"Good morning, ladies. Nice of you all to finally join us. Enjoyed your beauty sleep?"
Leeani rolled her eyes playfully.
"And here we thought you'd enjoy watching over us for once, Nert. Didn't think you'd complain about a little stiff neck."
Jiighual chuckled, straightening up and rubbing his own neck.
"It's alright. Even warriors need rest. Though I might need an extra few minutes to shake this off."
As they shared a few warm laughs, Kazaks and Andhur approached from the opposite side of the camp, their own morning routine already off to a chaotic start.
Kazaks stretched, rolling his shoulders, while Andhur yawned dramatically, looking at Kazaks with a mischievous grin.
"Good morning, big guy," Andhur teased, raising an eyebrow.
"Did you get enough sleep, or did those hammer dreams keep you up again?"
Kazaks snorted, rolling his eyes.
"I'd rather dream of my hammer than listen to your snoring all night. I swear, it's like you're trying to scare off everything within a ten-mile radius."
Andhur feigned offense, placing a hand over his chest.
"Me? Snore? Lies! Lies and slander, I say. You're just jealous I can actually sleep peacefully."
Kazaks shot back, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"Oh, yeah, peacefully... if you call 'peaceful' the noise of a dying boar."
The others couldn't help but laugh, Ruby covering her mouth as she chuckled.
Even Gargeal, still standing near Zach, had an amused glint in his eyes as he watched Kazaks and Andhur bicker.
Andhur noticed the audience they'd gathered and turned to them with an exaggerated pout.
"Can you believe this guy? No appreciation for the delicate balance of my nightly breathing."
Yzavynne grinned, folding her arms as she looked between the two.
"Delicate? We were about to check if someone had brought a chainsaw to camp."
Kazaks shook his head, a deep chuckle escaping him.
"See? Even they agree. Delicate, my foot."
Despite his grumbling, there was a clear camaraderie between Kazaks and Andhur—
A shared bond forged through countless battles and bickering matches alike.
The gentle ribbing carried an undertone of genuine care and familiarity, a back-and-forth that added a warm humor to the camp's morning routine.
Andhur continued, nudging Kazaks in the ribs.
"Hey, I bet we'd all sleep soundly if you didn't carry around that brick of a hammer everywhere."
Kazaks rolled his eyes.
"Oh, sure. Because you could definitely handle being weaponless if we were ambushed in the middle of the night. You'd probably trip over your own boots trying to find something to defend yourself with."
Ruby and Leeani snickered as Andhur opened his mouth to retort but then shrugged.
"Alright, fair. You've got a point. But we both know you just use that thing as an excuse to walk around like you're on guard duty all the time."
Kazaks laughed, nodding as if in agreement.
"Maybe. But someone's got to be on guard, don't they?"
Zach, watching the scene with a soft smile, couldn't help but feel the sense of unity and ease that had developed among the group.
The Renaissance Band—
With all their quirks and personalities—
Felt more like family now than ever.
The usual tension and wariness seemed to dissolve in this rare moment of pece, replaced with laughter and an unspoken trust that held them together.
Jiighual, more awake now, turned to Nert and nudged him.
"I think Kazaks and Andhur should have their own watch shift if they're going to keep at it like this. Their banter could keep the entire forest alert."
Nert smirked, watching Kazaks and Andhur with a glint in his eye.
"True. We'd never have to worry about silence again with those two around."
Kazaks overheard this and crossed his arms with a mock-serious expression.
"Hey, we're just making sure everyone stays entertained. Don't act like you don't enjoy the show."
Andhur chuckled, holding up his hands.
"That's right. It's all for you guys. Pure, selfless entertainment."
Ruby rolled her eyes playfully.
"Well, don't entertain yourselves into another argument. We need you both in one piece for the road ahead."
△▼△▼△▼△
However briefly—
Nert had taken his usual position at the edge of the group, his senses tuned to the forest sounds around them, eyes half-closed as he listened to the faint whispers of the world beyond their clearing.
It was then that Nert's ears picked up on something unusual—
A low, rhythmic pulse, too soft for most to notice but unmistakable to him.
His brow furrowed as he tilted his head, as if trying to hear more clearly.
Jiighual, still sitting nearby, noticed his shift in attention and raised an eyebrow.
"Something bothering you, Nert?"
He shushed him gently, a hint of intensity creeping into his otherwise laid-back expression.
"Just... listen. There's something out there."
The others glanced over, some with idle curiosity, others with a touch of alarm.
Kazaks' brow creased, and he instinctively reached for his weapon, though he didn't pull it close just yet.
He trusted Nert's instincts, though they weren't usually triggered without good reason.
Ruby, sensing a change in the mood, looked around with a slightly tense expression.
"What is it, Nert?"
He held up a hand, signaling for silence as he strained his ears, focusing on the distant sound.
The thud, steady and unmistakable, was now growing louder, accompanied by faint creaks and a low hum that stirred the morning air.
Then, as if something clicked in his mind, his eyes widened slightly.
"Ships," he muttered, more to himself at first, before turning to address the group.
"There are ships coming. From the direction of the shore."
The group exchanged glances, a mixture of excitement and tension settling over them.
Their journey to EmberWind Village had always felt abstract, something planned but far away.
Yet, here they were—
Their path potentially intersecting with that very destination in mere minutes.
Haerak, who had been sharing a quiet word with Aina, looked up sharply, a strange, almost anticipatory gleam in his eyes.
He rose, brushing the dirt from his clothes, and strode over to the edge of the clearing, staring in the direction of the sound Nert had detected.
A grin spread across Haerak's face, a confident and slightly knowing expression.
He chuckled softly, as if to himself, before glancing back at the rest of the group.
"I told you they'd come," he said, his voice filled with an easy confidence.
"My people don't leave anyone behind. They're smarter than that."
Zach and Gargeal exchanged a quick look, the careful, logical part of Zach's mind already mapping out potential next steps.
He felt his pulse quicken at the realization that this would mean a step closer to EmberWind—a step closer to safety for the group, to somewhere they might, for once, rest without fearing for their lives.
And yet, he couldn't help but feel a pang of uncertainty.
For all he knew, they might be leading danger right to the village's doorstep.
Jiighual's hand came down on Nert's shoulder, giving him a reassuring squeeze.
"Looks like we're about to meet some new faces," he murmured, his voice calm but filled with a hint of excitement.
Andhur, ever the enthusiastic one, was already bouncing on the balls of his feet, barely able to contain himself.
"Finally! I was starting to think we'd spend another day loafing around. Adventure's waiting, and I'm ready!"
Yzavynne rolled her eyes, though a faint smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.
"You might want to keep that energy in check, Andhur. We're going to a village, not a battlefield."
Kazaks smirked, folding his arms across his chest as he looked at Andhur.
"Knowing you, you'll turn it into one."
Andhur grinned shamelessly, not denying the playful accusation.
"Hey, I'm just here to keep things lively."
The light banter was interrupted as Haerak's expression turned serious.
He took a deep breath, gathering everyone's attention with a single glance.
"They're here."
Aina stepped forward, her gaze steady and determined as she took in the sight of her father's resolve.
She looked over at the Renaissance Band.
"They're here to bring us home."
This was the start of something new—
A journey to EmberWind Village and, perhaps—
The possibility of a future they hadn't yet dared to imagine.
