CHAPTER 26

The glow of the campfire flickered against the dark night sky, casting warm hues across the faces of the Renaissance Band members.

The mood was light, laughter mingling with the crackling of the fire as they shared stories of their past.

Yzavynne leaned back against a log, her eyes reflecting the firelight as she recounted a tale of his earlier days.

"You know," she began with a smirk.

"The first time I tried to catch a fish, I thought I could do it with my bare hands. Let's just say, I ended up slipping into the water and creating a splash loud enough to scare off every fish within a mile!"

The group erupted into laughter, the tension of their recent battles dissipating for a moment.

Leeani chimed in.

"And that's how you learned the art of fishing with a fishing rod instead, right? Maybe we should take you along to EmberWind Village to teach the locals your unique technique!"

Kazaks, who had been busy polishing his war hammer, looked up, a rare smile breaking through his usual stoic demeanor.

He chuckled.

"If they want fish, they can't be too picky about how they're caught."

"Or about who catches them," Jiighual added with a mischievous grin.

"You might end up with a war hammer as your fishing rod, Kazaks!"

"Hey, I'd like to see you try!" Kazaks shot back, his competitive spirit ignited.

"I'll bet you I can catch more fish than you with this!"

Nert shook his head, a playful glint in his eyes.

"You'll scare them all away with that hammer of yours! The fish will see it coming and swim for the hills."

Qarek joined in, his laughter low and rumbling.

"I'm with Nert. You'd be better off trying to fish with your bare hands, Kazaks. You'd still scare them off, but at least you'd look less... excessive."

Kazaks shot Qarek a mock glare.

"Oh, you think you could do better?"

"Easy. All it takes is patience," Qarek replied.

"The art of fishing is about finesse, not brute strength."

As laughter bubbled among the group, Aina, who had been quietly listening with wide eyes, suddenly brightened.

"Then let's go to my home, my father's and my mother's home. The EmberWind Village!!" Her voice rang with excitement, and the energy in the air shifted slightly.

Andhur, sitting nearby, jumped to his feet.

"Let's goooo!!"

He shouted, pumping his fist in the air like a child.

The enthusiasm in his voice was infectious, and for a moment, it seemed as though they might just leap into action right then and there.

But just as quickly, the mood changed.

The group fell into a contemplative silence, the weight of their recent struggles settling over them like a blanket.

"Guys?" Yzavynne finally broke the silence.

"Are we seriously thinking about this? What if Captain decides against it? You know, he might think that getting involved with the village is too dangerous. We might bring trouble with us."

Leeani nodded, her expression thoughtful.

"He's right. We've made enough enemies as it is. Do we really want to risk bringing that to a place that could be a sanctuary for us?"

Kazaks crossed his arms, his brow furrowing.

"It would be a shame to put a peaceful place in danger. The kingdoms won't stop until they hunt us down."

Aina's face fell slightly as she heard their doubts, but she quickly rallied.

"EmberWind is strong. They know how to protect themselves! They're not helpless, you know."

Qarek glanced over at her, nodding in understanding but still looking concerned.

"Maybe, Aina, but we'd be putting your home directly in harm's way. Not to mention, there are many among us who carry... well, let's just say, complicated pasts."

Just then, Haerak strolled into the clearing, a chuckle escaping his lips as he overheard their conversation.

"You Renaissance folk sure know how to worry!" he said, shaking his head in amusement.

"I have already talked to your captain about it. But don't fret too much. If you talk to your captain, I'm sure he'll see the benefits of taking you to EmberWind."

Gargeal stood a little apart from the group, arms crossed, a neutral expression on his face as he observed the banter.

"He does have a point. Not to mention, the village could provide a much-needed rest for all of you."

He interjected, his voice steady.

"You all need a break from this constant running. You all need time to rest. You've fought well, but you can't keep going without time to heal. Everyone has limits. Even those who think they don't."

Yzavynne nodded in agreement, then glanced back at Haerak.

"But what if Captain doesn't agree? He's always worried about keeping us safe... and keeping innocent people out of our mess."

"Maybe he'll decide it's worth the risk. You never know," Haerak said, glancing at the thoughtful faces around him.

"But remember, it's not just your burdens to carry. A village, especially one like EmberWind, has its own strengths, its own resilience."

Jiighual, arms crossed, grumbled.

"That's a nice thought, but villages can be torn apart, just like people. How many of us have lost homes because of the kingdoms? EmberWind would just be another target."

Leeani, leaning back against a log, shook her head.

"They might surprise us, Jiighual. Sometimes, places like that are tougher than they look."

Nert snorted.

"And sometimes they're exactly as fragile as they look."

Just then, Aina broke in, her voice full of earnest conviction.

"EmberWind Village isn't fragile! It's filled with brave, kind people who work together and protect each other. They'd help us, I know they would."

Qarek's face softened, and he nodded.

"We could all use some kindness after everything we've been through. It might be worth the risk."

Andhur, as always, was the first to jump on board.

"See? Aina gets it! We're a strong team; they're a strong village. Together, it could work!"

"Yeah, an army of fishers and farmers," Nert commented, rolling his eyes but cracking a small smile.

"They'd strike fear into the hearts of our enemies."

"Don't knock it till you see it," Andhur countered, hands on his hips.

"Imagine a line of fishers with nets, ready to take on anything. 'For EmberWind!'" he declared dramatically, puffing out his chest and mimicking a battle stance.

Laughter spread through the group, easing the tension.

Even Kazaks, who'd remained mostly serious, chuckled at the mental image.

"Just imagine it," Andhur continued with a grin.

"Fish warriors, led by the mighty Kazaks and his war hammer. The fish wouldn't stand a chance."

Kazaks shook his head, smiling.

"I'd be proud to be part of such an army."

"Of course you would," Qarek teased.

"The mighty warrior of fish."

"And come on! We're being too cautious. EmberWind could be just what we need! Plus, imagine the welcome feast they'd throw for us!"

Nert rolled his eyes with a smirk.

"Ah, yes, because the real priority here is a feast. Not our lives or the lives of the villagers."

Kazaks said, shaking his head, though a grin betrayed him.

"Okay, okay! That's it! I'm not going to be part of an army of fishermen!"

Jiighual countered, his eyes dancing with mirth.

"Why not? I'd be proud to call myself a fish warrior!"

Jiighual countered, his eyes dancing with mirth.

Nert mused, snickering.

"Fish warriors? That sounds like a terrible band name."

Leeani quipped back, throwing her hands up dramatically.

"Or a recipe for disaster!" Leeani quipped back, throwing her hands up dramatically.

"Hey, hey!" Andhur defended, hands raised in surrender.

"I'm just saying, a nice meal wouldn't hurt anyone."

"Ah, but that's the beauty of being a captain," Haerak said, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

"It's also his job to worry about the safety of his crew, and that includes you lot!"

"And what about the last time we were ambushed?" Jiighual added, crossing his arms.

"We can't just go dragging our enemies along with us."

Aina looked between her father and the band members, sensing the apprehension in the air.

"But EmberWind Village is special! It's a safe place, and my friends there would help us! They're strong and clever; they could defend themselves."

As the laughter subsided, Aina spoke up again, her tone earnest.

"I just want us to be safe. EmberWind is a good place. If we can go there, we can all be happy for a while, right?"

Their laughter echoed through the night, and even Haerak couldn't help but chuckle at their banter.

He nodded thoughtfully at each of them, sensing the growing warmth and connection that bound them together.

With the fire crackling in the background, they fell silent again.

Each of them lost in thoughts of EmberWind—

A glimmer of hope tugging at the edges of their concerns.

"We should talk to Captain," Yzavynne finally said, breaking the silence.

"We'll never know if we don't ask."

They exchanged looks, each of them sensing that perhaps EmberWind was exactly what they needed.

A place to call home—

A place to regroup and build anew.

Nert, leaning back casually on the log, looked up and heard movement.

He tilted his head, an easy smile spreading across his face as he recognized their approaching figures.

"Well, look who decided to join us," he said, his voice calm yet welcoming.

"Welcome back, Captain."

The others followed Nert's gaze, turning their heads toward Zach and Ruby, who were walking side by side, their steps in sync.

Zach's expression was thoughtful but warm, while Ruby looked more relaxed, her hand brushing against Zach's as they approached.

Zach nodded at Nert's greeting, giving a small smile, then he and Ruby settled onto a single log near the rest of the group.

Ruby's hand lingered on his for a moment before she let it rest in her lap, her gaze sweeping over the familiar faces around them.

There was a brief—

Comfortable silence—

Broken only by the crackling of the fire—

And the distant sound of waves lapping against the shore.

Zach glanced around, taking in each of his comrades.

It felt good to be back with them, especially after the intensity of recent events.

With a slow breath, he began.

"It sounds like EmberWind Village has come up in conversation."

Aina nodded eagerly, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him.

"We were just talking about it, actually! And about how it might be a safe place for us."

Andhur, ever the enthusiastic one, couldn't contain himself.

"Let's goooo!"

He raised a hand in mock salute, and for a moment, everyone chuckled.

But as the laughter faded, Yzavynne looked at Zach seriously.

"We... weren't sure if you'd agree, Captain. We thought maybe you'd worry about bringing trouble there."

Zach listened, nodding slowly.

He knew their concerns were valid—after all, he had been weighing those very thoughts himself.

The responsibilities they carried—

The enemies they'd made—

And the countless dangers they encountered daily weren't things easily left behind.

Kazaks, his arms crossed, spoke up with his usual directness.

"It's not just about us, Captain. We'd be involving a whole village, people who have their own lives, their own families."

"I know," Zach replied, his voice steady but gentle.

"It's something I've thought about, too. But..."

He paused, glancing at Ruby, who gave him an encouraging smile. Her quiet strength grounded him, reminding him of the possibility EmberWind could hold for them all.

"We also need somewhere to regroup, somewhere to just... breathe. We can't keep running forever."

Qarek leaned forward, his gaze thoughtful. "So, do you think we should go? Make EmberWind our next stop?"

Zach looked into the fire, as if searching for an answer in the flickering flames.

"I think... it could be what we need. A place to rest, maybe even to rebuild a bit. EmberWind's out of the way, far from the kingdoms' main paths. If we're careful, if we don't bring our conflicts there, it might just work."

Aina's eyes lit up.

"It'll be good for all of you! The village is strong, and everyone looks out for one another."

Leeani nodded, a hopeful glimmer in her eyes.

"And maybe, just maybe, we'll find a bit of peace. Even if it's only for a short while."

Nert, ever the pragmatist, let out a small sigh.

"You know, Cap, I've been thinking... we've been through so much, and all of us here—we're still standing. Maybe this is the kind of risk we're meant to take. Because without somewhere safe, without somewhere we can just exist for a bit, I'm not sure how much longer we'll last."

His words settled over them—

A quiet, powerful truth.

One by one, each member of the group nodded, acknowledging the toll of their journey—

The weariness that seemed to sink deeper every day.

Andhur clapped his hands together, his grin breaking the somber mood.

"Well, if we're going, we're going as a team! I'm ready for some real food, and maybe even a chance to relax without one eye open."

Jiighual, who had been listening quietly, gave a small chuckle.

"You're already getting excited about the food, huh?"

Andhur shrugged.

"Can't a guy look forward to the simple things?"

Laughter rippled around the circle, easing the tension as they allowed themselves to imagine EmberWind as a real possibility.

The idea of somewhere to settle—

Somewhere to gather their strength, had its own kind of magic—

A fragile hope that each of them clung to.

Zach's gaze softened as he looked at his friends, his comrades, his family.

He could see the spark in their eyes, the faint glimmers of relief and anticipation mingling together.

"Then it's settled," he said quietly, his voice filled with conviction.

"We'll go to EmberWind."

Ruby leaned against him, her hand finding his, and she smiled.

"It'll be good for everyone, Zach."

He nodded, holding her gaze.

"I think so too." Then, turning to the rest of the group, he said.

"Let's make the most of this. EmberWind might not be our last stop, but it could be the beginning of something better."

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and the fire crackled on, warming them against the cool night air.

They all sat in silence, letting the decision sink in, each of them thinking of what EmberWind could mean—a chance to rest, to heal, to remember what it felt like to live without constant fear.

And in that moment—

Surrounded by friends and warmth—

The journey ahead didn't feel as daunting.

Yzavynne let out a sigh, relaxing her posture.

She exchanged a glance with Leeani, who nodded slightly, her own eyes glistening with relief.

Kazaks leaned back against the log, the tightness in his expression softening as he absorbed their captain's decision, while Jiighual folded his arms, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Beside them, Andhur couldn't hold back his enthusiasm.

"I knew you'd come around, Captain!" he said with a wide grin

He nudges Nert beside him, who rolled his eyes in a half-joking way.

"C'mon, Nert, I told you we'd finally find a good place to put our feet up!"

Nert chuckled, feigning exasperation.

"Yeah, yeah, Andhur. Keep your voice down; the whole forest'll hear you. And besides," he added, giving Zach a small, almost sly grin

"It's not like he's doing it just to rest. Right, Captain?"

Before Zach could respond, Gargeal, who had been lingering a bit apart from the others, muttered to himself.

"EmberWind... huh?"

His voice was barely audible, as if he was speaking more to himself than anyone else.

Zach caught it, turning his gaze to Gargeal with a slight curiosity but choosing not to press him.

Instead, he took a deep breath, his hand still gently resting beside Ruby's on the log.

"So," Zach said, his voice carrying that familiar calm authority.

"What do you say? All of you—Yzavynne, Leeani, Andhur, Nert, Jiighual, Kazaks, Qarek... Are we going together?"

For a moment, an awkward silence hung in the air.

Each of them shifted slightly, glancing at one another as if caught off guard by the invitation.

This wasn't just another mission, another battle plan—

It was a journey that could take them somewhere they'd never been—

In more ways than one.

Yzavynne finally broke the silence with a soft chuckle, folding her arms.

"Well, Captain," she said, her voice carrying a gentle amusement.

"I'm not used to you asking if we want to do something. You usually just tell us where we're headed."

Leeani laughed softly beside her, giving a small nod.

"It's a bit strange, I'll admit. But... yeah, I think I want to go. For you, Captain. And for all of us."

Kazaks, though still quiet, gave a nod of agreement, his expression serious.

"We've come this far together. I'm in, Captain," he said, his tone unwavering.

Jiighual looked between Zach and the others, his thoughtful eyes narrowing slightly as he seemed to weigh the moment.

"It's not often I feel like this," he admitted quietly.

"I'm tired of running. Maybe it's time we try standing still—just for a little while."

Nert, ever the pragmatic one, sighed, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

"I'm in. Not gonna miss out on whatever EmberWind has to offer... especially if it means not sleeping with one eye open for once."

The others nodded, murmuring their agreement, until all eyes fell on Qarek, who had been quiet.

Qarek hesitated, glancing away for a brief moment before finally saying.

"I'll go. For you, Captain. And... for the rest of us."

Zach took in their words, feeling a warmth spread through his chest.

This time, he didn't bother hiding the smile that broke over his face.

It was a soft, open smile—

One that caught each of them by surprise—

As they weren't used to seeing him so unguarded.

Ruby, sitting beside him, noticed too, her own lips curving into a smile as she watched him.

She didn't say a word, but her eyes were filled with a quiet pride, a warmth that only deepened as she looked at him.

It was Andhur, of course, who broke the silence, his grin widening as he nudged Nert in the ribs.

He exclaimed, his laughter spilling over like an overflowing cup.

"Look at that, everyone! The Captain's actually smiling! This is a moment to remember!"

Yzavynne smirked, folding her arms with an amused gleam in her eyes.

"Did anyone think we'd see the day?"

Leeani joined in, chuckling softly.

"Oh, come on, Captain! If you keep this up, we're going to start expecting smiles more often."

Nert let out a laugh, clapping his hands together in mock amazement.

"We might even need to write this down somewhere," he quipped, his eyes glinting with humor.

"A smiling Captain. What's next? Maybe he'll start cracking jokes too?"

Andhur leaned back, his laughter hearty and infectious.

"Hey, don't push it, Nert! We don't want to shock him into silence again!"

He grinned, clearly delighted at the lightheartedness of the moment, and even gave an exaggerated sigh of relief.

"Maybe EmberWind will work wonders if this is the kind of effect it's having already!"

Jiighual, though more reserved, couldn't hide the faint smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth.

He shook his head, casting a sidelong glance at Kazaks, who rolled their eyes but had a hint of a smile himself.

As the gentle teasing continued, Zach simply let it happen, finding himself unable to hold back his amusement.

The quiet joy in the air, the laughter and lightheartedness—

It was a balm to the wounds, physical and emotional—

They'd all carried through countless battles and struggles.

Ruby, sensing the comfort and ease around them, gave Zach's hand a gentle squeeze, leaning in closer.

"You know," she murmured softly, her voice just for him.

"They're right. It's nice to see you smile like this."

Zach looked at her, his eyes softening even more.

He hadn't realized how much he'd been holding back, how much he had weighed himself down with responsibility and worry.

Yet, here and now—

Surrounded by his friends—

His family—

He allowed himself a rare moment of true peace.

Gargeal, still observing silently from a short distance away, caught Zach's eye for a brief moment.

Though he hadn't spoken much, there was something in his expression that conveyed understanding, a quiet solidarity.

Qarek, who had remained mostly serious up until then, cleared his throat.

"So, Captain," he said, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

"Should we expect more smiles from you now?"

Zach chuckled softly, shaking his head.

"Don't get used to it," he said, though his tone was light and gentle, and his smile lingered just a bit longer than he intended.

They shared a laugh, and the moment held, stretching out as each of them savored the lightness they hadn't felt in what seemed like ages.

The promise of EmberWind, the idea of rest and warmth—

Had already started to work its way into their hearts—

Like a gentle fire easing their burdens.

As the laughter gradually quieted, Zach took a deep breath, feeling a renewed sense of purpose.

He glanced at each of his friends, a sense of gratitude settling over him.

For the first time in a long while—

He felt like they weren't just surviving.

They were moving forward.

With a final, thoughtful look around, Zach nodded.

He said, his voice soft but filled with conviction.

"Let's make EmberWind a reality."
