CHAPTER 25

The quiet night seemed to deepen as Ruby's words settled into the air.

Their significance stretching between them like a bridge they'd never dared to cross before.

Zach's gaze lingered on her, his hand instinctively tightening around hers as the realization of her question, of what she truly meant, sank in.

They both turned slightly, faces now only inches apart, the warmth of her touch grounding him in a way nothing else could.

For a moment, Ruby closed her eyes, as if gathering her courage, and leaned closer.

It was just a soft kiss on his cheek, gentle and fleeting, but it felt like a spark, lighting something within him that he hadn't known he'd kept hidden.

When she drew back, her cheeks flushed with a mixture of bashfulness and bravery, she looked away, biting her lip.

But Zach wasn't about to let the moment pass.

With a softness that belied his usual composure, he lifted his hand, gently brushing a stray strand of hair from her face before leaning forward.

His lips met her forehead in a tender kiss that lingered, his touch warm and reassuring.

It was an unspoken promise—

A silent vow whispered against her skin.

She closed her eyes, leaning into him.

Her breath hitching as he pulled back just slightly.

And then, as if drawn together by an unseen thread, their eyes met once more, and he leaned in, bridging the last of the distance between them.

His lips found hers in a kiss that was both delicate and profound.

As though they were rediscovering something long lost—

Something precious and irreplaceable.

The warmth of their connection felt like the calm after a storm, a quiet certainty that settled deep within them.

When they finally pulled back, both of them were smiling, soft and shy, yet full of a happiness they hadn't allowed themselves to hope for before.

The stars above continued their gentle drift, casting a soft glow over them, making the moment feel timeless.

Zach looked at her, his gaze unwavering, and there was something new in his eyes—

A tenderness that she knew was only for her.

Without a word, Ruby nestled into his side, her head resting on his shoulder as they returned their gazes to the horizon, their hands intertwined.

The future felt uncertain—

Their battles far from over—

But for now, in this moment—

They had found something more.

Ruby shifted slightly, lifting her head from Zach's shoulder, and her gaze settled on him, eyes reflecting a mixture of wonder and quiet hope.

It was a look that spoke volumes—

One he could feel settling into his heart as he held her hand a bit tighter.

"Zach..." she started, her voice soft, almost hesitant.

"Do you... ever think about the future? About where we're heading... and what it might look like?"

Her fingers traced gentle patterns over his, the touch soothing, almost as if she was afraid he might turn away.

Zach turned to her, eyes thoughtful.

He took a deep breath, his gaze tracing the line of the horizon, where the stars met the faint glow of the dawn.

"Sometimes, yeah," he replied quietly.

"I think about it more than I used to. There's so much we've been through... and honestly, I never thought about what could come after all this. I didn't even know if there would be an 'after.'"

She nodded, her hand stilling in his.

"Me neither. I was always so focused on the present... on surviving, getting through the next battle, taking the next step."

She paused, biting her lip thoughtfully.

"But now... with you, Zach, it feels like there's something more. Something worth looking forward to..."

"...  something worth building."

Her words settled over him like a gentle warmth, and he found himself nodding, understanding her sentiment completely.

There was something in the way she spoke, so soft and earnest, that made him feel that she was talking not just to him, but to a part of his heart that he'd kept locked away.

"What do you want, Ruby?" he asked, his voice barely more than a whisper.

"If you could choose... if there wasn't anyone or anything holding us back, what would you want our future to look like?"

Ruby's eyes drifted upwards as though the stars held the answer.

"I want... a life that's ours, you know? Somewhere quiet, where we don't have to fight or run, where we can... just be ourselves. I'd like that."

She chuckled softly, a little sheepishly.

"It might sound simple, but that's all I want. A home, somewhere we can call our own. Maybe... maybe even a family."

Her voice softened on that last word, and she glanced at him, a hint of vulnerability in her gaze.

He felt his heart tighten at her words, the sincerity of her hope striking a deep chord within him.

He repeated.

"A family."

The thought was both startling and comforting. He'd never thought of that kind of future for himself—

He'd always been the warrior, the one at the front, shielding others, sacrificing his own dreams.

But with Ruby, the idea of having a home, a life...

It felt like it could be possible.

Ruby asked, her voice gentle.

"And what about you, Zach?"

Her fingers brushing against his as if urging him to share something he'd kept hidden.

Zach took a slow breath, allowing himself to imagine the future she described.

"Honestly... it sounds almost too good to be true. But I want it too, Ruby. I want what you just said."

He paused, looking down at their intertwined hands.

"I want to be somewhere safe, somewhere... where I don't have to be looking over my shoulder, where the only things I'm worried about are small, everyday things."

His gaze softened as he looked at her.

"And I want you there with me. You're... you're the one thing I'm certain of, Ruby. Through everything, you're the one constant that I want."

Ruby's eyes glistened, and she gave him a tender smile, reaching up to brush a stray lock of hair from his face.

"Zach, we'll make it happen. I know it won't be easy, but... I believe we'll find a way. Together."

They fell into a comfortable silence, simply watching the night sky, the stars twinkling above as if in quiet agreement.

It was peaceful, as if the world had paused for just the two of them—

Granting them this rare—

Unguarded moment to dream of a future unburdened by the past.

Ruby asked softly, almost as though she was afraid of the answer.

"Do you think... we'd be happy?"

Zach's hand tightened around hers.

"If it's with you, I know we would be," he replied, the conviction in his voice unmistakable.

"We'd find happiness, Ruby, and we'd protect it, just like we've protected everything else we've cared about. Only this time... we'd be building something we chose, something we fought for, not because we had to, but because we wanted it."

She looked down, a quiet smile forming on her lips as she leaned into him once more, resting her head against his shoulder.

"Then let's make that our goal. Let's promise to build a life where we can find that happiness, where we can protect it."

The words settling between them like a pact, an unspoken vow that they both understood was more real than any words could convey.

Zach wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close.

"We will, Ruby. Whatever it takes, we'll find that home."

Ruby lifted her head slightly, her eyes curious.

"When you were talking about a place where we'd be safe, you seemed... so sure. What exactly did you have in mind, Zach?"

He paused, glancing out over the dark, rippling sea, the vastness of it mirroring the scope of his thoughts.

"I've thought about it for a while, actually," he began, his voice calm and measured.

"Not just any place would work for us. It'd have to be somewhere that's... strategically hidden. I don't mean an obvious fortress or an easily guarded city. We need somewhere that's less detectable, less desirable for anyone to look at twice."

Ruby's curiosity deepened, and she leaned closer, caught in his vision.

"My thought," he continued.

"Is a place small enough that it'd fall under the radar of any kingdom, but resourceful enough that we'd be able to sustain ourselves, even if we couldn't trade with outside regions. If we build it in a valley, surrounded by cliffs and dense forest, it would be naturally sheltered. I'm thinking somewhere hard to reach, but close enough to a water source so we'd have a reliable supply."

He gestured with his hand, almost as if mapping it out in front of him.

"Imagine a secluded area with thick woods at its borders. Not only would the trees provide cover and camouflage, but we could use them for timber, for building homes and fortifications. We'd settle somewhere between, where the terrain is uneven enough that it's tough to navigate unless you know it well—plenty of trails and routes that wind through it, confusing enough that any intruder would feel disoriented if they didn't know the land like we do."

Ruby nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on him with an admiration that grew deeper as he spoke.

"And what about food?"

He gave a faint smile, clearly having thought of that.

"We'd need fertile soil for crops—somewhere close enough to plant and harvest without risking exposure. Maybe we could rotate where we plant every season, keep certain fields fallow to preserve the land. It would take discipline, but it's possible. And we'd have small hunting parties, people familiar enough with the land to gather what we need without overhunting or exhausting the local wildlife. We'd want to keep the place sustainable."

A soft hum of appreciation escaped Ruby's lips.

"So... it'd be like our own village, our own hidden sanctuary."

He nodded, his gaze intense.

"Yes, exactly. A village where we set our own rules, where people can live without the constant fear of attacks, or being dragged into kingdom politics or wars. Somewhere that doesn't rely on anyone but ourselves. It'd take time to build, but once it's up, it could be self-sustaining. Even if the rest of the world goes to hell... this place would be safe. For everyone we care about."

She looked at him with a glimmer of hope.

"You really think it could work?"

Zach's eyes softened as he met her gaze.

"I do. We've survived on less, in worse conditions. If we're careful, if we all commit to building something like this... I think it could work. Not just for us, but for everyone who's been lost or abandoned, for those who don't have anywhere else to go."

Ruby reached out, her fingers lightly tracing over his hand.

"It sounds... it sounds like a dream, but it's one I want, too."

He turned to her, a quiet determination in his eyes.

"Then let's make it our goal. A place where we're safe, where we can rest at night without wondering if someone's coming for us. Somewhere for you, for us..."

"... A home."

As the night deepened and the crackling of the campfire filled the air with warmth, Haerak took a moment to observe the scene before him.

His daughter, Aina, was laughing with Andhur, Yzavynne, and Leeani, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames.

It reminded him of simpler times, moments when laughter was more common than worry.

Gathering his thoughts, he took a deep breath and approached Zach and Ruby, who were seated on the sand, engaged in a quiet conversation.

"Zach," Haerak began, his voice steady yet slightly hesitant.

"Do you have a moment?"

Zach turned his attention to Haerak, nodding with a welcoming expression.

"Of course. What's on your mind?"

Haerak took a seat beside them, grateful for the warmth of the fire and the sense of camaraderie that enveloped him.

"I realized that we didn't get the chance to introduce ourselves properly earlier. I'm Haerak, Aina's father."

Ruby smiled gently, her eyes softening with understanding.

"It's nice to finally meet you, Haerak. Aina speaks highly of you."

"Thank you," he replied, a hint of pride swelling in his chest.

"I wanted to take a moment to explain a few things. Tomorrow morning, Aina and I will be leaving for EmberWind Village, just north of here."

Zach's brow furrowed slightly at the news.

"EmberWind Village? Is everything all right?"

Haerak nodded, though a weight still lingered on his heart.

"Yes, everything is fine. It's just... the people from the village are expecting us. They're sending a ship to pick us up after our travels and adventures."

He paused, gauging Zach's reaction.

"I'm sorry for not mentioning this sooner to the rest of your group—Gargeal, Andhur, Qarek. I didn't trust them at first, and I didn't want to put Aina in a position where she might be at risk."

Zach offered a reassuring smile.

"It's understandable. Trust takes time, especially after everything that's happened. You're doing what you believe is best for Aina."

Ruby chimed in, her voice gentle and comforting.

"We all have our pasts and our reasons for being cautious. You have every right to protect her, Haerak. It's what any parent would do."

Haerak felt a wave of relief wash over him, grateful for their understanding.

"Thank you for saying that. It means more than you know."

He glanced over at Aina and Andhur, their laughter ringing out like a sweet melody.

"My daughter Aina—she has formed a bond with Andhur. They've become close friends, and I think it's important for her to feel that connection, especially now."

Zach followed Haerak's gaze, watching the two young people interact.

"They do seem to have a good friendship. It's nice to see them enjoying themselves after everything we've faced."

Haerak returned his attention to Zach, the seriousness of the moment creeping back into his voice.

"I want to ask you something, Zach. Would you consider coming with us? To EmberWind Village?"

Zach hesitated, clearly weighing the implications of such a decision.

"It's a tempting offer. EmberWind sounds like a safe haven. But... what about the others? We have responsibilities here, and our mission isn't finished yet."

Haerak nodded, understanding the weight of the choice.

"I understand. But think about it, Zach. A safe place for your group, a chance to regroup and heal. You could find peace there, and your team could use that after all we've faced."

Ruby interjected softly.

"It's a big decision, Zach. But if Haerak's village can offer safety, it might be worth considering. We can't keep fighting like this without taking care of ourselves."

Zach contemplated her words, his gaze drifting back to the fire, where the flames danced and flickered, mirroring the turmoil in his mind.

"You're right. We've been on edge for so long, always preparing for the next battle. Maybe it's time to consider a moment of respite."

Haerak leaned forward, his eyes earnest.

"If you do decide to come, you won't regret it. EmberWind is a place of refuge. We have the resources to help you all heal and recover."

Zach finally met Haerak's gaze, a sense of determination settling over him.

"I'll discuss it with the others, but I can't make any promises right now. We need to consider everyone's feelings before making such a significant decision."

"Of course," Haerak said, his tone respectful and understanding.

"I don't want to pressure you. Just know that the invitation is there, and Aina would love to have her friends with her."

As they spoke, Aina and Andhur caught snippets of the conversation and exchanged glances, curiosity written on their faces.

They were young, still learning about the complexities of life and trust, but the bond they had formed was evident.

Haerak continued.

"I want Aina to feel supported and safe, and I see that in the way you all interact. That's why this is important to me."

Zach nodded, appreciating the depth of Haerak's concern for his daughter.

"Family is everything. It's what drives us to fight and protect one another."

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves around them, carrying with it the whispers of the night.

The stars twinkled above—

A reminder that even in darkness—

There was beauty.

Haerak smiled at Zach, sensing a kindred spirit in the young leader.

"I know it's a big step. But sometimes we need to take risks to find the peace we're searching for."

Ruby's eyes shone with kindness as she added.

"No matter what decision you make, just know that you have our support. We're in this together, after all."

"Thank you," Haerak said, his voice warm with gratitude.

"I appreciate that more than you know."

He looked back toward Aina and Andhur, who were still engaged in their playful banter.

The sight filled him with hope.

It reminded him of the strength found in bonds formed through shared experiences.

With a sigh, Haerak turned back to Zach.

"Whenever you're ready to talk about it, I'll be here. I want what's best for Aina and for everyone involved."

Haerak walked away toward the campfire.

The night air felt thick with unspoken thoughts, and Ruby, her gaze still lingering on Haerak, turned to Zach, a hint of concern in her eyes.

"Zach," she began softly.

"Why didn't you answer Haerak about coming to the village? It seemed like a good opportunity for all of us."

Zach took a deep breath, his mind racing through the implications of their potential decision.

"Ruby, I know it sounds like a perfect escape, but we have to consider the possibility that EmberWind Village might not be as safe as it seems."

Ruby raised an eyebrow, encouraging him to elaborate.

"What do you mean?"

He shifted his weight, his fingers brushing the cool sand as he gathered his thoughts.

"Think about it. If Haerak's people are waiting for them, they might be vulnerable. Word could have spread about the conflict we've been involved in, and the kingdoms we've crossed paths with may send their forces to investigate. If we show up there, it could put them in danger."

Ruby nodded slowly, understanding the weight of his words.

"But isn't it better to take that risk together? Strength in numbers, right? We could help protect them, and they could offer us shelter."

Zach sighed, running a hand through his hair, frustration mingling with concern.

"Yes, that's true, but think about the bigger picture. We don't know how far the reach of those kingdoms extends. They might already have spies, and if they find out we're headed to EmberWind, they could target it directly. What if we lead them right to Haerak and Aina's home?"

Ruby's brow furrowed as she processed his reasoning.

"You're saying we'd be putting everyone in jeopardy simply by trying to find safety?"

"Exactly. We can't afford to be reckless, especially after everything we've faced. It's not just about us anymore; it's about everyone we've come to care for."

A silence stretched between them as Ruby contemplated his words.

Finally, she spoke, her voice imbued with a calm resolve.

"I understand your concern, Zach, but we also have to think about what we truly want. We've been fighting for so long, constantly on the move. Maybe we need a place to heal, a chance to find some semblance of normalcy."

Zach met her gaze, the intensity of her expression stirring something within him.

"But at what cost? We can't ignore the risks. I've seen firsthand how quickly things can spiral out of control."

Ruby leaned closer, her eyes sparkling with conviction.

"Sometimes, you have to take risks to find hope, Zach. Remember why we started this journey? It wasn't just about survival. It was about finding a home, a place where we could be safe and happy."

Her words resonated deeply within him, and for a moment, Zach felt the weight of his fears begin to lift.

"I know that," he admitted, his voice softening.

"But what if we fail? What if we put our friends in danger? What if we put them and his people in danger? I can't bear the thought of losing anyone else."

Ruby reached out, placing her hand over his.

"We can't live our lives in fear of what might happen. If we don't try to reach for something better, we'll only continue to exist in this cycle of fighting and fleeing. Sometimes, the greatest danger is not taking a chance at all."

Zach studied her, captivated by the passion in her voice and the determination in her eyes.

Her unwavering belief in the possibility of a brighter future ignited a flicker of hope within him.

"What if you're right?" he mused, contemplating her perspective.

Ruby smiled, her eyes gentle yet firm.

"I believe I am. We can protect EmberWind together. We have each other, and we can build something beautiful out of the ashes of our struggles."

Zach felt the walls he had built around his heart begin to crack as he listened to her.

He said, a hint of disbelief lacing his tone.

"You make it sound so simple."

"Maybe it is," Ruby replied softly, squeezing his hand reassuringly.

"We've been through hell and back, but that doesn't mean we can't find peace and happiness. All I'm asking is that you trust in us, in our ability to protect one another."

Zach's mind raced as he considered her words.

The idea of EmberWind Village began to shift from a dangerous gamble to a potential refuge—

A place where they could rebuild—

Not just survive.

Zach's mind raced as he considered her words.

He asked, his voice laced with uncertainty.

"You really think we could be safe there?"

"I do," Ruby replied confidently.

"And think about Aina. She deserves to feel secure, to have friends around her who care for her. We all do. If we can be that for each other, then we owe it to ourselves to try."

Zach felt a warmth spread through him, a sense of connection that solidified the bond he shared with Ruby.

"You're right," he said, a newfound determination beginning to take root.

"We need to at least discuss this with the others. If we can make a plan to ensure everyone's safety, we could consider going."

"Exactly!" Ruby beamed, her enthusiasm infectious.

"Let's bring it up with the group. We'll lay out the risks and the benefits, and we can decide together."

Zach felt the weight of his doubts slowly dissipating.

Maybe Ruby was right.

Maybe it was time to embrace the possibility of a brighter future.

Even if it came with risks.

"Thank you, Ruby," he said softly, his heart swelling with appreciation.

"I don't know what I'd do without you."

She smiled, her eyes glimmering in the firelight.

"You'll never have to find out. We're in this together, no matter what."

With renewed hope, he looked toward the campfire where the others gathered, their laughter echoing into the night.

"Let's do this," he said, determination lighting up his features.

"Let's find a way to make it work."

And with that, a sense of purpose settled over Zach, intertwining with the warmth of Ruby's hand in his.

Whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together—

And perhaps—

Just perhaps—

They could carve out a future that was worth fighting for.
