The Truth comes Out!

In the last chapter...

"Your name... The necklace... breathed Mrs. Bucket "I don't believe it! Esme, we thought you were dead!"

"What?" I asked, confused.

"Mom?" Charlie asked her "are you alright?"

"Charlie" she said, holding his shoulders "Esme is your..."

"...cousin!" Finished Mrs. Bucket.

Everyone's jaw dropped, even Willy's! And I don't think he's even paying attention, he was going through the cupboards!

"What?" I asked, now I was really confused.

"You don't remember, do you?" Mrs. Bucket asked me.

"I have no memory of anything before I was eight years old" I said "What happened?"

"You were my sister, Emily Bucket's daughter. She and her husband Edward brought you to visit us around the time Charlie was just two years old" she said.

"That explains why I didn't remember you" said Charlie "the last time I saw you, I was so young!"

"And you grew so much since then" said his grandpa "I didn't recognize you either."

"You were the sweetest little girl we knew" said Mrs. Bucket "but that night as you left with your parents, there was a snow storm. The police came to our door saying that your car slid off the road and they managed to pull your parent's bodies from the car but they couldn't find any sign of you..."

"Did my parents make it?" I asked.

"No dear" she said, sadly "they died in the hospital the day after the accident."

I felt tears forming in my eyes. I felt someone hold my hand, I looked over and saw it was Willy. I gave him a small smile.

Mrs. Bucket nodded grimly, remembering my parents death. "When they couldn't find any sign of you, we figured you died in the blaze of the car" she said, wiping away a tear. "But now you're back!" She said happily.

"But how did you survive?" Asked Charlie.

I tried to remember my parents, I tried to remember my life before the factory. Then it happened a strange light flashed before my eyes and I remembered it all! I remembered my mother! She had dark hair and always smelled like sweets. And my father had blond hair and loved to dance with me. We owned a bakery in another town together.

Then I remembered the accident, it was horrible! The car just kept flipping and spinning and the glass windows shattered. The car finally stopped flipping and I managed to get out of it, crawling out of a window.

I waited for my parents outside the car... but they never came out. Then the car burst into flames and I heard the police sirens down the street. The sound scared me and I ran away, I slipped through the huge iron gates of the factory and kept running. I noticed one of the warehouse doors opened and I ran in there to hide.

But once inside I tripped and fell head first on the cement floor. The last thing I saw was the word Wonka written on the box...

I snapped back to reality and gasped, falling to my knee's. I began to cry right there on the floor.

Willy lowered down beside me. "You had a flashback?" He asked me.

I could only nod.

Charlie came over and hugged me. I hugged him back. He helped me over to the bed where the rest of the  grandparents were. Charlie's other grandpa offered me a handkerchief, I accepted it.

"Esme?" Charlie asked softly "if you don't mind me asking... where were you all this time?"

I wiped away my tears, bit my lip and tucked some hair behind my ear nervously. I sighed, this was it, I had to tell the truth.

"I have a confession to make..." I announced "the truth is... I lost my memory after the crash and I have been living secretly in Willy's chocolate factory."

Willy looked confused, then he laughed. "But that's impossible!" He said "The gates have been locked for years! And I haven't even seen you in the factory! Heh!"

"That's because I was hiding  the whole time..." I said "I didn't come out because..."

I looked at his beautiful purple eyes, and he looked at me.

"...because I was too shy" I finished. I couldn't tell him I loved him, not yet.

"Oh" said Willy, almost sadly.

"But enough about me" I said a little cheerier "I understand Charlie's won something?"

"Yeah" he said, his smile returning "I'm going to give this little boy my entire factory."

"You must be joking!" Said Charlie's grandpa.

"No, really, it's true" said Willy "cause you see just last week I was having my semi annual haircut and I had the strangest realization. A grey hair-- my first grey hair! In that one silver hair I saw reflected my life's work, my factory, my beloved oompa loompa's, who would watch over them when I was gone? I realized in that moment, that I must find a heir... and I did Charlie... you."

"That's why you sent out the golden tickets?" Said Charlie.

"Uh-huh!" Willy replied  "I invited five children to the factory and the one that would be the least rotten would be the winner!"

"That's you Charlie" said his grandpa.

"So what do you say?" Asked Willy "are you ready to leave all this behind and come live with me at the factory?"

"Sure!" Said Charlie "of course! I mean if it's alright my family can come too?"

"Oh, my dear boy, of course they can't!" Willy said with a smile.

I looked at him, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"You can't run a chocolate factory with a family hanging over you like an old dead goose!" Willy went on "No offense..."

"None taken... jerk" said Charlie's other grandpa. I had to agree with him.

"A Chocolatier has to run solo, he has to follow his dreams! Gosh darn the consequences!" Said Willy "look at me, I have no family and I'm a giant success!"

"So if I go with you to  the factory, I won't ever see my family again?" Charlie asked.

"Yeah!" Willy smiled "consider that a bonus!"

"Then I'm not going" Charlie told him "I wouldn't give up my family for anything, not for all the chocolate in the world."

I smiled at Charlie, he truly was a winner. He knew a family like his was the greatest prize of all.

Willy looked genuinely confused and hurt by his choice.

"Oh, I see... That's weird" he said "...there's other candy too besides chocolate?"

This threw me over the edge. How could he honestly make him choose between his own family and sweets?

"Wonka, he said no" I told Willy.

He looked at me, this time more hurt then confused.

"What is the matter with you?" I asked him "he has a family that loves him and you're asking him to choose? You may just think about candy all the time, but there are way more important things in life! Like love, for instance! But I doubt you know what that feels like! All my life, all I wanted was for someone to love me, but it's clear now that no one does! Just leave him and his family alone! They have something you'll never have! No matter how much success you have!"

Maybe it was the tears in my eyes, messing up my vision, but I swear I saw a tear roll down his cheek.

Without another word Willy Wonka stepped into the elevator and took off into the sky.

I watched him go and wiped away the tears in my eyes.

"I'm sorry, Charlie" I told him "I know it wa stout choice to make, but I just had to say something."

Suddenly Charlie ran up and hugged me. "You said exactly what I was thinking, Esme" he told me.

Mr. and Mrs. Bucket came over to us. "And if you have nowhere else to go, you can stay with us" said Mr. Bucket "You are family after all."

"As long as you don't mind tight quarters" said Mrs. Bucket.

"Not at all" I said "I spent most of my life sleeping in a heating duct."

"We can share my bed" Charlie offered.

"Sure" I smiled greatfully.

That night Charlie and I sat in bed together.

"Esme?" He asked me.

"Yeah?" I asked.

"Did you like Mr. Wonka?" He asked.

"I suppose" I said.

"What I mean is... did you love him?" He asked.

I put a strand of hair behind my ear and sighed. "Do you really want the truth?" I asked him.

He nodded.

"Well, truth be told... I loved Willy Wonka from the moment I layed eyes on him" I said "but sometimes you can love someone and realize that they don't love you back..."

"Maybe that's not the case" he stated.

I looked at him "what do you mean?"

"Well, sometimes people go without love for so long they forget what it's  like?" He explained "And they just need someone to remind them."

"You know, you're pretty smart for your age" I said "Did you ever consider becoming a psychiatrist?"

"No."

"I think you'd be a good doctor."

"You know, you were wrong about one thing when you told off Mr. Wonka?" He said.

"I was?" I asked.

"When you said nobody loves you?"  He said "We do. We love you, Esme."

"I love you guys too" I grinned.

Charlie fell asleep shortly after, I turned to look out the window, to see the chocolate factory. I even though I tried to think of something else, I couldn't help but think about what Willy was doing at that moment.

              🍫Willy's P.O.V 🍫

I sat looking out my office window, I looked down at the Bucket house. I thought when Esme left I would stop thinking about her, but she was stuck in my brain!

I sighed sadly. Whatever illness she had, it was really sticking to me!

An oompa loompa brought me my fifth mug hot chocolate. It seemed even sugar didn't perk me up anymore either.

The oompa loompa stared at me.

"Can I ask you something?" I asked him.

He nodded.

"What does it mean when your stomach is in knots and your heart pounds in your chest and your brain is scrabbled?" I asked "And it's all caused by a girl?"

He pulled out a bussiness card gave it to me. It read:

Dr. Loompa, Psychiatrist.
We won't shrink your head, just fix it!

"Well, it's either this or continue to drown my sorrow's in hot chocolate?" I said "Maybe I'll do both."
