Chapter 3
A call came from Mia.
"Hi Sophie. I...I'm sorry for not telling you this earlier. I didn't mean to keep it from you." Mia started in a low tone. "I cheated during the Scholarship Exam because I really needed the scholarship. My family really needed the money for my school fees. I-"
"It isn't your fault. I know you have your difficulties, Mia. Well, but now, we have to find someone to pass this on to, or else I will die." I said, trying to calm down.
"But who? I can't let anyone know!" Mia exclaimed, worried. "I don't want anyone to die, either!"
Suddenly, Mia hung up.
I checked for messages, but there were none from Mia. Oh dear, could she have got into trouble? Or maybe she had to go.
Just when I thought all was over, a message popped up on my phone.
Sophie Taylor, you're up next! You have 58 minutes and 49 seconds left. Pass the secret quickly, or death's coming. Good luck!
- THE UNKNOWN
I didn't know this game still existed even after school. But it's better if I die than Mia. Mia's life is bad enough, and she couldn't leave her grandpa alone. My family, I had Mum and Sis. They would be fine without me if they knew I saved my friend's life, right?
"What happened? You look like you just saw a ghost," Sis joked from behind.
"N...nothing happened. I'm fine, just a bit of...stomachache, that's all." I replied before heading back to my room.
I shut the door and sat down on the edge of my bed. Tears flowed down from my eyes as I curled myself up, helpless. Now that I have Mia's secret, what should I do? Who do I pass it to? I was never prepared for such a decision...
I couldn't sit there and do nothing at all. I had to find someone who was willing to keep the secret.
"Miss Little Careless, you left the stove on. Do you wish to burn down the house?" Sis called from the hallway.
"Sorry about that!" I shouted back.
Not knowing what exactly was I planning to do, I grabbed my hoodie from the door knob and headed out of the room. "You can have your dinner first, I gotta go real quick." I muttered, before walking out of the house.
I jogged along Netune Avenue, where rows of houses were. I wanted to get a breather. I wanted to take my mind off that Pass The Secret game. I knew it was real, I knew it was deadly, and my decision would change everything. That was why it was important.
This could be my last jog. My last hour.
But I couldn't bear to leave just like that. Over some stupid game.
I can't leave Mia alone. She would blame herself if I die. Because she passed the secret to me.
So, I had to pass it on. No matter whether Mia gets bullied after that.
Suddenly, I heard familiar voices. There was a tall man with glasses and a lady who was wearing a luxury bag. They seemed to be about my age. When they walked closer to me, I realised who they were.
The man was Alex and the lady was Michelle. Michelle and I were best friends when we were younger, like at seven or eight. We hung out all the time, going on shopping trips and sleepovers at each other's houses. We were like sisters and shared secrets with one another. I enjoyed her company a lot. We would secretly eat sweets in class when the teacher wasn't looking.
Once, we even got punished together for cheating during a test. I was crying rivers while I was scolded. It was Michelle who stayed by my side and told the teacher it was her fault instead of mine. She sacrificed herself for me. That was what kept our friendship strong.
But we were no longer friends anymore. Ever since last year. She knew I had a crush on a boy in my class called Alex. I always wanted to be with him. However, Michelle secretly had a crush on him too. But she didn't tell me, not wanting to hurt my feelings.
Last year, I wanted to confess to Alex about my feelings. But when I was about to, I saw Michelle holding hands with him in the school hallway. They were smiling at each other and laughing. That was what hurt my feelings most. I slapped Michelle on the face and she yelled at me.
We got into a conflict and were no longer friends. Michelle, who was still fuming mad at me after that incident, started bullying me. She tripped me in the hallway, spread rumors about me, and did whatever she could to make me fail at everything. Once, she even poisoned my food and caused me to not be able to participate in the National Junior Badminton Competition. I hated her a lot.
Now, it guess it's my time for revenge. At last.
