Chapter Twenty Five
Draco turned onto his back, feeling the mattress spring up and down. He wasn't feeling too good and he couldn't sleep although he didn't want to get up and go downstairs since it wasn't his house.
"James," whispered Draco, into the night air which was thick with sleep, "James, are you awake?"
"No..." muttered James and turned to face him with one eye open and the other closed, "Someone better be dying."
"Don't say that," frowned Draco and sat up in bed. His stomach lurched and he clutched it painfully.
"What's up?" asked James and then grinned, "want me to get Hermione? We can switch rooms for a while."
"She'll probably be asleep," shrugged Draco as the pain in his stomach eased. James buried his face into his pillow.
"I'm going to sleep!" he said and turned around.
"I'm going to get a drink," decided Draco.
He was quite aware that this wasn't his house but he was also aware of his practically dry throat. He pulled on a random shirt, grabbed his wand, and stepped out of the room. As he buttoned his shirt half to his chest and then left it as pain shot through him again. Just as quickly the pain eased and he sighed, not knowing why it hurt so much. Draco walked down the eery and dark corridor.
The kitchen was empty and the hands of the clock were all facing to sleep, except for Fred's. Draco tore his eyes away and looked for a glass. He found one in a cupboard and filled it up with water. He wished he had some sort of medicine. He shrugged thy thought away and then his mind thought of Hermione. She was probably sleeping. Maybe dreaming but he hoped not a nightmare. The girl had been through way too much and some of it was his own fault. Why did he have to be so stupid and turn he in. He didn't deserve her. She deserved Potter. Atleast he would be able to take care of her.
"Can't sleep?" asked Hermione's voice and making him jump.
He looked up to see Hermione in a pink pyjama top and white pyjama bottom. She smiled and Draco couldn't help but smile back. Hermione sat down in front of him and Draco stretched his legs so that they were brushing her's then, realising what his thoughts had just been about, he took his legs away.
"You should be asleep," muttered Hermione, looking at him.
Draco shrugged and searched her face, "so should you."
"I can't sleep. I keep worrying about you, Draco. Are you okay?" she asked and Draco frowned and nodded, "Please tell me if you are not. I-"
"Don't worry about me," said Draco angrily.
"Draco," whispered Hermione. She stood up and for a second, a horrible second, Draco thought she was leaving but she only moved to sit next to him, "Listen to me-"
"No, you listen to me," said Draco. He turned around so that he was facing her and Hermione raised her eyebrow, "Why do you trust me so much? For all you know I could be doing all this, pretending that I like you and that I'm helping you, because my father said so. How can you trust me?"
"I trust you because, Draco, I can tell that you are not lying to me. The love that I see in your eyes every time I see you isn't pretend and I know that," Hermione took his face in he hands, "I love you, Draco."
"No, you don't!" yelled Draco, twisting out of her hands, he lowered his voice, "You only think you do because I got you out of the prison which is my basement. You don't love me. You should be with someone who can actually provide for you not some death eater who could go to azkaban at any given time."
"I'll follow you into Azkaban if I have to," stated Hermione.
Draco, furiously, turned to face her, "You will not give up your life for me, understand?"
"Why do you care so much?" asked Hermione, "It's because you love me, Draco. You know you do so stop trying to break my heart."
"I don't want to break your heart. Yes, Hermione, I love you," said Draco and he sighed, "But I can't be with you. Please, try to understand. Potter loves you too and you're better off with him."
"Don't try to pick out reason just because you, Draco Malfoy, are a coward. You're scared of the future! Stop being such a coward," Hermione turned around so she wasn't facing him, "I don't want Harry. I want you, Draco."
"I'm not being a coward. Yes, I am scared but I'm scared for you. Please look at me," said Draco but Hermione didn't look at him. He took her hand in his but she glared at him and stood up, ripping her hand out of his grip.
"Tell me when you're back in your senses," glared Hermione.
She made to walk away but Draco stood up and caught her wrist. He pulled her back and she frowned at him. Draco pulled he in for a hug and she pushed him away again.
"You don't want to be with me? You think I'm better off without you?" she said, pushing at Draco's chest, "I'm leaving then. I have no reason to be here if you don't want to be with me."
"You are not leaving," said Draco.
"Oh yeah? Who's going to stop me?" asked Hermione.
She scowled at him and made for the back door. Her wand, which was stowed in her pyjama bottoms, was in her hand now and she unlocked the back door. Fear settled into Draco's heart, thick and heavy, as she walked out without a backwards glance.
"Hermione, please!" said Draco.
He walked to the door to see that she was standing a few feet from him. She crossed her arms over her chest and Draco frowned as she grinned.
"You came after me," she stated and walked towards him, "You can't just let me go that easy.
"I don't want you to get hurt. Now come on and go to bed," Draco grabbed her hand and pulled her inside. Locking the door, he turned back to face her and she was staring at his face, "What?"
"You're being stupid. You're going to lose me because of your stupidity. I love you so much, Draco, and I know that you love me. Can you bear to see me with, Harry? Doesn't it strike your heart at all? When he nearly kissed me, you got so angry, you were about to punch him. How can you just let me go like that?" asked Hermione, a tear fell from her eye and Draco sighed.
"Don't cry," he whispered and hugged her again.
"Promise me you won't leave me," muttered Hermione, into his chest.
"I promise," muttered Draco after a pause.
"Malfoy," a voice said behind them.
A male voice that sounded way too familiar to Hermione's ears. They turned around to see Harry standing at the doorway. He had a plain white top on and grey trousers.
"Potter," said Draco, he tried to keep the hate out of his voice but Hermione heard it. She grabbed his hand, "What brings you down here?"
"I want to leave as soon as possible but I have one more thing to do before that," said Harry, ignoring Hermione and glaring at Draco.
"Yeah? What's that?" asked Draco.
"To get all of the death eaters into Azkaban. We'll get your father and he'll know where everyone else is," Harry's eyes flickered to Hermione for a brief second and looked back to Draco, "You're a death eater too, Malfoy."
Hermione clutched his hand tighter as Draco looked at her fe a second then turned to face Harry.
"You going to turn me in?" asked Draco.
Harry's eyes flickered again to Hermione and stayed there. Hermione stared back, hoping with anything and everything she had that he would let Draco go. Harry looked down at the spotless wooden floor and then to Draco.
"If I do, she'll get hurt. Unlike you, I actually care about her," said Harry, gesturing to Hermione.
"You think I don't care about her? After everything we've been through..." Draco turned to Hermione, "Maybe you should go to bed."
Hermione frowned at him and he rolled his eyes as she shook her head. Of course not, he thought. Why would she?
"She believed you and you betrayed her. What did you? Crucio her until she screamed for you to stop? You hurt her in probably more than one way and still-" Harry was getting closer and closer to Draco.
"Still she chooses me," muttered Draco, letting go of Hermione's hand, he walked forward so they were in each other's faces, "It's weird how she doesn't choose you after all I did to her..."
"Draco, please," muttered Hermione grabbing his arm and pulling him back but Draco wouldn't budge.
"She can really be so naive... Did you tell her about that day in the third year when-"
Draco cut Harry off by pushing him.
"Shut up," he muttered.
"What day, Draco? What's going on?" asked Hermione, grabbing Draco's arm, she tried to turn him around but he shrugged her off, "Draco Malfoy! Look at me, right now!"
"Hermione, just shut up!" said Harry, turning to her, "Even you shouldn't be so stupid as to believe everything he told you. You don't know about that bet he made in-"
Draco punched Harry square in the jaw and Harry staggered backwards until his back hit the table. He got up and spat out some blood.
"She should know that by now, right? Maybe it'll change her while perspective of thinking that she loves you," said Harry, blood dripping to the floor, "No one could love you, especially not her."
Draco punched Harry again, making him fall to the floor with a grunt. Draco kept punching him and Harry let out drawn out moans. Hermione stared on with horror and the inability to move. Harry grabbed something off the table and smashed it on the side f Draco's head. Blood poured out and Hermione nearly shrieked, though she couldn't make a sound if her life depended on it, as Draco fell to the ground, clutching his head.
"Come on, then. Get up and fight!" muttered Harry, his eye was swollen and his mouth was filled with blood.
Draco groaned and clutched his head. Hermione found her voice and muttered his name over and over. She sank to her knees beside him just as he sat up.
"I'm alright, Hermione, please don't," said Draco as she started to fuss over the blood.
"I have to.... or else.... Oh, Draco," tears streamed down her eyes but she grabbed her wand and magicked a few things from the cupboard.
She wrapped a bandage around his head and cleaned the blood on his face. Thankfully, he wasn't hurt anywhere else.
"I'm sorry, Hermione," muttered Draco as she fixed his bandage, "No leave it and just look at me."
Hermione hands found Draco's and she sat beside him. Her eyes bore into his and somewhere t the back of her mind she wondered what bet they were talking about. She didn't wonder for long as Draco's lips clasped on her own. Draco pulled her closer and Hermione pulled away slowly, aware of Harry in the room.
"You know what. I'm getting your father in Azkaban and then-" said Harry.
"We're leaving," said Hermione, she got up and pulled Draco with her, "We are leaving right now. Harry, you need to capture Lucius Malfoy. Draco knows where they are. He'll send you the address. We have to go..."
"Hermione... You can't leave with him," muttered Harry and banged his fist on the table. Draco grabbed Hermione's waist tighter as she jumped, "You're supposed to be mine! Ron-"
"Ron will be happy with whoever I choose. Draco loves me and-"
"What about me? I love you so much, Hermione," said Harry, coming closer to her. Hermione glanced at Draco as he made to shove him away, "Just think about it. You and me... We'll be happy. I'll give you anything you want."
"If you want me to be happy, you have to let me go with Draco," said Hermione, she let go of Draco and caught both of Harry's hand in her's, "I love you too but not in the way you want me to."
She leaned in and felt Dravo draw closer as she pecked Harry on the cheek. Harry sighed and thought for a whole minute before stepping up to Draco.
"You hurt her and I'll be the first one to have my wand on your throat," said Harry.
"I won't hurt her," stated Draco.
"You better not," muttered Harry and looked back to Hermione, "Take care, Hermione."
"You too Harry," muttered Hermione.
Hermione grabbed Draco's hand and after looked at the Weasley house where she missed when Ron was still walking about, muttering about how hungry he was. But that was over now, she thought as she disapparated with Draco.
