2

While in math class, all the students are getting a fresh start on homework. I start to get a horrible headache, so decide to walk over to the pencil sharpener to sharpen my pencil and let my brain take a break from working. I stand up from my chair, and already feel the stares on me.

I look around, locking eyes with everyone. Lauren. Chelsea. Rowen. Lukas. And Dylan. I glare at Dylan, and he glares back at me. As I turn back around to sharpen my pencil, I remember the events on the bus. I growl under my breath. Dylan annoys the heck out of me! I mean, who does he think he is? The king?

I take a deep breath, and sharpen my pencil. Thinking bad things about Dylan won't help him learn to be nice. He'll just keep making fun of people whether I think rudely about him or not.

As I make my way back to my seat, Chelsea walks over to me with a smirk and coffee in her hand. I smile at her, and almost reach my seat before she "accidentally" spills her drink all over my shirt.

I gasp.

Chelsea acts like it was an accident, saying, "Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry! Let me help you!" She takes a tissue from the tissue box on the teachers desk and starts patting my shirt, annoyingly. She smirks at me. I glare, and fake smile.

"Oh, don't worry about it! I'll take care of it." I say, faking that I don't care that she purposely spilt her coffee all over my shirt. Turning around, I ask the teacher, "Excuse me? May I please go to the office and pick up a new shirt?" The teacher nods, and writes me a slip.

Everyone in the class laughs as I walk out the door. I don't make eye contact with anybody this time. Just head straight to the office.

The office staff was so helpful, and and allowed me to use a school shirt for free. The only size they had was 2 sizes too big for me, but I had to make it work. I tucked it into my shorts, but I couldn't do anything about the gigantic sleeves.

Looking at the clock, I realize how late it is. I only have a minute to make it to my class, and its three hallways away!

Before I can think of anything else, I start sprinting to my classroom. Just to my luck, I make it to my class, but the door closes before I can reach it.

I sigh, and blame it all on Chelsea. Her and Dylan are tag-teamers. Best friends since elementary school, and have been causing trouble since they were in diapers.

The campus security guard comes through the hallway, and pulls me by my arm, and gives me a detention pass for this afternoon for being tardy. Then, he unlocks the door and I nervously take a seat in Chemistry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After school, I go straight to detention, even though I have an urging feeling to just run away from the school. But, then I think of how much trouble I would be in with my parents.

I sit in the left back corner chair, and set my books and notebooks on my desk. The least I'm seen by friends and enemies, the better. I don't want anyone to know I'm where all the jerks go.

As if matters couldn't get any worse, a boy I know walks in. Dylan O'Brien. He glares at me, as the security guard assigns him to the seat next to mine.

Dylan sits down into his chair, and starts taking his books out. I try to ignore him, and just get my detention period over with, until he whispers to me, "I never thought I'd see you here. What'd you do?"

I ignore him, but then he kicks my desk, causing my pencil to write a line on my paper. Turning to face him, I whisper, "What do you want?"

"I just asked what your in here for?" Dylan responds.

I look over at the security guard and then back at Dylan. Thank goodness he hasn't heard him talking yet. "Do you really need to know everything?"I turn back to my paper. Then, I'm intrigued about what he's in here for, but don't wanna share about me. "What are you in here for, though?"

Dylan lightly giggles, and says, "So you won't tell me about what happened to you, but you want to hear from me? Sly move." He leans back into his chair.

I growl, but then lean over and tell him, "I was late for Chemistry. Because your silly little BFF 'accidentally' spilt her coffee on me and I had to go to the office, causing me to be late for class. Now, tell me about your incident."

He leans over as well, and whispers, "I copied off someones test."

The guard looks over at the two of us, "Hey! You two, no talking!" Dylan and I both lean back into our chairs.

I whisper to Dylan, "So, a maker-funner of people and a cheater on tests. I always knew they went together." I smile, working on my work.

"Girl, it's not like that. I just don't have time to study, like you, alright?" Dylan says. He works on his homework as well, with no expression on his face.

"Alright. Whatever you say."

For the next hour of detention, we ignore each other and work on homework. Then, the wall phone in the room rings. The guard goes to answer it.

"Hello. Mr. Weller speaking." He pauses. Then continues, "Mhm. Okay. I'll call her over."

I look up from my work, to see the guard calling me over with his eyes and pointer finger. I have a pit in my stomach as I walk over to the phone.

I grab it from him, talking into it. "Hello, this is Maeve."

The office worker talks back to me, "Hello Maeve! My mom wanted to let you know that she won't be at home when you arrive. She needed to take your dad to the hospital."

A lump grows in my throat. "What? D-d-did she tell you why?" I stutter

The lady says calmy, "She said that your dad was having an Asthma attack, and pain in his chest so took him to the hospital for precautions. She let me know that she'll call and text you after school. Is that alright?"

"Yeah." I manage to get out. "Thank you. Goodbye." I hang up the phone, and silently make my way to the seat.

Everyone in detentions eyes are focused on me.

"What happened?" Dylan asks me

"Nothing. It's fine. It's gonna be fine." I tell him, trying to convince myself that my dad will be fine. Even though, deep down, I know it's unusual.
