Chapter 2

-Hey guys! I just changed Mr. Hazel's name (who you'll be meeting in this chapter) to Mr. Ray, so don't get confused :) Hope you enjoy <3

Science has proved that there is a strong sense of survival present in human beings. They are able to fight against situations better than other organisms, providing a reason why they have survived over the course of centuries, maintaining their top position among all organisms. This very sense of survival was what was required during school. To pass six hours at school was like passing 6 days in the world outside. The only moment that time seemed to be in a hurry, was during the surprise class tests. Otherwise, time was an irritating lazy rogue

Fortunately, both Alex and Edward were able to survive most of the day. They got through all science subjects, economics and most languages. The last of all the classes was English literature, which was most interesting for Alex, taught virtually by the most uninteresting person on planet earth. Mr. Ray. A plump fellow in his mid fifties. He always wore the same white check-shirt with grey pants and a brown belt which seemed to hold his over-flowing tummy in place.

Alex found himself in a square room with whitewashed walls. Dark brown wooden benches were lined on one side, with a white board on the opposite wall. If study was boring, they made sure that classrooms were even more.

The most frequently used word by Mr. Ray was "dear". He would refer to each and every student with that same word. Names were just a waste of time and human memory. To him, "You dear! Yes you" was all that he needed to refer to any student in his class, and you'd pray that the dear in this case wasn't you.

Him being boring and too conventional was one problem, the real hurdle of getting through the 40 minute lecture was the absence of Edward. For some reason, Edward did not have English literature class with Alex. They had to go to separate rooms, and were taught by separate teachers. Why? That even they weren't able to figure out.

"You dear!" Mr. Ray exclaimed.

Silence overtook the environment. Every student in the class prayed to get minimum attention from Mr. Ray. Alex had his eyes fixed to the desk.

"Yes you! Right in the back with silky golden hair which makes you look like a baby."

Alex looked up from the table. A dreadful expression cast over his face. His lips were forming the letter O.

"Y..yes sir!" Alex managed.

"Abstract nouns. Define them." Mr. Ray asserted, pushing his glasses up his nose with his index finger.

"They are.....nouns..."

Mr. Ray's round face started changing colours dramatically.

"You dear! Have a marvelous brain you know that? A brain so wondrous, that it has never been used." Mr. Ray taunted. Alex heard a couple of giggles. Mr. Hazel did that a lot, you'd sometimes feel as if he enjoys making fun of his students and is in constant search of opportunities to do so.

"Sir! I was..I was absent yesterday." Alex tried to reason.

"Ah! Well that's my fault." A sarcastic expression like this generally meant for the student to shut up and take his seat, so Alex did exactly that.

"So students, is there any volunteer or shall I use my liberty to choose among you?"

The atmosphere became thick. You'd feel that Mr. Hazel had sucked all the oxygen out of the room. Everyone, with exasperated expressions on their faces, bowed their head down and stared at the tables. Horror. That was the exact description. Horror of being the next "dear".

Alex managed a little peek up from his desk and thought that he saw a raised hand. No. That wasn't possible. Who would push themselves in hell. Who'd volunteer for hell.

"Ah yes! You dear with the pretty hazel hair. Haven't seen you here before."

"Sir it's my first day here. I am a new admission."

Her voice. It had something in it. It was so sweet and attractive, it made Alex want to look up from his desk and see the person that possessed such a magical voice. That voice, not too feminine, nor masculine. A sweet touch in between. A touch of excellence.

Finally Alex lost all self control and looked up. There she was! Two rows in front. Dressed in blue with soft hazel hair curled up into a bun. It made Alex remember her mother. The photographs that he had seen, her mother had hazel hair as well. But he didn't continue thinking about that. This girl in the front, all of Alex's focus was directed to her. Her height seemed slightly towards the shorter side. Her hands were clasped together in her lap.

She is beautiful!

Alex felt strangely attracted to that girl.

"Oh I see. So dear, explain abstract nouns please."

"Abstract nouns are nouns that denote an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object. For example, 'That boy is truthful.' In the given example, truthful is an abstract noun. "

"Well done dear! What's your name?"

WHAT? Was Mr. Ray asking a student's name? This can't be.

"Violet Brown."

"Pleasure to meet you Violet! I hope that your presence in this class makes a few very inconsiderate fellows of yours feel a little more considerate regarding this class."

Mr. Ray's eyes shot straight at Alex, piercing through all the rows in between. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that this was referred to none other than him. Alex lowered his gaze back towards his desk.

The bell rang. The pleasant sound of it, providing oxygen to all the human beings around. You could almost hear everyone sigh with relief. Usually Alex fled the classroom and walked out into the brightly lit hallway. It had blue lockers adjacent to the off white walls on both sides. Alex would walk straight to Edward's locker. Locker Number 2245 to be exact. The locker on the right side of Edward's, number 2246, had been in no particular students' use since ages. So Alex used to stand there and wait for Edward. But not today! He was determined to talk to that girl. What was her name? Viola? No! It was something like a colour.

VIOLET

Yes, Violet. He had to talk to her.

He looked at her, sitting on the wooden class bench as she gracefully packed her backpack. Her slim fingers swiftly moving over the books, placing them in order and stashing them in her bag. A light blue one, matching her dress and reflecting her peaceful personality. She didn't look to be in a hurry and so did Alex. Watching her felt nice.

Why am I feeling so desperate?

She stood up as she hung the bag behind her shoulders and their eyes locked. He must've got her. MUST'VE. He always had that effect on girls. They loved his appearance. His golden silky hair were enough, but as their eyes laid upon his muscular body, that used to be it. Game over. Case closed. Another girl down.

But she dismissed his gaze as if it didn't mean anything to her. It made Alex break inside. He felt as if his heart was sinking with thousands of untold stories, with millions of un-felt emotions. What was this? How could she....

Come one tiger! Let's do this. You've got to. She's special. Go talk to her. Yes. Talk to her.

Violet walked towards the door which was behind Alex, as he blocked her way.

"Hey! Nice work there, those abstract nouns. Nice! I am...impressed." Alex gave that I-am-flirting-with-you-so-you-better-love-it smile of his. He did look attractive. Many times had girls tried to unlock that beautiful smile that was playing on his thin lips right now, but rarely did anyone succeed.

"Uhh okay!" Violet replied, almost as if she was dismissing the fact that a cute guy had just tried to flirt with her.

She walked round him and left. Alex broke further. A million pieces inside. His heart went racing as something struck his mind.

Her face, it was nothing special, yet it was so beautiful. A soft face with minimum make-up and attractive hazel eyes that matched her hair colour. She looked so simple yet attractive. He was lost in her eyes. The depth of them. They seemed unending, as if pulling Alex into a void of emotions and making him fall into emptiness. The beauty in that girl, was that she didn't seem as if trying to look beautiful. She just was. She had a small nose that looked a little out of place considering her huge pretty eyes, but she seemed to embrace her imperfections. Her simplicity made her attractive.

The arrogant side of Alex wanted to give up, yet the newly found desperate side of his wanted that girl more than everything. What to do?

EDWARD!

Yes Edward! He'll know what to do. And so he rushed towards the hallway and headed to Edward's locker.

No! This couldn't be.

Violet was standing in front of the abandoned locker where Alex used to stand and chat with Edward. She was putting a few books in the locker while two sharply dressed girls with make-up all over their faces stood beside her. Alex realized that out of all the people that she could have had a locker beside, luck had chosen Edward for that reason. He was jealous. But before he could think further, Edward emerged from the other side of the hallway and approached his locker. As was his nature, he checked out Violet who had no idea of the latest proceedings.

Oh no you don't! Not with her. Stay away from her you... keep your eyes off of her you stupid little rat.

Why was he feeling so possessive about a person that he hasn't even met yet? Nonetheless, it was done, decided, destined for Edward to face the wrath of Alex, but Alex needed his help first. He needed to talk to Violet again. He knew he could, he just didn't know what to talk about.

Alex walked calmly towards his own locker on the opposite wall, with one hand tucked in his front pocket. He was trying to look cool, but was failing miserably. Even if you were a mile away, you could see the unease in his gait. Alex, the guy that every girl wanted, was finally feeling conscious about his own self.

"Pssst! Hey! Edward!", Alex whispered with one hand cupped around his mouth, as he tried to get Edward's attention.

Edward looked back at Alex in a peculiar way. He raised one eyebrow and walked towards him.

"What in the name of God has happened to you? You look as if you just saw yourself in the mirror." Edward tried to be his usual sarcastic self.

"Cut the crap! You see that girl standing in front of our spot."

"Yeah that new chick? What about her?"

Anger seemed to rise in Alex's chest.

"Okay for starters, STOP CALLING HER A CHICK."

"Woah oh oh oh oh! Is someone possessive or what?"

"Shut up. I just...wanna talk to her."

"Ladies and gentlemen! I proudly announce that our little cool boy Alex has started takin' the diggin' for-"

Alex quickly put his hand over Edwards mouth as Edward started creating muffled sounds against Alex's hand. A few faces turned to stare at them with wild expressions cast upon them. Alex and Edward looked strange. A tall well built guy with his hand over the mouth of a short plump fellow. It looked as if Alex was trying to kidnap Edward.

Alex smiled nervously back at them. It took a few moments for people to ignore them and continue their work.

"What the hell man!" Alex whispered in Edward's ear.

Edward pulled Alex away and continued.

"Come on! You' the tiger. Go talk to her. Come on you know you can do it. I know you can do it."

"I dont know. I just don't know what to say." Alex confessed.

"You know what? Just do it."

Before Alex could say anything, Edward launched his body backwards, pushing Alex towards Violet as hard as he could.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO I AM NOT READYYYYYY!!!

His plump body against Alex's tall and muscular one. Alex's sneakers screeched against the floor tiles.

With one last push Alex was forced to face Violet.

There she was again. Right in front of her. Her soft face, soft eyes, soft hair. Everything about her was so soft. She made Alex's heart beat at an insane rate, a feeling that Alex had never had. For the first time in forever, Alex felt his hands shaking, as well as his voice.

"H..ey! Uhh it's you again. What a...a..surprise." He laughed.

What are you doing idiot, girls don't like it when you laugh at your own jokes.

"Um I was...just..wondering if you'd like to..you know..meet me later or something?"

Violet looked down at her feet. For a moment all Alex could see was her head bowed down in front of her, as if accepting defeat. What was she doing? Did she not want to meet his eye? Was she nervous?

And with that, she walked round Alex and away. It felt as if Alex's heart had stop beating. It was a tragedy within a day. This girl had just come and destroyed Alex's inner peace. His eyes were fixed at Violet as she walked away with such grace. It was then that Alex realized how, for the first time in his life, he wanted something that he seemed unable to get.

The two girls left behind tried to test their luck.

"Hey Alex! Nice game yesterday" one said. She was referring to the basketball match. His school team was one of the finest, and he was their captain.

That sentence unlocked something in Alex. It looked as if Alex had been possessed by a spirit. His eyes seemed to ignite. He walked purposefully towards that end of the hallway where Violet had headed. He took the first right. As he opened the door, he was led to a staircase with grey marble stairs and whitewashed walls. He ascended and was led to another door. He opened it and found himself in a corridor. He walked down the corridor and stood in front of the door on the left. A sign hung on it which read "Basketball court". He turned the doorknob and entered.
