Family Isn't Everything.

Disclaimer: I don't own Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers. (Disney). I don't own the picture (neither the cover).

(I made this more realistic than necessary lol. Ain't a Disney scenario this time.)

(Hope you enjoy.)

What had Dale been expecting from him? A smile? A cheerful hello? A response to the sudden hug as someone's arms wrapped around his smaller frame. Dale always proved the tallest of the two even if he was considered to be the younger sibling.

"You look... different."

He ignored Monterey's confused stare as Dale released Chip from the constricting hug he found himself in after the other chipmunk unceremoniously busted into his apartment.

"It's no secret I got the CGI surgery!" He seemed oddly...chipper, pun intended. "I...Anyway, Chip, this isn't exactly a planned reunion. The team's gonna have to-"

A ringing sensation blocked Dale's next sentence. Chip's vision blurred somewhat seeing his standing brother as he didn't leave, abandoned him to the streets and only recovering after their parents' trust fun kicked as they turned twenty one.

After the cancellation, they all changed in more ways than one. Dale and Monterey's more physical than internal.

They've changed. I've changed...

Chip changed so much. Guarding his emotions and never wanting be hurt again. Swearing vengeance on his brother should he dare to ever return. He took and took whilst Chip gave and gave until he had nothing. Dale stole everything away from him.

Unconsciously Chip's hand reached to his new iPhone the modern world provided, bringing up the contacts and texting the one he named Security.

Intruder in my apartment. Please remove him immediately.

A quick text back.

Okay, sir. Remember to have your weapon and hide if necessary. Don't attack unless absolutely needed or the press will accuse of injury and assault.

Unfortunately true. Chip would give them that one. The paparazzi took anything anyone tipped about a celebrity and went crazy with the information they received-

"Chip!"

Someone snatched his phone. Dale stared at the foreign object. Unfortunate for Chip that his brother had the ability to reach text messages. Eyes shining with both betrayal and confusion, he slowly raised his head toward his brother (ex brothers, they weren't related anymore).

"You're an intruder." Chip sounded emotionless. "And you need to be escorted off the premises or I will cause the police."

Dale wondered why the tables turned. A few moments ago his brother seemed willing to listen to his little speech about them all reuniting, but the walls building and the pure darkness shining within Chip's eyes changed his perspective. The rage and built up emotions were taking over and he couldn't do a thing to stop them.

"Lad..." Monterey breathed. "It's yer brother. I lost myself to the cheese, but you've been given another chance. Do not be foolish in giving it up so soon."

Chip wanted to trust his little brother. They were family. Family was supposed to assist one another in dire situations such as this and then another in the future if need be.

"Chip. You can trust me." CGI'd or not, Dale expressed his emotions not problem. "I need you help. Your the only one I can trust apart from the others. Please, Chip, I need you."

Dale pulled him in for another hug. Always overly affectionate. Laying there limp as a rag doll, Chip forced himself not to return the gesture despite wanting nothing more than to trust and even learn to love again.

He just...can't.

Chip's chest stung with an emotion he was all too associated with. Abandonment. Regret. Anger. Resentment. Love. Rage. Sadness. Emptiness.

"I..I can't. I'm sorry, Dale. You need to leave." Chip backed away, then moved his down downcast as tears entered his eyes, threatening to make him weak. "Monterey, you look like crap. Find a guest room. You can stay for the night. But, Dale, you need to leave. I don't need you anymore. You don't get to demand from me. Not anymore after leaving me to the streets. Running away for your own benefit-"

Stopping himself before speaking out of line, the street rat within the chipmunk froze his words. He let out more than he can chew. Or for Dale and Monterey to process. Where the hell was his security?

Chip cried his tears all those years ago. There weren't any left to cry. A cold part of him, the business as he called it, whispered to get his brother the hell out of here. He didn't deserve Chip's attention after leaving leaving him for prey and adding he'd be alright alone.

Anxietyallalonetrustingnoonealwaysafraid-

The emotions wailed inside like a tornado, refusing to be denied their existence. Tears threatened to escape Chip's eyes as he turned his back to Dale and Monterey.

Remain strong.

Another part of him. Childish instinct screamed, begged, shrieked not to let their brother go after it had been so long. Seeing them broke down the walls Chip worked so hard to build so he would not be hurt like in the past.

"Just. Get. Out."

Even not speaking, Dale remained a nuisance.

"No. I'm not leaving again."

As if only realising the damage he caused, Dale reached out and put a hand on his shoulder-

"HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD!"

At least attempted. Someone kicked the back of Dale's knees and forced him in the ground with his hands behind his hand and avoiding eye contact to not seem suspicious.

"He can stay."

Chip needed to the officer in confirmation before they released Monterey. The rat scurried off to another room. Probably mumbling about Chip's cheese in the fridge and secretly wanting to have a bite.

That made him smile a bit.

"Please take the other one off my property."

A malicious part of Chip clapped for his deed against his brother. Little vengeance for abandoning him all those years prior. Escorting him out the apartment, Dale's emotions were all over the place.

Understanding. Insecure. Love. Hate. Betrayal. Fear. Anger. Confusion.

Why? Why wouldn't Chip communicate?

Perhaps it's easier this way.

Chip looked down through his balcony as Dale was taken into a mini police car suited to their size. In the modern world, the human Goverment needed to expand their horizons to give Toons jobs if they weren't to be accused of Racism and the cause of poverty within their population.

He felt somewhat remorseful for his actions against getting Dale arrested. Seeing him being sat in the car only enhanced the cold emotions demanding justice for what happened in the past.

Dale stared with a blank gaze. Masking his emotions just like Chip taught him. Feeling somewhat proud, Chip stared back as a little mercy giving instead of completely throwing away his humanity.

His brother mouthed one word.

"Why?"

Chip only smiled in return. Heading back inside, passing a disappointment Monterery in the halls, he paused momentarily to challenge the unsaid accusation.

"You left as well."

That made his resume fizzle. Opening the door to his room, Chip slammed it shut before collapsing on his bed, finally giving into the sadness and unleashing the wave with tears streaming down his eyes and heart clenching seeing the ones who abandoned him leave again and addicted to something they were once in the past.

Why did you have to come back?
