1: Next to Him (Prologue Part 1)
~1 Day before Qimir disappears~
Deactivating my lightsaber I reattach it to my hip and try to steady my breathing, trying not to sound out of breath as if the lesson didn't take a lot of energy out of me. Energy I would have to focus if I hadn't spent the previous night up late with Qimir. I should be used to getting what feels like less and less sleep, but it was worth it. At least outside the training room and getting my ass handed to me it was.
"You're so tense." Qimir comes up alongside me as we both exit into the busy hallway of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. "I could feel you from across the room."
"Well if someone wouldn't keep me up late, then maybe I would be better rested." I counter.
"It takes two to have a conversation."
"So what do you call it when-"
"Padawan." My master interrupts.
"Greetings Master Dawntuli."
She nods at you both with a solemn face. "I heard you were distracted today, lagging if you will."
"It won't happen again." Your cheeks glow with a hint of shame. "Sorry Master."
"A rested mind and body, is the best kind to train with." Her eyes stray from yours to Qimir's. "Good luck on your mission, Padawan." She turns and joins another Jedi, disappearing together into the crowded hallway.
Air fills my chest as I take in a lungful, trying to swallow the shame. Attachments are forbidden. Forming such a bond can lead to the kind of feelings that make one vulnerable to losing their way. My Master's voice echoes inside my head.
"Come on Y/N." Qimir nudges me with his shoulder bringing my static feet to life. The silence is heavy between you both as you return to Padawan housing. I want to know what mission he is going away on, when he found out, and why hasn't he told me. Clearing my throat I hope he brings up the topic. However, he either doesn't take the hint or refuses to address what my master said. "Will I see you tonight?" He stops short, but his hands rests lightly on my wrist which I don't pull away.
Halting with him, indulging in the temporary spark of his touch,... but the internal battle begins to sizzle inside. "Depends... when do you leave on your mission?"
"Tomorrow... I was going to tell you tonight." He says removing his hand from your wrist. A simple touch, that could be meaningless, but isn't to you, leaves your wrist suddenly cold. Turning to face him, I can't help, but notice his eyes dart away, refusing to meet my gaze. If only I could read his mind, maybe he wouldn't be just a mystery. "I have to go, but I do want to see you tonight." He says, staring at his feet, but I can feel his aura changing to a blocked defensiveness.
"Then I shall be there." I say and a small smile surfaces on his face that I match.
~The Night before Qimir disappears~
The landing pad is quiet and vacate, as Coruscant night life begins to become a buzz down below and speeders fly past, each adding their own humming to the white noise of traffic. So busy, yet the noise is faint, as you are alone with your thoughts.
"Peaceful, isn't it?" Qimir makes his presence known.
"It's wonderful." I look to him from the cargo I sit on. "It's strange to be still in the middle of chaos, but refreshing."
"Divided madness, each being with a different task leading their way." He takes a seat next to me. "Never knowing if you'll cross paths with the same being again."
"Qimir, how long will you be gone on your mission?"
"According to Master Vernestra, a couple days."
I hit his shoulder, "then why make it sound like you're going away?" My voice raises, but the smile in tone gives away my relief.
"So you'd miss me." He smirks and leans back, propping himself up on his elbows.
"Kriff." I shake my head, bringing my knees to my chest. "What's the mission?"
"Simple recon, nothing exciting."
"Lack of excitement, does not mean unimportant."
"True." He cocks his head to the side. "I wish I could capture the hum of the city. How everything blends together and becomes soooo... quiet."
I close my eyes, sensing the rise and fall of his chest, matching my breathe to his, as we sit in the stillness together. "Imagine if we could recreate this sound."
"Imagine if we could create silence."
I open my eyes and lean back next to him. "Create silence? Doesn't creating something defeat the purpose of the silence? Each movement makes noise."
"Each movement moves with the force. Imagine what it'd be like to be alone in silence, just you and the force... truly trusting the force to guide you."
The silence wraps us both in comfort. Just the two of us, alone together. "Theoretically, a helmet made completely out of Cortosis, could do the trick."
"What?" He faces his body to me. "Just a simple helmet? Why wouldn't the Jedi use it to train us then?"
"Well they only have very few. We used them sparingly as younglings. Probably because it's hard to mine."
"The Jedi have how many resources and can't get their hands on mined materials?" He cocks an eyebrow.
"I'm not in charge."
"Maybe one day when we are Jedi Masters we can make the changes we want." He sighs.
"I don't even know what I want."
"A helmet is a good start."
I cock my head, twisting my neck to side eye him, and am greeted by his mischievous smile. I roll my eyes. "You're dumb, but I'll miss you anyways."
"I'll miss you too Y/N." A new softness sparks in his eyes. I turn away before my emotions can surface. Swallowing them has always been hard, but thankfully Qimir never notices the struggle. I close my eyes and focus on sensing my surroundings, wanting this moment to last forever, wanting this feeling to never leave. "What are you doing?"
"Sensing my surroundings."
"Why?" A speeder flying faster than most approaches and passes, sending a quick sweeping breeze across the platform.
"I want to remember this night."
"Why?" He repeats.
"I want to capture the hum of the planet, the feel of y-" His hand brushes a loose strand of hair from my face taking me off guard. I look at him wondering what's going through his mind.
"Continue. The feel of?" His eyes captivate me, drawing me in.
"You." The word escapes, before I can sensor myself. "Your force signature!" I fumble out and look away. "Your force signature, here next to me." I try to say more calmly.
"Well I hope it's beside you." He smiles and directs your chin to face him. "Never forget my force signature and I shall never leave you."
