Two Boys and the Girl that Loved Roller Coasters (very long)
A better trio had never been seen before. At least that's what they were in their minds. The mischievous one who new how to have fun in any situation. The nerdy inventor who only wanted to explore the world. And the fearless one who seemed to have popped out of a fairytale.
Jack Overland, Hiccup Haddock, and Anna Arens have been best friends since they were 7. It all started on the day Jack, let both the class frog and the class rabbit out of their cages.
When the teacher left to get a new dry-erase marker. He gave the frog to A girl with strawberry blonde pigtail braids, a gap in her two front teeth, and a bandaid over her left cheek. Which she scraped only yesterday. She just happened to be standing next to him at the time.
Thinking the girl next to him would scream, he shoved the frog in her hands.
"Hold this" the spiky haired brunette said.
"Cool!" She beamed.
She gently pulled at one of its hind legs and stroked its head as Jack got out the rabbit. Careful not to let the rabbit scratch and rip his last pair of un-ruined kakis his mother warned him not to mess up, but still getting his royal blue shirt covered with hair.
Anna attempted to put the frog into the pocket of her green bib overall shorts. Instead, the frog hopped out of Anna's hands and into a book another brunette with shaggy hair and black glasses was reading.
"Hey!" He exclaimed as Anna dove after the Frog.
"Don't hurt it!" Hiccup shouted at her. As he dropped his book and they ran after the frog.
Jack becoming totally disinterested in the rabbit let him go and ran off towards the other two.
As the frog hopped from desk to desk. Little girls screamed and the little boys laughed, some tried to catch the rabbit. Some of the boys chanted at the frog "kill it! Kill it!"
Anna, Jack, and Hiccup finally cornered the frog. Jack dove first but tripped on his untied shoelaces. The frog slipped right through his fingers and Jack landed on his back. Anna managed to scoop the thing up mid air but tripped backwards while twisting around to catch her balance, landing sideways on Jack. Anna sent the frog flying when she tripped. Hiccup tripped over both of them trying to catch the frog. Which he did but landed on Anna in the process.
"Gotcha" he prided while still in a dog pile with the other two.
"JACK OVERLAND, ANNA ARENS, HICCUP HADDOCK! YOU WILL PUT THE ANIMALS AWAY AND YOU WILL MARCH YOURSELVES TO THE PRINCIPALS OFFICE RIGHT NOW!" Mrs. Jensen yelled.
The other boys had already caught the rabbit so Hiccup just put the frog back it's terrarium. Then all three of them walked through the halls to the front office. Jack bumped Hiccup who then bumped Anna.
"Hey!" She gasped
"Sorry" they both mumbled.
The silence was only broken when Hiccup started to snigger. Then Anna, then Jack.
"Did you see the way you looked as you jumped on Hiccup's desk?" Jack laughed at Anna.
"It was funny how you just let go of the the bunny" Hiccup giggled at Jack.
"That frog flew so high!" Anna snorts "that was a awesome catch!" Referring to Hiccup.
"I wasn't gonna kill the frog I only wanted to gross out the girls." Jack confessed.
"I didn't think it was gross. But I wasn't gonna kill it neither. I just liked how slimy it was." Anna stated.
"It's not slime. It's mucus." Hiccup clarified.
"What's that?" Jack asked.
"Dad says its boogers." Hiccup said sheepishly.
"I touched frog boogers?" Anna asked dumbfounded.
"Yeah it got all over my sleeves." Hiccup expresses showing the other two the slime on his long sleeve green shirt.
"Imagine being covered in your own boogers all the time like the frog." Jack marveled.
"Ewwwwww" they all cringed.
"Coooooool" they all coursed.
They giggled their way down to the office, and the rest was history.
Of course that was many years ago. But they've been inseparable ever since. They've all grown now. All of them 18 or 19. Anna no longer has the gap in her teeth, Jacks hair turned white due to a disorder. Hiccup still has his glasses, but got in a car accident, lost his left leg and now wears a prosthetic.
The trio went to an amusement park this day, they all loved the trill of the rides.
They'd all just got off the swing ride Anna spinning in circles. Arms outstretched.
"Many. The much. Spinning!" She gasped still spinning. Her hair had two low pigtails at the back of her head that were flying everywhere while she was spinning. A braid held the rest of her hair in a crown at the top of her head and her bangs let loose.
Jack chuckled and bumped her into Hiccup nearly nocking off his glasses.
"Oops sorry Hiccup." Anna said as she readjusted his glasses on his head. He straightened his green sweater with a night fury insignia on the front and a red viking skull&helmet on his right shoulder.
"No worries" he replied.
Just then Anna's phone chimed, she pulled her phone out of the back pocket of her jean shorts. It was her boyfriend Kristoff.
"Oh guys Kristoff is here I'm gonna go get him." She said walking off. "Meet you by the bumper cars!" She called waving at the two.
When she finally disappeared in the crowd, the boys looked at each other knowing full well what the other was thinking.
"Go time." They said in unison. And walked off towards the bumper cars.
Sure Kristoff was a nice guy and all but the boys noticed a few things. Anna had been becoming less of herself since she started dating him. She was no longer as reckless or as free spirited as she used to be. All the things that made her herself were becoming dull. Which made her feel dull. Which is why the boys brought her to the amusement park. Anna was fearless and lived for adventure, childlike at times. What better way to bring that out than at an amusement park?
The boys loved those types of things too. Adventure, being reckless, spontaneity, that's what made their trio fantastic in their opinion. Kristoff was more of a type to settle down early and live a quite life. All the things Anna wasn't.
"Why'd we even let her invite him?" Jack whined ruffling his white spiky hair.
"Because we want her to feel supported. And this is the perfect place for her to see that Kristoff is... how to put this lightly... to slow for Anna." Hiccup explained. Walking briskly through the crowds turning back to Jack every once in a while to gesture with his hands.
"How would you put it not nicely?" Jack chuckled dodging people trying to keep up with the determined brunette.
Hiccup stopped and turned to face Jack. Jack nearly bumped into him
"Kristoff is literally destroying our Anna. At a very slow pace." Hiccup stated as a matter of factly.
"Geez dude!" Jack exclaimed.
"Well it's not like he means to, he's a nice guy." Hiccup started walking again.
"He's just not right for her." Jack finished.
"Exactly." Hiccup declared.
"So what's the plan Chief?" Jack teased catching up to Hiccups side.
Hiccup slid into a bench while Jack leaped up and over onto to the bench to sit with him.
"Well Frost were gonna take her on all her favorite rides. If it spins, goes fast, loop-da-loops, we're on it!" Hiccup replied to Jack making gestures while doing so.
"Anna said she hasn't been feeling herself lately. And she's right. I can't remember the last time she climbed a tree or wanted to go on a random adventure. We gotta make her feel adrenaline again." Jack urged.
They both got up moving again towards the bumper cars. Hiccup walking backwards and Jacks hands on Hiccups shoulders making sure he's going in the right direction. Which they've done a million times before and starting to become a habit for the two.
"Kristoff hates all of that except for the fast part. So, absolutely no Ferris wheel, no tunnel of love, No games to win prizes at, no hall of mirrors." Hiccup counted off rides on his fingers. "At least not until they break up. I know how you idiots like to make funny faces in the mirrors." Hiccup emphasized seeing Jack wanting to protest. "Once she realizes she needs someone who can keep up with her she'll break it off."
"And if she doesn't." Jack started with a worried tone. They both stopped walking and paused. Jack looked at Hiccup and they both nodded. "We push him until he makes her choose him or us." He finished.
"Let's hope it's not the latter" Hiccup sighed.
Anna would never choose a guy over her two best friends. And that was true. She wouldn't choose any guy, no matter how perfect for her he was, never over her friends who had been by her side through everything. They were too close to even let romantic interests get in their way. They just dont want her to feel betrayed afterwards.
Anna and Kristoff were already in line for bumper cars and she waved them over. As the boys joined them Anna was bouncing in her black converse.
"Ooh I'm so excited. I haven't done this in forever!" she beamed.
"Isn't this... well... I don't know... childish?" Kristoff questioned.
Jack and Anna dramatically gasped while Hiccup merely chuckled. Anna smiles warmly at a slightly confused Kristoff.
"It's more nostalgic than anything, plus it will get us ready for the real rides!" She shouted and the trio did a tri-way high five that they perfected over the years. Kristoff gulped.
Bumper cars was tame Jack ran into everyone he saw. Hiccup avoided getting hit and made screeching car noises that made Everyone laugh. Kristoff only followed Anna and bumped her when he could.
When the ride ended stuff didn't sit right with Anna. She wanted to be chased by Kristoff but she also wanted him to have fun on his own. Not follow her around like a dog. It was almost as if he was bored here. The boys sensed the tension and gave each other knowing looks. Their plan was in motion.
"Where to next Anna?" Jack asked, both boys running up behind Anna and her boyfriend.
Anna thought for a moment. And a wicked grin spread across her face.
"We know that look." The three boys said in unison.
"North's sleigh ride." She declared.
"Yes my favorite!" Jack exclaimed.
"Cmon lets go!" Hiccup urged pushing Kristoff who seemed less than thrilled about it.
They walked into the line. Anna seemed Giddy with excitement.
"I just love the loop-da-loops!" She gushed.
"Especially when you go no hands" Jack continued. " I remember once when I went with Bunny he thought I was gonna fall out."
Bunny was an upper classman but once the school had a ditch day and everyone went to the amusement park.
"I remember he almost threw up once he got off." Hiccup commented.
"Are you guys sure about this?" Kristoff babbled. "I mean this ride is so rickety and old. Jacks not even wearing closed shoes."
Anna looked sympathetic towards him and started to move out of the line. But Jack was too quick.
"No it's totally safe. Come on Kristoff I thought you liked fast rides." The boy challenged the other. "And my Birkenstock's are not coming off my feet." Jack smirked. Holding a foot up and pointing to it.
Jack seemed as though he hated any kind of shoe. He would rather go everywhere barefoot. Hiccup had to convince him that they wouldn't allow him to go on any rides without shoes.
"I like fast!" Kristoff defend himself. "It's. Just the... loops that I'm not keen on."
"I'll be right next to you sweetheart." Anna said tenderly intertwining her fingers with Kristoff.
Jack nearly gagged, Hiccup merely rolled his eyes. But Hiccup felt a small drop in his stomach watching her being so lovingly to Kristoff. Jack suddenly got an idea.
"Oh Hiccup I can't wait to go on this ride with you." Jack cooed in a high pitched voice mocking Anna. While putting his hands on Hiccups shoulder kicking one foot back.
"Of course M'lady, the pleasure is all mine." Hiccup bowed offering his arm to Jack.
Jack took it and marched onto the ride. Sticking his tongue out at Anna as they passed them. Anna stuck her tongue out in response and Kristoff laughed. They followed in suit with the boys. Jack and Hiccup sat directly behind Kristoff and Anna. Hiccup behind Kristoff and Jack behind Anna. Anna had to tie her green plaid shirt together for the ride so it wouldn't get caught on anything. Admiring her black t-shirt with a sandwich on it. She loves sandwiches. Which reminded her she was a little hungry.
"Hiccup your glasses. They might fall off." Kristoff warned.
"Nah dude, I got on this!" Hiccup prided showing off his latest invention. While everyone strapped themselves into the car.
"It's a high polymer rubber that I used to create an adjustable strap to attach to both ends of my glasses and wrap around my head. Fishing lines connect to clips to attach the back of the strap to my shirt. And I added a small suction cup of the same rubber to my nose pads to keep them steady in the front. My glasses ain't going anywhere!" He exclaimed.
"That's so cool!" Anna commented.
Just then everything clamped in and the operator says in complete monotone "please keep your feet and legs inside the car at all times.... *sigh* and North hopes you like the loop-da-loops" the operator pushed down the lever and off they went.
Whoops, hollers, and screams were heard by the other passengers. Jack already had his arms in the air while Hiccup had his arms out like he was flying. Kristoff was hanging on for dear life to the pull bar making small grunts of distress. Anna was just shouting with joy. The roller coaster went up and down and had a major loop.
"Raise your hands Anna it's more fun! You used to do that all the time!" Jack yelled amidst the shouts and rushing wind.
Anna remembering her courage threw her arms in the air with reckless abandonment. She got even more excited and shouted louder. The roller coaster went into an ice themed tunnel and turned into a sideways corkscrew. Anna, being the tiny thing that she was, started to slip because she didn't get her straps tight enough. Jack quickly reacted and slammed his hands onto her shoulders holding her in place. Hiccup looked worried for both of them.
"I gotcha Anna!" Jack smirked triumphantly.
"Thanks Jack!" She shouted back.
Kristoff barely seemed to notice anything of what just happened. He was focused on the upward climb and the downward spiral that was about to happen. Anna tightened her strap and threw her arms in the air again.
"That's our brave girl." Hiccup boasted.
When the ride ended Anna bounded out of the car practically squealing with delight.
"That was so totally awesome!" She bellowed.
"Most radically excellent!" Hiccup laughed air guitaring a riff. Imitating yet another one of his favorite 80's movies.
"You ok Anna? You almost fell back there." Jack chimed in.
"I wasn't gonna fall I merely slipped for a second I was gonna catch myself anyway." She shrugged.
Kristoff finally coming up to them, after had thrown up in a nearby trash can. Was about to suggest a slower paced ride. When Anna blurted out.
"I want to go on another roller coaster or something fast and that makes your stomach drop like that again! I'm finally starting to feel like my old self!"
In seeing his girlfriend so happy Kristoff decided he'd suck it up for a little while. Anna forgot about her slight hunger being so energized by the exciting rides.
"Ooh how about the Viking ship one that spins you around so you go upside down!" Anna suggested.
"Let's go!" Hiccup grinned as the made their way to the ride. Anna practically skipping the way there.
Kristoff groaned knowing he'd loose his lunch again. Jack winked at Hiccup but Hiccup was starting to feel a little queasy too. Was he really doing this for Anna? Or did he just not want her with Kristoff. Hiccup sook his head trying to think of something else. Jack having known Hiccup for years, knew when something was up.
"What's up chief? The plan is working fine." Jack whispered to Hiccup.
"I know it's working, I just..... Question my motives." Hiccup whispered back.
"What about Hiccup's motivation?" Anna blurted out coming between the two.
"His motivation to do that physics paper due in in a few weeks." Jack responded nonchalantly, smirking while doing so.
"Hiccup that's weeks away!" Anna emphasized.
"Well you know me..." Hiccup awkwardly chuckled. "Mr. Prepared!"
Anna gave him a look of disbelief but skipped ahead to be with Kristoff again holding his hand.
"Thanks Jack" Hiccup sighed looking at the couple ahead of them.
"I know what you mean though." Jack sighed as well.
Jack knew of Hiccups crush on Anna. And to be honest Jack sometimes wondered what his feelings for Anna were. But he wasn't as head over heels as Hiccup was. Both boys admitted that they liked her during freshman year. She never knew though. They both agreed that no matter what happened. They would all stay friends. They never got the courage to ask her, both too afraid. Afraid that if one of them did go out with her and they broke up. There might be a choosing of sides or worse. Neither of the two ever wanted It to come to that. Or put Anna or each other through that. It was all very complicated to them.
They all got onto the ride all 4 of them could fit into a row. Jack, Hiccup, Anna, then Kristoff. They all got strapped in tight. After everyone filled up the seats the ride started swinging. Back and forth and back and fourth. Really far back and really far forward.
"AA-AH aa-ah" Anna was fluctuating her voice with the momentum of the ride giggling every once in a while.
The ride went all the way up and around and everyone screamed. They all held onto the pull bar as they started going faster.
"Woooooooooo-Hoooooooooo" Hiccup hollered loving the feeling of the wind in his face.
Anna loved it too, she could almost feel the spray of the sea. Her and Hiccup leaned forward. There was a jolt. Hiccups hand landed on Anna's they both looked at each other. He was about to take his hand off hers when the ride shifted into going backwards. Making her grip the bar harder and him her hand harder.
Kristoff was absolutely oblivious to the whole thing again. Anna felt something sink in her stomach. Not just because the ride was going in loops. Kristoff was just not having a good time. The other two boys were laughing, hollering. And having a great time. Kristoff just wasn't enjoying anything of what Anna enjoyed. And Hiccup, she could've swore she'd seen him blush. Maybe it was just the ride and the blood rushing to his head. The whole thing made Anna feel low. Something she definitely didn't want to be today.
The ride ended. Jack and Hiccup practically falling over laughing with each other. Anna ached to be like that again. To be herself again. She spotted Kristoff over a trash can.
"Kristoff!" She rushed over knowing he just lost his lunch. "I'm so sorry dear are you ok?" She paused as he heaved. "Maybe we'll go on a slower ride for a while." She suggested rubbing his back kneeling next to the boy.
Kristoff gasped and re-caught his breath. Anna gave him a napkin from a nearby stand and he wiped his mouth.
"But your having such a good time." Kristoff groaned and heaved again.
The boys walked over.
"But your not." She stated softly And sighed.
Hiccup felt sorry for Kristoff and Anna. They both looked like they were trapped. He looked at Jack. Jack knowing what he was thinking nodded.
Hiccup kneeled in front of Anna and handed her another napkin while placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Why don't you and Kristoff go on the Ferris wheel... Jack and I need a break anyway. We'll scout out the best games and the best cotton candy." He cooed giving her a reassuring side grin. A grin that made her feel invincible so many times before. Every once in a while it gave her small butterflies in her stomach. She tried to shrug it off like every other time, but this time it stuck.
"Thanks Hiccup." she whispered. "Let's go to the Ferris wheel Kristoff." She said. Smiling weakly. A smile that broke all the boys hearts.
"That sounds much more my speed." Kristoff smiled back.
Jack watched the couple walk off. Then he spun around to see Hiccup walking in the other direction. Jack chased after him.
"Hiccup wait!" Jack called to his best friend.
"What for?" Hiccup growled plopping himself down on a bench putting his head in his hands.
"First off loose the attitude it's not a good look for you and second." Jack huffed. "We both knew that this was gonna happen sooner or later." Jack sat next to him staring straight ahead. "Yes maybe our motives are a little bit... off... But Hiccup. Anna has been our best friend for 11 years. We've been with her through everything. We know her, and we know when something or someone just isn't right for her."
"What if my jealousy is preventing me from seeing what's best for her!" He shouted throwing his arms in frustration.
"The fact that you want what's best for her tells me that your hearts in the right place." Jack smirked. "That big nerd sized head will catch up with your heart sooner or later." Jack chuckled ruffling Hiccup's hair.
Hiccup flicked Jacks hand off his head smiling at his friend. Jack surprisingly had his moments when he's wise.
Meanwhile up atop the Ferris Wheel. Kristoff and Anna were having their own moment. Anna looked at her two best friends down below. Hiccup looked distressed. But Jack ruffled Hiccups hair and they gave each other those cheeky side grins that Anna adored so much. She sighed. As did Kristoff.
"Alright say it." Kristoff exhaled.
"Say what?" Anna looked at him confused.
"Anna, you are an extraordinary person. So full of life, I don't wanna hold that fire you have in you back." He stated looking at her.
"Kristoff, your not-not amazing! -I mean it's not that you aren't amazing- You are!" She babbled. "It's just... I don't want you to always be trailing behind me wherever I go. Cuz that's not fair to you." Anna sighed. Kristoff chuckled.
"You need someone who can keep up with you. You are as wild as a mustang. Your adventures are not over yet."
"I'm not gonna be wild forever!" She exclaimed.
"Yes you will." He laughed. "Because Anna that's who you are. Sure you may tame down when your older. But you need someone to keep the adventure going."
Anna sighed, he was right. It had been a worry in her heart that some day the adventure of life was gonna die. She didn't want that. Even with kids and responsibilities she still wanted a sense of adventure and fun with that.
"I'm sorry I'm not right for you." She mumbled casting her head downwards.
"Anna I'm not gonna regret dating you." He said lifting her chin up. "You showed me that it's ok to let loose sometimes and to get out of my comfort zone. How much fun that can be. Even if I did loose my lunch." He smirked at her.
She punched his arm. And he bumped into her.
"Thank you Kristoff, for being so understanding." She smiled at him
"Your. Welcome."
"What do you think they're talking about up there?" Jack wondered aloud looking at the Ferris wheel trying to find them.
"Probably something about ditching us both and running off together to go find new friends." Hiccup stated flatly folding his arms across his chest.
"Why is it always worst case scenario with you?" Jack teased running his fingers through his already messy white hair.
"Cuz then there is no disappointment with failure. And, if it does work out your pleasantly surprised." Hiccup joked back.
"That's no way to live." Jack huffed and leaned back.
"You talking about Hiccups tendency to exaggerate?" Anna smiled placing herself in between the two.
"Yes-"
"No" they responded at the same time. Anna laughed.
"Where's Kristoff?" Jack asked
"He left to go home... We broke it off." She smiled weakly.
"Oh Anna I'm sorry." Hiccup bolted out of his grumpy state to console her.
"It's alright we just weren't right for each other. I'll be fine" She paused. "Besides I got my two favorite boys here," She said slinging her arms around both of them embracing them in side hugs. "And an amusement park full of rides and games to tryout. There's a lot of fun to be had here!"
"Can we go to the Hall of mirrors now!" Jack perked up looking like a dog who just got asked to go on a walk.
Anna's stomach growled.
"Let's go get some corn dogs first." Hiccup suggested.
"Good idea" the other two agreed
Jack made a beeline for the corn dog stand. Anna got up first, Hiccup however found a shred of courage. Grabbed her hand and spun her into a hug. Which she returned, letting a few tears fall. Hiccup being much taller than her let his chin rest perfectly on her head.
"I'm proud of you." He stated calmly.
"For what?" She sniffed looking him in the eye.
"For being our brave girl." He cupped her cheek with one hand and wiped away a tear with his thumb.
"You always know what I need." She giggle cried.
Hiccups heart clenched when she said that. He wanted so desperately to do what's good for her. Anna's heat raced at that crooked smile he gave her. He slung his arm around her shoulders and walked off to find Jack holding 3 corn dogs. Jack handed one to each
"Betcha can't make a funnier face than me at the hall of mirrors!" Jack challenged once they finished.
"You wish Frost!" Anna retorted
"Race ya!" They both ran towards the tent
"Hurry up Chief! Your the judge!" Jack called back to Hiccup.
Hiccup snorted at the two of his friends and ran off to join them.
