Chapter Five

After breakfast, Anna Hare (angel girl) approached me.
"Nico, right?" She asked, holding her fist out and I bumped it. It seemed that this was the official greeting, other mentalists had introduced themselves followed by a fist bump
"Yeah, your an athlete, aren't you?" I asked and she smiled. She seemed pretty cool
"That's right! Your spending the rest of the day with us, that okay?" I was hardly in a position to say no so I nodded and she smiled again, laughing a little.
"Let's got to the training room then!" She took off at a sprint and I sighed heavily before following in pursuit.

Once we arrive I saw that the training room was laid out like a gym. But as I looked closer I saw that there was specialist equipment that seemed foreign and strange to me. An older man came over to me and introduced himself as Mr. Lang, he was Asian but I couldn't quite tell exactly which country.
"I'm going to be with you for the week assessing your performance in each segment so we can conclude your result." I furrowed my brows and looked up at him as I stretched, as Anna had told me,
"Does the result determine which segment I'm assigned to?" He shook his head
"Good question, but no. The result is simply to guid you, some of our students excel in a number of the segments, the result helps them choose the right segment, but in the end the choice is all yours. Follow the result, don't follow the result. We don't care as long as your comfortable." He smiled at me and patted my back
"So if I'm not comfortable after my initial decision, can I change?" I looked up at Mr. Lang but he didn't meet my eye
"That's a tricky one Nico. As far as the rules go, yes you can change but the two segments involved, and in some cases the whole school sees the changee as a traitor. It can be very difficult for the student." I was about to ask something else when Anna came over and handed me a bundle of warm folded clothes
"You are going to have to get out of the suit to show us what you've got!"

I emerged in the shorts, gym shirt and running shoes hesitantly. It was gross, in my opinion the athletes were already out as soon as I was presented with Lycra.
"Awesome!" Anna's voice boomed through the room and she strides over to me, and placed a thin arm around my shoulders in a friendly fashion
"Now, I don't want you getting nervous or embarrassed. I'm only going to put you through the basic result test to see if your one of us! So first of all, your going to race Henry. He's the faster runner here, so I want to see if your a runner."
Henry was tall and fit, his muscle tee was white and showed his perfect toned abs beneath it.
"I want you to beat Henry to the finish line, no rules apart from that your not allowed to hurt him or take each other out in any way. It's just a race, so just get there first! Okay?" She asked and we nodded. I lines up next to him and felt like a dwarf. Henry got down into a runners starting position. I had an idea. I just stood idly at the starting line looking down the two hundred meter running track. There was a count down and then a pistol went off and summed the shadows around me, that hid in the corners and the swaddled me and carries me to the other end, which I reached just before Henry bolted over with smoke coming from his sneakers.
"Hey how'd you do that?" He asked smiling, and giving me a sideways high-five
"It's called shadow travel, I use the-" that's when Anna began clapping, walking slowly over to us. The rest of the room joined in too.
"Looks like you got an athletes ability!" She was smiling brilliantly at me and I was soon surrounded by a group, two or three deep, all asking about my shadow traveling. Mr. Lang pulled me out but the crowd followed to hear what he was saying
"Nice, Mr. di Angelo! Very, very nice!" Everyone seemed really proud of me. It was a nice feeling to have people believe in you.
"So what's it going to be?" Anna joined my side, arm around my shoulders
"Well, Nico you get scored out of ten for each of your ability or performances each segment." I nodded, eager to hear my score. Despite what Geoffrey had said I actually really liked the Athletes.
"Come on Lang!" Anna asked, tapping my shoulder with her fingers in anticipation. We looked and one another as Mr. Lang took a huge breath
"So far You've scored an .... 8 in the Athletes section!" Everyone cries outrage, even Anna threw her hand up!
"Hey now! He deserves a ten! For innovative thinking alone!"
"Anna, he was good but he wasn't that good, and it also seems to be classed under the Mentalist segment-" more outrage
"The mentalists? The MENTALISTS!" Anna yelled, almost everyone else silenced
"Were not loosing this little fire cracker to those Batty b-"
"Anna!" Mr. Lang warned and she shot him a glare.
"Okay, well you've still got the rest of the day with us so we might as well see how you do in combat situations..."

Needless to say I took the whole team out. Even some of the best were all beaten. We were doing 'combat' using the rules of fencing. We were using blunt swords which sensed when it was toughed and flashed. The aim of the exercise was not to get toughed yourself, but to touch the other person. If you were touched you were out. I hadn't lost yet.
"Okay, okay!" Anna walked into the ring nodding her head "you've fought almost everyone in our segment. So it's about time you fought the captain!" She flashed me a smirk before being frown a sword. That's when she used her own power, she closed her eyes and an aura of light shone around her and then huge white feathered wings sprouted from her back. I was stunned but soon shook it off, i couldn't lose to her just because I was dispatched by her pretty wings. The crowd was whooping and hollering. She rolled her shoulders and flapped the wings to stretch them.
"You ready?" She smirked again and I only laughed
"Bring it on!"
The pistol went of and she disappeared, as did I. I had manage to adapt and develop my. Shadow taming abilities. I was now able to hide within them and move without being seen. But it seemed Anna had watched my technique and acquired her own version. I searched the entire room, trying to catch a glimpse of her, but she was surly doing the same
"Come out, come out where ever you are!" Her voice seemed to come from the ceiling but I wouldn't all into her traps. That's when a small white feather floated down in front on me, Anna wouldn't be this clumsy, I turned quickly and as I sprang from the shadows she leaped from the light, we collided and both swords lit at the same time. We landed in a heap. I'd fallen hard of the concrete floor and my ribs felt bruised, I spluttered a little and lifted my head to see Anna lying face down ten metres or so from me on the other side of the ring. Her feathers stained red with blood.
"Anna-" I croaked before I collapsed in splutter.
