After 35: Disadvantage
A few days had passed since Phil had fought with Alfie, I still hadn't gone back to my parents but at least there was still one place I felt at home.
"Glad you could make it, Philip," Miss Chic announced as Phil shuffled in through the doors and took first position with me. He had told me all day he wouldn't be coming and, no matter how much I told him he'd enjoy it if he gave it a go, he put his foot down. I was surprised to see him.
"Just Phil," Phil mumbled but of course she ignored him.
"Today, we will be doing a pas de deux which I hope is something we all know," she didn't directly look at Phil when she said it but everyone knew who the comment was directed at. "We will be having talent scouts in from London next month and I want everyone to be on top form. I hope this will build up character and allow you to open up to a variety of dancing. Anyone wishing to attend will need to perform for the scouts using your own choreographed routine."
I couldn't believe what she was saying. A summer programme was everything I had been waiting for. For way too long had I been hoping I could get in but they had never been bothered with this class, and now the talent scouts wanted us! Or, at the very least, one of us... I could be that one. I could perform for them, I just needed a good partner and I could show them how I could perfectly choose a routine to fit the both of us.
"Philip I'm partnering you up with Daniel. The on stage chemistry may be what you need," Miss Chic announced and then began to pair up more people in the group but I could barely hear who because my heart was beating too loudly. "Class, you'll need to come up with a song and prepare a routine for end of lesson."
End of lesson! My head shot away from Phil's direction in a flash and I focused on my teacher who was totally out of her mind.
"Miss. Chic, can't we have a little more time?" I asked and stepped forward, one hand still gripped on the bar tightly.
"No, you don't get extra perks." She barely glanced at me when she told me that and I wished dance teachers were easier to negotiate with but, if it interferes with their vision, there's no way you can get your way.
"Yeah, just cos you have a rookie with ya doesn't mean you get to do whatever," this kid, Rory, snidely commented. Ever since Miss. Chic chose me as her number one dancer, he's been looking for ways to get at me.
"Daniel, I cannot allow extra time but I will take into account that you are at a disadvantage," and with that she walked away.
I breathed in an exhausted breath, time to do this. If we really focused Phil and I could get through this session and at least have something to show her. We could practice all month for the talent scouts... if Phil wanted to do that.
"Phil?" I turned but there was a vacant spot where Phil had been. I quickly flicked my vision around the studio and managed to see the changing room door swinging to a close. I left my place at the bar and ran over to the changing rooms. "Phil?" I yelled as I pushed the door open and stumbled in. I spotted him tugging his shirt off. "What are you doing?"
"Leaving," he stated bluntly, then continued struggling to get his shirt off in his rushed state.
"But you just got here?" was it something I said?
"And now I'm going, wasn't that fun," he mocked and gave me an exasperated look.
"You're mad at me..." It was definitely something I said.
"No, I just don't want you to be put at a disadvantage because you have to babysit the rookie," he outburst and gripped the shirt he still had in his hand tightly, the black of the shirt exaggerated his white knuckles even more.
"Rory said that, not me," I defended myself but the argument was weak at best.
"You seemed to agree when you were talking to Miss whatever her name is," he told me and I saw his jaw clench as he looked away from me. I nearly told him her name but realised that wasn't the main point Phil was trying to express.
"I didn't mean it like that I just, I thought-"
"-You were thinking of yourself and I get it," he cut me off but now he looked more sad than angry. "I intruded on this part of your life."
"Can you just stop that!?" I sighed. "I said it so you wouldn't feel pressured."
"What?" He looked surprised and dropped his shirt on the floor as his grip relaxed.
"I didn't want you panicking about not being at the same level as me. I thought more time would help you out." He didn't say anything so I took a step forward and grabbed his shirt, I pushed it at his chest and he reflectively grabbed a hold of it. My hand grazed his chest and I may have let my fingers linger a little longer than I needed to. "Put your shirt back on and lets go pick a song."
"Damn, when did you become a dom?" He mumbled.
"What?" I asked and felt my face heat up, I hadn't realised I had been so forceful.
"Nothing," he sniggered at my flustered state and quickly covered up. He rushed out ahead of me as I grabbed my phone and headphones out of my bag.
