After 09: Binder Boy

Mr. Pool was still my Maths teacher. He remembered me from all those years ago but he didn't give me any sympathy as he threw the entire class into algebraic problems on the first day back.
"Why the fuck does Maths have letters now?" A boy said behind me, he walked in with the 'anime boy' at the start of the lesson.
"It's been that way since the 9th century, Alfie." Mr. Pool sighed at him and shook his head. He seemed tired of him which led me to believe that they knew each other well.
"Whateves sir," Alfie muttered and I heard his chair hit the back of the wall. I looked to see him leaning back on his chair, knees bent and feet propped on the edge of the desk. I didn't look at Alfie long before my eyes met with blue eyes for the second time that day.
"I wouldn't use slang terms around me," Mr. Pool blocked my view of blue eyes as he pushed Alfie's chair back down onto the ground, "unless you want yourself and your pal Phil to be in detention after school."
"Alfie, shut up!" The boy, who I now knew was called Phil, slapped Alfie on the shoulder who mocked pain.
"Chill out, Lester," he scoffed.
"It wouldn't be the first time you got me in trouble," Phil mumbled back and began to write in his maths book.
"You're such a goodie goodie," Alfie commented. He looked up and saw me looking, I quickly turned back to my desk and put my head down.
"Oh yeah?" Phil asked.
"Yeah," Alfie's voice was daring and it only took a moment of whispering before a note hit my left hand, forcing me to drop my pen. I picked it up with shaky hands and smoothed down the crumpled paper until I could see the the words:
"How's it going, binder boy?"
I knew Jessica had said something! Only she knew about that... and I don't even wear binders anymore. I realised I only wore the bandage because I wanted to stop my chest from growing when I never had boobs to begin with. It was stupid really. I didn't wear them because my puberty blockers were a better alternative now. They actually did stop them from growing.

"Shut up," I hissed aloud and they heard because soon a second note landed on my desk.
"What's the matter flat chest?"  This one read. It sounded just like something Jessica would've said. I hadn't escaped her, I had worked alongside the principal to make sure I wasn't in her class and I ended up with her little minions instead.
"I said shut up!" I growled and stood up so hard my chair flung back into their desk. I banged my clenched fist with the note in against the desk.
"Daniel Howell!" Mr. Pool yelled. I looked up to see everyone staring and I felt my anger fade and replace itself with awkwardness. "I will not have you disturbing this class, do I have to move you on the first day?"
"No-no, sir," I said and quickly sat down. I felt my face heat up.
"Good!" Mr Pool clapped his hands and indicated towards the board. "Then I guess you can tell me the answer to question one."
"420," I read off my page.
"BLAZE IT!" Alfie yelled behind me and I tried not to sigh as the whole class burst out laughing.
"Alfie, do I have to move you?" Mr. Pool threatened.
"Nah I'm good, sir," he said casually.
"Dan, you were correct," Mr.  Pool ignored him and turned to me. He asked other students the answers for the next ones and I tried to focus on my work but I couldn't block out Alfie and Phil.
"Wow what a nerd," Phil chuckled.
"Yeah she is. But I suppose she'd have plenty of time to study since she has no friends," Alfie responded. Just loud enough for me to hear, I could almost feel his eyes boring into my back.
She. She. She.
Each time he said it it felt like a punch to the gut.

Thankfully, the bell finally rang. I took my time packing up and was the last one out. Mr. Pool didn't say goodbye to me which was weird considering my tutors would always wave me off at home, but I wasn't at home anymore. This was completely new territory.
I wondered out of the classroom and didn't see the two boys hanging around outside the room until Alfie's foot tripped me up. I fell to the ground, my bag landed heavily on top of me.
"Oops," Alfie said casually and leant against the wall as he watched me pick myself up. I felt hands on my arms and I was lifted up.
"Lester, get away from Tranny Danny," Alfie barked at Phil who moved away from me just after I was on my feet.
"Ew yeah." I watched as Phil moved away, he wiped his hands on his jeans but I could see his eyes were full of sympathy. "I was just making sure she was okay, did no one ever tell you not to hurt a girl?"  He asked Alfie.
I gulped. Phil's eyes were no longer full of sympathy and a smirk filled his face. My mouth felt dry.
As I watched them walk down the corridor I couldn't shake away the look in Phil's eyes. I couldn't help but believe that there was a good person in him when Alfie wasn't there but I knew I was just deceiving myself. There was no way Phil Lester was a good person.
