There he was, stroking her hand, unable to let her go yet. They had gotten engaged and where going to tell everyone on Friday. He rubbed the space on her finger where the engagement ring should be, but they both decided not to show it off before they had told everyone.
"Just...just don't die on me, wise girl. Just don't give up on me yet!" He whispered with such force, as the tears made their way down his cheeks and dropped onto her unmoving fingers.
That's when her back arched and his girlfriend awoke
"GUYS! SHE WOKE UP!" He heard foot steps but no one rushed in
Her back remained in this uncomfortable arc as she struggled for breath, mouthing one word, dying to say one word
"Percy!"
As she gagged and retched for the air she so desperately needed, her legs kicked and hands dug into the mattress. Her head was tilted back in an unnatural curve, everything about her body seemed wrong and painful, Percy tried so hard to help her but kept calling for the professionals to hurry, but all he heard where footsteps, they never delivered the feet they belonged to
That's when Annabeth, breathed normally
"PERCY!" She managed to say, hoarsely. She then exhaled. With that single outward breath, all her pain seems to disappear. Her back relaxed and she lay normally. But with the pain, went the glint that lived in her stormy eyes, with it went the curve of a smile on her lips. With the pain, went her life.
"Annabeth...." Percy, whispered. He knew it was too late, but he didn't want it to be real. That's when he lost it. His core seemed to burn with just never ending pain. It seemed to grow and pulse as he moved. He screamed and cursed and threw things across the room. He broke chairs and smashed windows, but nothing seemed to help, so he gave in to it. To the hurting and to the tears. He gave in to the truth, His fiancé was dead, and he could have stopped it. He curled up into a ball on her bed, tears streaming so fast that he couldn't even see her. He could no longer sense her presence in the room, she used to dominate every space she entered, now it was all gone. She was just a body. He slipped his fingers through hers, they were still warm but it made him gag to think that within hours, the they would be cold and stiff.
