SPENCER'S MIND WAS spinning at the information he was given. He didn't believe the things that were said about his sweet Evelyn, and he didn't want too.
It felt like hours as he dialed Evelyn's number, and when she didn't answer, he immediately called Kelsey. She didn't answer either, his only option was to call Caleb. Nor did he answer.
With his mind running and churning, he grabbed his keys and left his apartment in a hurry. Only the conversation and the need to talk to Evelyn was on his mind as he sped over to the outskirts of Nashville to his best friend's home.
Spencer had managed to relax once he saw their house as he drove down the street. He was in such a hurry, Spencer sped into the driveway and nearly forgot to park his car and turn it off. Thankfully though, he did. And for evidence of the conversation, Spencer picked up his phone and jogged up to the door.
He was such out of breath that had to pause when Kelsey answered the door. With Emmett on her hip, and with her free hand, she laid it on his shoulder.
"Spencer, hey, you need to calm down." She spoke softly.
"Evelyn—," he whispered, "I need her."
Kelsey rose an eyebrow, but moved aside to let him. "She's in her bedroom."
Spencer nodded, rushing past her and down the hallway to his girlfriend's door. Not even a minute after knocking on her bedroom, his blonde and hazel eyed beauty stood before him. With the sight of her perfect, his worries slowly diminished.
"Hey, everything okay?" Evelyn asked softly, gently laying her hand on his arm.
Spencer sighed, "Who's Trenton?"
He noticed as pain and anger were written across her face. Spencer could see her eyes beginning to water as Evelyn bit down on her bottom lip.
"My ex." She whispered, looking down to feet, scared to even look at Spencer. "Why?"
"He messaged me, and told me something. I don't believe it's true, but I wanted to hear the story." Spencer explained, "I get if you don't want too, but it worried me. Especially coming from someone in your past."
A soft sigh left Evelyn's lips as she grasped his hand, pulling him into her room. Spencer took the invitation, and sat on her white bed, watching her close the door quietly. She padded over, sitting next to him and fidgeting with her fingers in her lap.
Evelyn looked to him slightly, "What did Trenton tell you?" She asked.
"That—That you used to hit him, and abuse him." He answered, but his words were shaky. Spencer didn't want to hurt her if this part of her past was traumatic, he cared for her too much to let that happen.
Evelyn scoffed, shaking her head. "No, no, no. It was completely reversed."
"What happened?" Spencer asked quietly, "If you don't mind me asking."
Spencer noticed the soft sigh that left her lips as she resituated herself on the bed to face him. He also noticed that her normally bright hazel eyes were dull and dark; and it hurt him.
She shook her head, "Trenton is a dark piece of my past. He was a Senior when I met him, and he seemed so sweet. He was always happy, and cracking jokes. I was infatuated with him, so much to the point where I thought I was in love. He asked me to the homecoming dance, and that night, he asked me to be his girlfriend."
Spencer moved back, sitting next to her and wrapping his arms around her. He smiled softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"I'm right here, Evie." He reassured, "It's okay."
"Our relationship seemed perfect. I went to his football games, and we went on amazing dates, and he bought me expensive gifts. But he controlled my life; how much time I could with my family, and friends, or studying. When Prom came around, he asked me. I said yes. That night, at prom, we had an argument. He hit me afterwards, and it lasted a couple more weeks as it grew worse. My parents found out, and I was forced to leave him, which I was happy about. We went to court, and we all got restraining orders against him." Evelyn sighed, explaining almost everything.
Unconsciously, Spencer pulled the girl closer to him, the feeling of need to protect her grew stronger. He knew that he cared for her so much, so much that the piece of her dark past broke his heart as much as it did hers.
"I'm so sorry, pretty girl." Spencer whispered.
And as much as Evelyn wanted to break down, the nickname leaving his lips made her smile slightly. He had such an effect on her, that his words made her smile. In that moment, she knew that he was different; different than any other boy she ever had feelings for. Evelyn knew that Spencer was a one-of-a-kind guy.
"He's ruined a lot for me," she stated, "And I don't want him ruining this."
"He won't."
