Doc Ock wants to get revenge on (Hobo) Spiderman. When he learns that Spiderman has a protege, he decides to find, capture, and generally be mean to the protege. Doc Ock hopes to make Spiderman pay.

But, Spiderman doesn't notice for a couple months. And a scientist, even an ex one, still needs a place to conduct experiments...
