Chapter 4 - A crimson mystery
"I know I've been irresponsible this whole time", sighed Chrissy, "And I know this is the feedback I'll receive when I present myself at this meeting-"
Before she could finish her line, there was a loud thud on the door room.
"I told you not to punch it!" - A voice was heard outside
"I didn't mean to!" - replied another voice
"Who would come at this hour?", wondered Chrissy, she looked at her assistant and told him to open the door
The assistant gently opened the door, he only peeked through the outside then turned his head back to the whole conference room with an amazed look:
"The Defenders! They're here! And so is Miss Winther!"
Then, he continued opening the door to give a wider space for the "guests" to come in.
"Greetings!", waved Chermion.
Soon after, every Moonstonians bowed down, putting their hands on the left side of their chests. Chrissy just stood there with a slight smirk.
"Hold on, don't you think it's a bit off?", whispered Melly.
"To them, we are their saviors", said Rhye. "they're showing respect towards us"
"We are the sub-group Aurora Borealis", smiled Chermion. "It's a little bit rude to interrupt your meeting, but perhaps we can borrow General Kalandramaz to ask her about some informations, yes?"
"May we ask what you will be discussing about?", asked a girl from the room, the man next to her bumped her shoulder, telling her it was rude
"Top secret", answered Rhye. "This is about the missing gems of the Moonstone Sceptor"
The whole room gasped. They were all willing to lend Chrissy to the Defenders.
"Well then, I should get going," said Chrissy, pulling off her white gloves. "I'll be inside my office"
Going through the hallway with four other girls, she let out a relieved sigh:
"Thank you for saving me back there. Those workers will never forgive me"
"It was Hyacinthe's idea", Rhye pointed out
"Yeah, I have guessed so" , Chrissy looked at Hyacinthe with a warm smile, leaving the blonde girl blush.
Ew, there's no way she's gonna do that to me , thought Melly while walking behind them
"So," Chermion raised her voice. "your working room is now stacked with more files, Kalandramaz?"
"Don't do that kind of hint", said Chrissy. "What do you want to ask me about?"
"Ruby. The File of the Park family", answered Rhye.
"Ah, yes, the gem I asked you three to look for. Got some problems, huh?", Chrissy took out her keys and started unlocking the office door.
"Too bad we didn't get to witness the strange phenomenon", said Chermion. "but Melly did"
Chrissy stopped. She didn't even bat an eye. She looked at Melly and replied nonchalantly :
"I see."
The office room was big and decorated with various ornaments. The huge chandelier on the roof gave a classical feeling. Behind Chrissy's working desk hanged a mural, seemed like a painting of herself holding a sword, with a girl in a white dress behind her. Must be the Princess.
"It's a pity that I don't have any crystal tea left to welcome you all", Chrissy searched for the files on the bookshelf, "There's some Amber Cake left in the cabinets though".
"No worries, Kalandramaz", giggled Chermion. "We don't mind"
"Alright, found it", Chrissy pulled down an old, dusty file. The front was written in Faridatian letters : "The Ruby Park file"
"Who's Ruby Park?", asked Melly.
"Park Dae-won's mother" - answered Rhye
"Anything relates to Ruby Park will be kept in here. Like informations of her extended family, for example."
"We want to read about her paternal great granddaughter", Melly finally spoke out
"Indeed", said Chrissy, handing the three girls a smaller file. Chermion recognised the name on the title first. It was also written in Faridatian. She passed the papers to Rhye, she finished reading and nodded her head.
"Melly was right. This mystery is solved", Rhye looked at Melly, the blue haired girl was a little bit surprised by her words.
"So?", asked Chrissy
"We confirm that the missing Ruby belongs to Ellery Park, Dae-won's granddaughter. And we've met her in person, actually."
There was no response to Rhye's confirmation. The girls had to wait a moment to hear Chrissy snorting, using her left hand to hold her stomach.
She then let out a big laugh:
"Hah! Are you sure? You do realize our kingdom had been searching traces of her for three years ever since she disappeared, right? Some affirmed she was killed by the Garnetians. Slow down right there, Team Borealis, maybe that was just some random girl who looked similar to Ellery. Why would you think, all this time, she hid somewhere near your place?"
"The Ruby.", said Melly.
"Huh?", Chrissy stopped laughing.
"You said there was a Ruby near our place, and you suspected it was the one from the Sceptor."
"Melly," Chrissy continued with a low voice. "Ellery Park was a nominated Rubian Defender. Sadly, she got disqualified for breaking the rules when she was battling Crystal Rin in the Annually Arena games. She left, exactly. Then she didn't return to this kingdom."
"So what?", Melly was confused. Chrissy didn't even mention about the Ruby.
"So what?!", Chrissy's tone went higher. "Let me tell you just one thing: The Gem only belongs to the current owner once they themselves receive the Moonstone Pin. On the other hand, Ellery is only a part of the Park family. The Ruby can be held by anyone else in that, not only her. She didn't have enough potential to become a Moonstonian Defender. She DOESN'T deserve the Ruby."
"You never know the reason she left?", asked Chermion. She only knew a little about Ellery. Same age as Melly, wore glasses. Blue eyes, short orange hair.
"It's not necessary", pouted Chrissy.
"Not necessary, not necessary!", Melly went off her limit. She slammed her fist on the desk. "It's time to convince you! Everything makes so much sense but you didn't even care! I'd like to say some few things, in a logical order."
"Right, go on", Chrissy remained her sarcastic tone.
"Again, you said The Ruby on Earth could be the one matching with the Sceptor. Now first, we saw a girl, perhaps Ellery. Two things related in a same place! Second, I visited her mansion. Crimson Red, just like a Ruby. We thought it was her because when I got near to Ellery," Melly pulled out her pin. "This thing shone a red light. And uhh, you know how our pins shine when there's a gem near us? Yep, it happened."
Chrissy's face expression slightly changed
"Oh, forgot one thing. She calls herself Ellery. Yes. I don't make things up, I promise. The real problem about her, she couldn't define weathers. It was raining when I visited her, but she kept saying it was snowing. Last but not least, when I took a bath in her mansion, I heard whispering voices saying "Crystal". Probably something about that Crystal girl you just mentioned."
Suddenly, there were sounds of broken tea cups. It was Hyacinthe.
"Hya!", screamed Chrissy.
"S-sorry," panicked Hyacinthe. "I'll clean them right away!"
Chrissy sighed. All of this, just... She couldn't believe Melly right now. Her eyes glanced at Chermion and Rhye.
"We saw the mansion, Melly was with "Ellery".", said Rhye
"All right," Chrissy stood up, massaging the back of her head. "You can keep this Ellery file and return it to me as soon as you've found the Ruby."
Chermion took the file. Melly was already outside the room
"Melly must be hungry. We should go home right now", Chermion looked at Rhye.
As Chermion and Rhye left the office, Chrissy's words later turned into an invisible string, suddenly holding them back:
"Nobody ever declared that the gems on the scepter have to be in an actual crystallized form. They could be spiritual, or other objects."
"Melly, something wrong?", Rhye opened the office door, she happened to see Melly standing still in the hallway.
"Someone was calling my name", said Melly. "At first, I thought my ears were being badonkers because no one in the castle even knows me, but then that voice spoke again."
Chermion held Melly's hand. "Sorry for Chrissy's attitude. It's your first day."
"No, no, I get it, but," Melly's sight got blurry, she felt extremely tired, all of a sudden.
She lost her balance, her legs lost their feelings.
The next thing she knew, she was on the floor. Her eyelids started closing.
"Melly? Melly!!" Chermion's shaking voice faded, as Melly's view turned into black.
