7-ambulance

"ambulance! someone call an ambulance!"

she can't think. there's blood everywhere-oh god, it's his blood, it's him, he's the one that got hurt-

she tries to speak but her voice is lodged in her throat and suddenly the firemen are here and there's a stretcher being brought out. she's shoved aside, a stretcher is brought out- she's shoved aside, a stretcher is brought out-

it's his blood, she thinks, and suddenly she's screaming his name in a panic. rushing forward, she yells, "please! that's my friend!"

finally they finish loading him on the ambulance and one of the men notices her. "your friend?"

"yes. please, let me stay with him." she's ready to beg, to do anything, but she's just told to get in the ambulance and to sit beside him.

they've covered his body with a piece of cloth, and all the better since she doesn't think she can handle the gory sight. even so, she also doesn't know how bad it is. it's all she can do to tell herself that he definitely isn't dead, that there's no way he can be dead.

they're in an ambulance and they're on the way to the hospital, so there's no way he's dead, because they'll save him. they'll definitely save him.

when they arrive she's told that she has to wait in the lobby. they ask her to call his family, they ask her questions about what happened, she's told to do a lot of things to help out, but she doesn't leave. visiting hours end, and his family leaves, but she sits in the lobby, waiting, until the staff kicks her out.

she would wait a million years for him, if it meant he would live.

a body clad in white lies on the bed.

there's no movement in the room, the doctors and nurses having finished their business. the walls are a pristine white, the hardwood floor is clean. the window is open slightly and the night air whooshes in gently to rustle his hair.

if you were looking at him from afar, you might think he was dead, with the way he's barely breathing. but there's an IV drip along with other machines and the quiet beep of the heart monitor assures everyone that, yes, he is alive. the blood has been cleaned, the wounds stitched, and he is most definitely alive.

he just needs to wake up now.
