5-ironic, isn't it

[shouting.
breaks shrieking.
the world turns red.]

car crashes are scary things. no matter how careful someone is, another driver might still cause one. even if you're far away, the collision of cars might force you to get caught in it anyways. even when parents tell their child not to drink and drive, it always happens. car crashes happen for the stupidest reasons, and most of the time someone who doesn't deserve to die ends up dying.

absentminded thoughts run through his head during his evening walk. having finished his work, he strolls through the city with no real purpose in an attempt to clear his head.

he can remember how clumsy she used to be. many times he had to grab her before she walked towards a red light, or tripped on her own two feet. she would always laugh and say, sorry! thanks for helping me, and he would scold her for being clumsy.

when was the last time that had happened? it had been so long already since their fallout. he wonders if she's doing well. he wonders if he should feel nostalgic.

shouting.
he stops, startled. he's in the middle of the road. there's a car rushing towards him. a red light in front of him.

breaks shrieking.
he needs to move, to get out of the way, but his body is paralyzed. he can't move anything. as he stares at the car racing towards him, the world seems to freeze.
someone screams his name. out of the corner of his eye, he sees her, a panicked look on her face. she's running towards him, but his attention falls back to the car. why is she so worried? more importantly, this won't be a cliche 'pushing person out of the way just to get hit yourself', will it? he'd rather die than let her get even the slightest bit hurt.
he notices the car is right in front of him now, and he knows it's going to hit him.

ironic, isn't it, he thinks, that instead of him preventing her from being hit, he's the one in the middle of the road. he wonders if he should be feeling scared.

the world turns red.
