it's a lazy afternoon. they're lying on the floor, drawing doodles on notebooks and procrastinating homework.

"hey, did you know that amelia and jackson got together?"

"yeah." he nods lazily.

she hums, a content smile on her face as she lies in the sunlight. "did you know that hayley has two cats?"

he nods again.

"then... did you know that some people think i have weird hobbies?"

"you have bad taste in music, that's probably why."

"meanie. so mean!"

he hums, a slow smile gracing his face as well. his eyes are closed, and she uses this chance to stare openly at his features. he has dark hair that looks soft, and she knows she would like to run her fingers through it. he may have dyed his hair at one point since there was some faded dark blue blended in with his hair-she quite liked it, actually. vaguely she remembered him saying something about trying red in his hair too.

but God, she loved his face. his lips in that small smile as he lay there, and his nose positioned perfectly in the centre tied it all together. his looks were nothing special, but she liked the way he was put together.

his arms are folded under his head comfortably, she notes, and the way they're positioned shows off his toned muscles the slightest bit.

not that she's staring.

okay, she's totally staring. shamelessly. but hey, it's not like he's gonna catch her. she's just admiring his features.

she can't help but chuckle at this. "did you know that people say you're really mean to the people you like? that's really childish y'know. you're never gonna get a girlfriend that way."

he snorts disgustedly, but the smile stays on his face. "i wholeheartedly deny that accusation. plus, i'm not really looking for a partner right now."

she chooses to ignore the second statement and instead says, "you know everything, huh?"

he shrugs. "try telling me something i don't know."

"something you don't know...? that's tough..." the girl hums thoughtfully. "give me a minute-"

"ten seconds countdown-! ten, nine, eight,"

there's a horrified screech and she exclaims indignantly. "h-hey! i know you like teasing people but that's a bit too much! just a bit too much y'know!"

"five, four,"

she opens her mouth to say something, panics, and finally blurts it out as fast as she can.

"did you know i like you?"

...

he stiffens, the smile slipping from his face. she trembles, already bracing herself for his answer.

"...yeah. i know."

they both sit up. he looks at her, his eyes uncertain. even now, even when he's close to breaking her heart, she can't help but think that he looks so... so pretty? so handsome? so ethereal?

he opens his mouth to speak, closes it, opens it. he's never been good with words, she knows, and the look in his eyes say it all anyways.

"i should go." her own voice is soft, and she starts packing her stuff.

all the while he tries to find something, anything to say to her. he curses himself for being in this situation. fooling himself into believing that their friendship could continue, when it had been that obvious she liked him? how stupid was he?

she's done gathering everything and she stands, legs shaky and eyes tearing up. she knew this would happen, but she still caused it. knew all she would get was pain. she knew this, so why?! why did she even bother to say it out loud?! why had she even bothered?!

she stumbles toward the door, hand reaching for the handle. the door opens and he coughs suddenly, and he finally says something. the words he say are simple but somehow it makes everything feel so final. it doesn't make it worse or make it better, just final.

"i'm sorry."

she laughs. when she glances backwards, she flashes her usual, happy-go-lucky smile and laughs again. the laugh contradicts her smile- it's hopeless and full of pain.

"i know. i'm sorry too."

the door closes with a snick.

a few seconds later, he closes his eyes then looks up to stare at the ceiling. tears slowly slip out of his eyes, small glittering diamonds that shouldn't have been possible.

"sorry," he says again, the small word seeming to close in on itself in his small apartment. "i'm really sorry."

Notes: what did I tell you???? It's SAD. If you want a happier ending you can read the story I used for inspiration, but it's shorter and it's focused on Soramafu. Just letting you know.

Also it took so long to figure out 'ethereal'! I used ephemeral and then effervescent but it wasn't right haha.
