Part 6
The day before your birthday you dragged me to a concert. When I said I didn't want to go, you pulled your sixteenth birthday card. Is that even a card, or did I just fall for it because I secretly wanted to go? I guess it's more that we pulled that card on my mom.
You convinced one of your older friends to drive us up there. Didn't you say he had family there or something? I can't even remember.
As we were loading the car, our moms were pacing outside. They kept mumbling about some snow storm, but I wasn't paying attention. The weather was actually unusually warm for July.
Finally, everything was loaded, and we hugged everyone goodbye before hopping into the car.
"We got you separate rooms! Stay in them!" your mom shouted, and we laughed, waving through the window.
Once we reached the destination after a whole day of driving and blasting music, I stepped out. The change in temperature was immedately obvious.
"Hey, look, that cloud looks like a blanket!" I said in mock fervor.
"At least I'm under that blanket with you." You winked, shouldering your bag and slinging your arm around my shoulders.
"Hey," I teased shoving you off as we headed toward the hotel, bumping into each other every few feet.
The concert wasn't 'til the next day, your birthday, so we set up shop and passed out... in our separate beds because we are good children like that.
My alarm went off before the sun even rose, and I about sprung from my bed. I could normally sleep 'til two, but I was so excited for all the plans you had made. About an hour later I was ready and stepped out into your room. You stood half dressed in front of the window, your shirt hanging around your neck.
"Um, Ash, you wanted to leave five minutes ago."
"I don't think we are going anywhere," you said, not moving. I came up beside you and winced.
"Oh my gosh, what is that? It's blinding!" I cried, shielding my eyes and stumbling back.
You giggled, finally turning from the window. "It's snow!"
"It's horrid! How could so much solid mass fall from the sky and block the doors!?"
"It's kind of cool," you said, your eyes sparkling as you pressed your face to the window. And that is when I knew you had gone mad.
"It ruined your birthday."
"Daww, no it didn't," you consoled, sticking your arms through the holes of your shirt and pulling it down. "Come on." You nodded to the door.
"Where are we going?"
"Down stairs. We need more sheets, some popcorn, movies, and chocolate!" You threw the door open and walked backwards, facing me. You smiled wide, and your tongue peeked through the gaps of your teeth which I'm sure you know makes me about die inside.
"We could have had a movie night at home, though. And you paid for that concert."
You shrugged. "And this is better than those old movie nights at home!"
"Why?"
"Because I said so!" Excitedly, you took off down the hall, jumping into the elevator to hold it. Your finger pressed to the button, you grinned as I strolled in. "I will make you smile today," you said, pecking me on the lips. I wanted to smile then, but with determination I restrained myself. I couldn't let you win that easily.
A soft glow coming from the television filled the white fort. I sighed, contentedly full of cold left-over pizza from the day before. Checking the time, I smiled and twisted a bit to face you, wrapping my arms tighter around your waist. "Hey, Ash."
"Hmm?" You tried to look down at me, a double chin forming at your neck, and I giggled.
"Happy birthday."
"Hey, how did you know what time I was born, ya creep," you teased, kissing my forehead.
"I may or may not have asked your mom. Hold on a sec." Scrambling from the sheets, I ducked out of our makeshift tent and squinted in the light. Dashing into my room, I grabbed the package and returned. "Here."
"Aw you didn't have to get me anything," you said while tearing off the paper.
"Slow down there, tiger," I laughed.
Your face fell in utter amazement as you saw the stack of CD's. "Sierra, you shouldn't have. This must have cost a fortune."
"And you expect me to believe these concert tickets you bought didn't?"
You didn't respond, just riffled through the pile. They were all people I had heard you listening to before, and I had stolen your laptop to look through your music library.
"Are they okay?"
"Sierra, half of these are signed."
"Yeah," I chuckled nervously. "Ran all around the world chasing people down to get those autographs, so you better appreciate it!"
"All around the world on the internet," you teased, stacking them back up and setting them aside gently.
When you sat back up, there was a small box in your hand. You tried to give it to me, but I crossed my arms.
"It's your birthday, Ash. What the hell is this?"
"It's for you."
I shook my head. "I am taking nothing from you. Today is all about you." Not to mention I was a bit scared of what the box might hold, but scared in a good way.
"It'll make me happy if you take this," you twisted your words, smirking because you knew you had me.
Taking the box, I pried it open and just stared inside it. After a moment, you grabbed it back and looked inside yourself. "Geeze, Sierra! I was scared for a second. I though maybe it wasn't there.... Wait, do you not like it?" You looked up at me, hopeful.
"I love it, Ash."
"Then?"
"It's just so beautiful." It was subtle, just how I prefer jewelry, a thin silver chain with a matching paper airpane at the end. Taking it from the box, you crawled around me and brushed my hair to the side, connecting the clasp. Your arms wrapped securely around me, you rested your head on my shoulder and kissed my jawline. I felt you smile against my cheek. Playfully, I shifted my weight causing us both to tumble onto the blankets.
Rolling over in your arms, I nuzzled into your neck. The familiar smell of vanilla and fresh woods poured into me, and I swear I must have made some weird noise, but you didn't react to it. Instead, you reached forward and slipped the pendant between your fingers.
"This way you can take me with you wherever you are," you said gently. Pulling away just enough that you could get a good look at it, you pointed to a random spot on the plane. It didn't do much good, though, as your fingertip was just as big as the plane. "See, I'm right there."
I laughed, but your looked at me seriously.
"No look!"
Taking the pendent from you, I did look, and my mouth went dry as I saw a tiny diamond stuck in the metal.
"It's fake, but..." you blushed slightly. "Oh!" Reaching into the neck of your shirt, you pulled out an identical piece just with a slightly heavier chain. You smiled so wide, pride written all over your face.
"Ash..."
You say you saw a tear in my eye, but I deny that adamantly... okay... maybe one tear.
"Am I in your plane?"
You nodded, and I leaned close, seeing a black dot on yours.
"Why am I black?" I laughed. "Am I a black hole in your life, consuming every part of it?"
You giggled. "I never thought of it like that. I just liked the black, but yeah, you kind of are."
I laughed lightly before kissing you gently. Opening my eyes, I saw you staring at me, and when you caught my glance you crossed your own eyes. Caught off guard, I burst into laughter, pulling away.
"Hey," you pouted.
"Then don't make faces at me!"
"I do what I want," you teased, clutching the necklace. "Now where were we?"
"Hmmm we were talking about how I am your black hole."
"Well, it looks like I'm getting pulled in again."
"You don't say?"
Well, I do say that you had improved greatly in the past three years. The taste of cheetos now was replaced by chocolate, popcorn, and day-old pizza, which, for some reason, I enjoyed immensely.
I have to get to school now, but I love you.
Happy birthday, ya turd monkey
Your black hole,
~Sierra
Sat on the pavement waiting for the bus, I pulled out the chain from under my shirt. The morning light glinted off the polished metal and caught on the gem.
"Hey, Ash, you ready for school?" I asked as the bus pulled up.
Tucking the plane back into the safety of the fabric, I felt it, cold against my heart. "I wish you could still drive me. The bus sucks."
