2. Calling
After four months of earnest waiting Mike finally received his Enchanters degree 1st Level, he was now an Enchanter, but at the end of the day he no longer wanted to work at the Supreme Council, It would be a job that took too much time off his hands when he would later on move to the human realm.
Instead, he took a teaching job at one of Casterlot's famous schools, Hexlock Academy.
That wasn't all though, Mike was what the magic realm called a Magical Element, a magical being who neither needed wands to harness their magic like wizards or witches nor wings to do so like Fairies and pixies.
Magical Elements were rare beings, and Mike was one of the few mature ones in Casterlot at that time, who recently became an Enchanter. He was made the new guardian of the Magisphere due to his family heritage and it was a fairly easy job. All he had to do was hide the Magisphere and not tell anyone.
Everything seemed to be running smoothly, a new job, money to take care of his family, and once Freya was old enough to start school they'd move to earth.
The peace was only temporary because not long after Hexxini returned with more powerful dark magic and an army of worshippers. She was demanding the Law Keepers step down and hand the Magisphere over.
'Hexxini returns' Mike read out the headline of that day's newspaper, he continued reading. "She killed her whole family,” he mutters to himself.
The sharp ding of the doorbell pulled his attention from the news, “I’ll get it!” he called out so Rachel could rest. He opened the door, and a pixie wearing a gold uniform flew in with lightning speed. “Micheal Spells, the council requests your presence at the battle for the magic realm, being the guardian of the Magisphere, this is part of your duties.” the pixie said with a loud voice
“Do they really need me?” Mike asked ruefully.
“Yes, you have two days to report to the Supreme Court.” the pixie added and flew out at the same speed. Mike looked outside and saw some of his neighbors, moving inside their homes packing their things to move to the human world, those who were less human would stay in forests, and others had relations who could put them up.
War was coming and Casterlot was going to be its battleground. Mike went to his bedroom and broke the news to Rachel, “ What are we going to do?” She asked nervously.
“I have to get you and Freya to earth,” he said packing up Freya’s things.
Rachel growled, "And what about you, Mister? Don't tell me you plan on actually fighting with them."
"There's no time for this Rachel!" he snapped.
"Too bad because I don't want to leave you on your own!" She shot back, trembling slightly from fear, anger, and from so many other emotions she couldn't place.
"And what will happen to Freya?!" As if on cue, their baby girl began to wail from the other room.
“What are you standing around for, get your things ready” he ordered. She reluctantly did, when things were just becoming perfect, some Enchantress just had to come along and ruin everything.
Rachel carried Freya and got in the car, Mike locked up the house and entered the car also after putting their things in the trunk. He started the car and pushed some buttons, the vehicle flew upwards and kept going higher and higher above the evening clouds before going straight forward.
“We’re going to the Cross-bridge” Mike informed Rachel.
“The place filled with all those portals which lead to the human realm, right?” she question, her voice soft with hints of sadness.
He nodded, "I'm sorry we have to part like this but it's chaos in Casterlot."
"I don't really care, I just wish you'd come with us but I understand that you have a duty to this place, " she glanced out the window overlooking the city below as they flew by, "This amazing world needs your help and I can't force you not to help."
He reached a hand over the console and took hers, "It'll be fine, Rachel."
They arrived at the Cross-bridge, several clusters of tiny islands in the sky each island was large enough to contain a large car and a tall archway with glowing green swirls within.
Rachel wrote down the name of her town, while Mike talked to the guards, showed them his ID, and explained why he was going to earth.
“The town's address?” a guard asked
Rachel handed Mike the paper where she had written it, he gave it to the guard who threw it into the portal. After that, Mike was allowed to drive through, and they arrived at an alleyway in the human realm.
Rachel pulled out her phone, since she was back on earth it would work. “Hi, Dad, come pick me up at Mazes Parking lot,” she said, "Yeah, we're back... thanks... love you. I’ll explain when you get here.”
“What’d he say?” Mike asked
“He’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
“Why don’t you want me to drive you to their place?” He asked
“You know they don't like..." she gestured wildly, pointing to him the car, and everything else, "Just drop me off at the parking lot,” Rachel said peeking back at Freya in her car seat, fast asleep.
The silence between them on the way was tense and awkward.
Mike dropped Rachel and Freya’s things on a bench just outside the parking lot, he hugged her “Cheer up sweetie, I’ll be back,” he said, "She's just one Enchantress, I'm sure it's not as big a deal as their making it up to be."
“I believe you, just don’t get hurt,” Rachel said handing Freya to him, she had woken up once more. He moved his hand through her hair.
“I’ll miss you, honey.” he said letting her hold his hand, she smiled looking into his eyes, “But I'll be back to take care of you two in no time,” Mike said handing her back over to Rachel before entering the car and going back the way they had come.
Rachel watched the car soar overhead, missing Casterlot already so much. She sat on the bench waiting for her dad, their town was a relatively peaceful one so she wasn't worried about criminals showing up. She let the tears she'd been holding back fall down her face.
Why was she crying? Mike was going to be fine and they'd be together again, right? So why was she suddenly so worried?
Mr. Hills arrived not long after Mike left, he surveyed her calmly and sighed. He loaded Rachel’s bag into his car, and Rachel was at the back with Freya in her arms. The child had taken her baby rattle and was shaking it loudly.
“So this is the Freya we've read so much about?” Mr. Hills asked Getting into the driver seat, “Very energetic, I see.”
“Depends really,” Rachel said simply as the car began, happy he wasn't asking any questions at the moment.
It was pretty late at night, but they got home. Rachel dropped Freya on the backseat while she helped her dad take some bags into the House. She explained everything to her parents at the door. Meanwhile, Freya was in the car getting bored, four months ago she was diagnosed as an ‘M’ negative, that was then, now she was unknowingly levitating her baby rattle just to entertain herself, her giggling brought her grandma, Mrs. Hills to the scene. When the car door opened the rattle fell.
“Isn’t she the cutest thing?” Mrs. Hills cooed picking the baby girl up and taking her inside the house.

Fourteen years later...
Freya’s bedside alarm began its 8:00 am beeping, she crawled out of bed with a grain, dreading school until she remembered it was a weekend.
Excitement filled her veins, leading her to perform one of the cheesiest actions in human history. She pushed open her window and breathed in the fresh morning breeze.
Smells like pollution, she sighed inwardly turning the alarm off.
She got out of her room and slid down the stairs railings all the way down to the kitchen. “Morning, Nana,” she said giving her grandmother a hug.
“Good Morning dear, your mum’s in her room.” Mrs. Hills said
Freya nodded, walked into the living room, and snuck up behind her grandfather’s armchair where he was reading a newspaper. She quickly grabbed his reading glasses from his face and put them on.
“Why, you little rascal!” he exclaimed dropping the paper. She dodged into the kitchen.
“Freya give your granddad his glasses,” Rachel said, entering as well and heading straight for the coffee machine.
Mr. Hills walked in, “Okay kid hand back my glasses.”
“Okay pops,” Freya chuckled handing it back to him, it was their own little game they'd been playing ever since she was four, “Good Morning." She added with a quick hug.
“Mornin' to you too,” he replied returning the gesture.
Freya sat at the dining table drinking a glass of orange juice while her mum brought some toast and bacon.
The teen placed her mp3 on the table and it began playing her favorite song from their local pop idol, Lizzy Poppins.
“I told you, you shouldn't have got that noise maker for her,” Mr. Hills grumbled, glaring at the device.
“It’s called an mp3 pop,” Freya said losing interest in the food and singing along to the song.
“Come on dad, she’s been asking for one and I just felt it was a good birthday present,” Rachel said.
“Couldn’t you have gotten her something quieter, like a book? That thing's never off,” he complained, watching Freya sing continually, as she did, she thought back to her thirteenth birthday when she got the mp3, she loved music.
Rachel shrugged, she alone knew why she'd gotten her daughter the present. Freya was a naturally impulsive child, emotion clouded her judgment easily and Rachel had noticed those emotions lead to storage occurrences. Unexplained rainfalls, blooming flowers, and shattering objects. She didn't want to believe it at first but it became hard to deny, after the third time. Without Mike, she wasn't sure what to do so she could only hope and pray.
Music calmed Freya down and at the moment, Rachel would settle for anything to keep Freya's abilities out of the public eye.
Freya got up from the table and made her way upstairs after checking a text from her best friend, Jace McGrath.
She got dressed in her room and put her mp3 in her back pocket. She was back downstairs, on the way to the door, “I’m off to meet Jace at the park,” she called out.
“Hope you took your noisemaker with you?” Mr. Hills asked but Freya ignored the question, she opened the door about to step out but someone was already outside.
It was a tall man with large and bright brown eyes, she looked hard at him, with his bronze skin, he looked like a younger male version of her mum.
“Can I help you?” she asked.
“This still the Hills house?” he questioned with no introduction.
“Who’s asking?”
The man seemed kind of impatient, but he was determined, "I’m Zack Hills" he replied.
Before Freya could say anything else, it seemed Mr. Hills had heard “Who said that name?” He yelled furiously stomping toward the door, he stopped dead in his tracks seeing Zack there.
“What’s wrong?” Rachel was close behind him, followed by Mrs. Hills, they too stopped when they saw Zack. The shock was on all their faces. Freya felt the air shift.
“What’s going on?” She asked.
Mrs. Hills ran to Zack and engulfed him in a tight hug, “you’re back, Zack, come in.” she invited between choked sobs.
“Don't! You were disowned, remember?!” Mr. Hills glowered.
"Hugh! It's been years, put that behind-"
Zack turned to his mum “Mum, it's okay, I’m here on business, so I can't really stay. The Council sent me,” he said to her
“Dear this sounds important,” she said to her husband, “It’s the council,” she whispered, they both looked at Rachel and then at Freya.
“Come in,” Mr. Hills said reluctantly “but don’t expect me to be in the same room with you.” he hissed walking towards the stairs and not looking back.
Mrs. Hills led Zack to the dining room where they sat down, Rachel made Freya sit at the other edge with her, Freya could not believe what she had just witnessed at the door.
What could Zack have done to make his own father disown him? She noticed her mum not casting nice looks at Zack either, "It's been a while, Lil bro," Rachel said venomously.
"Don't act like you're any better Rachel, I know what happened," his eyes slid to Freya.
“Zack, what does the council want?” Mrs. Hills asked, breaking the stare-off between siblings.
"I guess you are Valerie?” He asked looking straight at Freya, she nodded, “This is for you.” he said handing out an envelope.
Rachel stops Freya from taking it, “we don’t need it.” she said, Freya looked confused. What the freaking hell was going on?
“Then I’ll read it” Zack rolled his eyes, opening the letter.
Dear Freya Valerie Hills,
You are to return to Casterlot immediately as you have been admitted into Hexlock Academy for Training of Magical Crafts. Being a Magical Element you'll be closely monitored and resistance will be met with punishment.
Yours
The Supreme Court.
“She can't go to some school we can barely afford!” Rachel snapped, "It's absurd, and what's this thing about punishment if she doesn't leave."
“The Council will handle everything. In regards to the punishment thing, considering the nature of her birth they're being lenient.” He replied coldly
“Then she’s not going!”
“Wait, isn’t this my decision?” Freya said, "And what's this about magic??”
“It’s not your choice," Rachel spat sharply.
“Don’t be jealous because you never had the opportunity.” Zack scoffed, "That's why you marr-"
"No one wants you here, Zack! You can tell the council they are not getting their hands on her, not after what they put us through!” Rachel screamed at him furiously. Freya's jaw dropped, she had never seen her mother so angry. Rachel gritted her teeth, trying to keep herself in check, "Please, just leave, Freaky has a life here she loves and a school she's going to enjoy right after this summer ends."
“Not as much as she’ll love Hexlock, I went there, you know?” Zack said calmly.
“Yeah rub it in, no one cares you’re a wiz-" Rachel stooped herself from saying the last word.
“Were you about to say wizard?” Freya guessed, mouth still open in shock as she was trying to piece everything she had heard together.
“Wait, so the girl doesn't know?” Zack asked surprised.
“Don’t you dare say a thing to her” Rachel said dragging Freya out of the kitchen, and pushing her out the door.
Freya put her ear to the wooden surface, straining to hear the conversation, “Zack get out of here,” she heard her mum say
“Rachel you can’t hide it forever,” Zack shot back, agitation creeping into his voice.
“I would've if you didn’t come back for that long!”
The next thing Freya heard was an explosion, she ran in, “What’s going on?” She asked and saw Zack pointing a wand at her mum, who was holding a necklace around her neck, whatever spell he cast had been deflected to the door which was smoldering where it was hit.
“Zack? Did you just try to hurt your own sister?!” Mrs. Hills shrieked, "What are you a child?!" She grabbed him by the shoulders shaking him roughly.
Rachel noticed Freya staring at the door, "Freya, dear, just come with me.”
Freya could not just believe what had just happened, she stepped back out through the door, she needed time to process all this.
“I-I've got to meet up with Jace,” she said and ran out the front door.
Freya walked briskly down the sidewalk, trying to clear her mind.
“Sorry about that!” she heard someone scream behind her.
She looked back - Zack was right behind her, she kept some distance between them, “What’s going on?”
“Walk with me kid,” he replied reaching for her arm but she pulled away, gaze warily glaring.
"You almost did something to my mum, how do I know you won't try to hurt me?" She asked, beginning to see why almost everyone didn't like him.
That seemed to give Zack a pause, he pulled out his wand and handed it over. Freaky stared, reaching out a tentative hand to take the object.
"I don't have an excuse for what happened back there, I lost control but now I want you to trust me," he stepped back, "What do you say now? A talk just between the two of us?"
Kira stared at him, then down at the stick-like object in her hold. Jace was going to be so mad she was late.
