"Kane! Are we gonna play hide and seek today?"
"No. You always win!"
You smile, giggling. "I'm just that lucky."
Kane rolls his eyes, grinning. "How about a game of chess?"
You think about it, furrowing your eyebrows and pouting. "Hmm.." Kane looks expectant and you smile. He smiles back and drags you to his house, where you're going to play chess.
"Ugh, you always win!"
Laughing, you shrug, hugging your teddybear close to you. "Luck." You say, smiling.
-------
"What? You're leaving?!
Kane looks down, and closed his eyes, nodding solemnly.
Your eyes tear up and you kneel beside him. "Please no. You promised me we'd be best friends forever!" You raise your hand, showing him your pinky as he opened his eyes. You noticed tears streaming down his face and your tears flowed down, too. He hugs you, tightly and you hug him back as you both sobbed.
"It's a promise I won't ever break. We'll meet again, _________."
*~*~*~*~*~*
AFTER 15 YEARS
READER-CHAN'S POV
We didn't meet at all. I don't believe in promises anymore. And I don't even remember his last name. Only "Kane." But I do believe in my luck. I so happen to be a secretary of the infamous Jones' Company. Alfred Jones' the CEO, and my boss, and well, I'm his favorite. Of course, I'm lucky and I'm having the most wonderful life anyone can have.
"________?" I heard from my Bluetooth.
"Yes, sir?"
"Why do you keep sending me prostitutes?"
I laughed. "They aren't, sir."
"Are you sure? Did you just laugh at me?"
"Yes, sir and no, sir."
"You did, you little rascal. Hey, get off me--DUDETTE I SAID NO! Wait don't touch that!"
I grin. "Do you need any assistance?"
"Hell yeah! Get this girl away from me! She's totally obsessed!"
I nod, pushing back my chair. "Right away sir." And he stopped replying as I run towards his office. I open it and saw that the girl was on his lap and my boss looked really stressed. He looked at me and glared, pointing at the girl who was hugging him so tight.
I pull the girl off of him and glared at the girl who was struggling. "You were here to get in the job, not to get in his pants."
I heard my boss clap. "Good job. NOW PLEASE KICK HER OUT OF HERE!"
I nodded. "Will do." I closed the door and called security. They quickly got in time and really, literally kicked her ass out of here. I grinned and heard from a co-worker that my boss wanted me to meet him. I sighed. He'll probably scold me again for this. I sigh again and open the door to his office. He was glaring at me when I came in and I smiled sheepishly but he's not amused. Oh no.
"I told you to get me proper women!" He shouts, pouting.
"Sure, the girl was pretty but seriously, I don't need any whores in here." He added.
I sighed, cracking a smile, and stood next to him. "I'm sorry, sir. I didn't know she'd be that desperate."
He groans and rolls his chair. "Ugh, whateeeeeveeeeeeeeer."
I smile and looked at my wristwatch. I sighed and started getting his scattered papers on the floor, checking them and arranging them properly. I put it in the folder and gave it to him. He raises his eyebrow but accepts it anyway, putting it back on the table. I shake my head, frowning. I gave it back, and forced him to hold it.
"We have a private meeting with the Kirkland Company. They ought to be here in two hours. You might as well re-read the contract." I flinched at this but kept my composure right and smiled at my boss. Luckily, he didn't see it.
He groans. "Is this because I signed the contract? Oh my gooooosh. Can we cancel it and move it to another day?"
I sighed. "Even though you make your own hours, with all due respect, sir, I think that would be a bad first impression, now wouldn't it?"
He claps his hand, grinning. "Aha! And that's where you're wrong! It's our second time meeting!"
I shake my head, smiling. I don't know whether to tell him now or let him be surprised. But I'm a secretary and I don't want to be wrong, and it being said by my boss. So I might as well tell him. He looks at me, expecting a comeback and I grinned, knowing well he wasn't ready for it. I turned around and walked towards the door. He's not speaking and I turn around to see him grinning smugly. I grinned back with same smug as his.
"You'll be meeting his son." I left his office and heard a really nice and loud, "WHAT?!"
Half an hour later, I saw seamstresses going in his office. I grinned, knowing well he ordered for a new suit to impress the CEO's son. God, that's funny. After another half an hour, he called me and I smirked, knowing that he needed my assistance. I still answered, not heading to his office immediately.
"Yes, sir?"
"Get your ass in here."
I laughed. "Right away, sir."
I got up and went to his office. Opening the door, I saw the worst fashion he ever had. He turns around and smiles sheepishly at me. "Is this cool?" He's wearing a sleeveless colorful shirt and jeans. I sigh, defeated and he looks at me, knowing what was wrong. He still smiles though.
"Too casual?"
I nodded. "Too casual."
I shooed the seamstresses and went to his private closet in his office. He frowns, stepping off the chair, and follows me.
"You don't need new clothes," I say and took out a suit, black coat and white long-sleeved shirt. I also took out pants. He looks at it and frowns. He's picky, but this is how you dress up for meetings. Does he not know? I huffed, smiling.
"Here," I shove it on his chest. I look at him, stern. "Wear it." He nods, a lot and I went out. After a few minutes, I got called in again and I didn't answer, just going straight to his office. I saw that it was mess. His tie wasn't properly tied and his cuffs weren't folded neatly. I shook my head, sighing. I already feel tired, my god.
I go to him and he has his puppy eyes on already. I rolled my eyes.
"This," I start, unknotting his tie and tying it properly. "is why men," I continued but stopped when I unfolded his cuffs and straightened it out. "Need wives." I finished and patted his shoulder, grinning at my work. He rolls his eyes at my comment. I then frowned when I noticed his hair was a mess. He stays there while I got his hair wax. I stepped on the chair and put a lot of wax on my hand, rubbing my hands together and putting it on his hair.
I made it slicked back to make his appearance to attract attention. Not that it didn't attract any. Actually, many girls would've—wait, no, have fantasized this guy right here.
"There, all done!"
He faces the full-body mirror, grinning at himself, turning around to see his back. He whistles and I put my hands on my hips, grinning proudly.
"What would I do if you weren't here, ________?"
He asked when we left his office, towards the meeting room. I opened the door and grinned. "Probably dead."
He whistles, grinning. "Damn, _________, back again with the comebacks."
I rolled my eyes, smiling. "Don't. Just sit tight there and we'll wait for them."
He slouches in his chair. I knew he didn't like waiting but that's a bad manner. I slap his shoulder and he flinches in pain. "Ow! What the hell!" I smile but it's tight and stern. I look at him. "Sit properly and wait for them with patience." He sighs and nods, sitting up properly, resting his hands on the table.
As soon as we heard the door open, we stood up. But Alfred almost tripped on air and I held him there, hoping they didn't see him trip.
A man with thick eyebrows and blonde hair came in with guards and other workers.
He smiles at Alfred. "Ah, you must be Jones," he reaches out his hand, "I am—"
Alfred cuts in, grabbing the blonde's hand quickly, "—the most beautiful thing on Earth."
The blonde blushed. And so does Alfred.
My jaw dropped and I facepalmed.
This meeting will be long.
~~~~~~
"He totally likes me."
"Alfred. Shut up."
"No, seriously, dude! He likes me! He likes me."
I groaned. "Alfred, sir, please. You're actually gay?" I asked him.
He shrugs, grinning. "I'm bi."
I sigh. "Well, if he likes you then that's good for the company."
He shakes his head. "Not only the company! But me, too!"
He then hugs me. "THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FORCING ME TO SIGN THE DAMN CONTRACT! Now, I've found my soulmate!"
I push him off of me, laughing. "Whatever you say, sir."
He grins. "Seriously, you were made to be my secretary! You're my lucky star!" He then proceeds to his office, jumping and shouting in glee.
I grin. "Yeah, just my luck."
~~~~~~
"Hey, so we're going to have this costume party to celebrate our collaboration with the Kirklands tomorrow night. You'll come, right? I need my lucky star!"
I smile. "Yeah, yeah. I'll come." I then looked at him, confused. "But why costume party?" He grins down at me.
"I might thought it'd be interesting if it was like that. Arthur said yes."
I shake my head, laughing. I smiled at him and he smiles back. "Calling each other in first names, huh?" He shrugged again, smiling so big I think his mouth might break and his cheeks. But I think he's fine. "Arthur suggested it." I wiggle my eyebrows, grinning at him and he blushes, losing his composure as he scratches the back of his neck.
"Shut up, ________."
"I didn't say anything~!"
He groans and glares at me. "Look, are you coming or not?!"
I laugh. "I just told you, I will!"
He nods meekly and leaves me alone. I can't help but be happy for him. That Kirkland guy might be good for him. I'll just wait and see if he's that good at taking care of Alfred. I push back my chair, and sighed, yawning as I got my things and put it in my bag. I yawned again and went in Alfred's office. He's still looking at some papers and he looks serious. I mutter that I'll be leaving and he nods, waving me off with a smile and a goodbye. I nodded and said my goodbyes to my co-workers.
As I left the building, I stretched and yawned. "Such a long day..." I smiled. "But a good one."
I got a cab and told him to head to the most famous costume shop. I was left to an anime store and I facepalmed. The driver must've been a freaking cosplayer. I looked next to the side of the anime store and found a costume store. I immediately brighten up. I ran to the store and went in, looking around for a good costume. I looked at the various and different costumes and my shoulders sag and my smile turned into a frown.
What the hell was the theme?! He didn't tell me!
I groaned and called Alfred, hoping he'd pick up.
"Hello?" His voice was rough and pure of tiredness. I sigh, because I caught him in a bad time.
"Sorry for calling you when you're busy. I just wanted to ask the theme of the costume party?"
I asked and there was a sigh. I feel so bad for him. So instantly backed out, "But you can just tell me—"
"Ballroom. Something like Cinderella?"
"Cinderella?" I asked and I mentally facepalmed because I ask too many freaking questions. I'm just really curious.
"Yeah, Arthur said it'd be charming so we went with it. Make sure you have a mask!"
"Alright," I bit my lip from asking and smiled. "Thanks."
"No problem." He hangs up.
A masked-costume party. Wow. That Arthur guy must've been a fan of fairy tales or something. I sigh and looked around for the perfect ballroom dress. None of them caught my interest until the caliber girl came to me, smiling and asking me what I was looking for. I must've been looking for a while now that she noticed me, I blushed, embarrassed. I started talking about the theme and she led me in the dresses storage.
She showed a beautiful blue dress. And I stop.
"Is that Cinderella's dress? A copy?" I asked her and she nodded, smiling.
She hasn't been speaking to me so she must be mute. I looked at it, awed and I grinned. It's so beautiful but I wonder if it fits me. I pout, imagining myself in the dress as she holds it out for me. I smile at her and took it from her. "Mind if I try it on?" She shakes her head and I smile as she smiles back. I went into the dressing room and started to change in the dress. I look at the full-body mirror, smiling as I sway and look at the dress more.
It fits me.
I walk out and she claps, gasping at me. I blush and sheepishly laugh. "Uh, can I have a matching mask? If there's one?"
She quickly scrambles to her feet and looked around for masks. After a while of watching her, she finally found one and came to me. It's light blue and with glitters and a little feather. Also you wear it, you don't hold it and I'm so thankful for that. I don't want to hold the mask for an hour at most.
I pay for it and she smiles. She wrote on a paper that she decreased the amount of the dress for me.
I grinned and walked out of the store, exhausted and satisfied.
~~~~~~
"Hey, I heard there's a costume party at your company, hm?"
I grinned as soon as Elizabeth greeted me with the question. She's crossing her arms and tapping her foot, impatient for my answer. And then, I see her narrowing her eyes at the dress I've bought. I laugh at her and pushed my way in our apartment. She lets me in and closed the door. "Why didn't you tell me?!" She screams and I laugh, shaking my head at her. I go to my room and she follows me. I put my dress in my bed gently.
"Didn't your boss tell you? And besides," I put up my bag, "I just got home!"
She nods, pouting. She's about to speak but the door slammed open and Elizabeth looked back. I sideways looked at the door and both of us know who was it. The girl grinned and shouted, "I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU GIRLS!" I cringe at the voice of Maria, sighing afterwards. She's still grinning and I massage my temples. Elizabeth looks excited by the news while I, on the other hand, already know what she's about to say.
"There's this costume party—" as soon as Elizabeth heard it, I joined her as we both said, "Yeah, we know."
Maria's smile didn't waver. "Alright, that's good then." She looks at me, smirking and pointing. "You," she drops her bag on my bed and hold my shoulders, "are not going to work tomorrow." She finishes and Elizabeth and her fist bump. I glared at her, somehow shocked at the both of them. I crossed my arms and pout. "Why not?"
Elizabeth scoffs. "Because, helloooooo miss workaholic," she turns to Maria to let her continue. Maria beams and it's so bright. "You need a day without work aaaaaaand..." Maria and Elizabeth holds each other's hands, grinning at me and making those puppy eyes. "Shopping for our dresses!" My jaw dropped but I quickly closed it. I frowned and shook my head in disapproval.
"Hell no."
They glared at me back. "You already shopped without us and you're going with us tomorrow!" Elizabeth says and Maria suddenly disappears but I could careless. I fall into my bed, sighing but still shaking my head. "No, guys. I still have some work to do and—" I stop as soon as I heard Maria talking to someone on the phone.
"Oh hello, kuya (brother)! Yes, I'm fine. But I just wanted to borrow ________ tomorrow? What? No, I'm not stealing your lucky star, kuya (brother), just borrowing. So? Okay lang, di ba? (It's okay, right?)" I tuned her out as I almost grasped the phone but Elizabeth hold me back. I struggled and I heard more from her. Maria's smirking.
"Sige na, kuya! (Please, brother!) You've seen her working so hard. Hindi na ba okay yun? (Is it not enough?) Give her some time off!" I groaned at that statement. I don't need some time off from work at all. I can handle it!
"Alfred—" I was shushed by Elizabeth and I glared at her, I licked her hand and she shivered in disgust but she seemed to handle it pretty calmly. I sat on my bed, watching Maria talk to Alfred, defeated.
"Saan? (Where?) Bakit? (Why?) Sama ka sa shopping namin? (You want to go shopping with us?) Hindi pala eh! (So it's a no!) Okay? Okay na? (It's okay?) Oh my god, thanks kuya (brother)! I love you! YOU'RE THE BEST BROTHER AND HERO EVER! BYE!"
Maria hang up and Elizabeth dashed to the kitchen, washing her hands. I sighed. "You bitch. That was a low blow, calling him a hero." Maria looked at me, grinning or more like smirking at me. She knew how that word affected Alfred, we all knew. And she just had to say it.
"Oh honey, you love me."
Ugh.
~~~~~~
"I am so sorry, Al."
"Oh ew, don't call me that. And 'sides, it's fine. You do need a little time off of work, y'know? Now, go enjoy! I'm having a date in an hour and—"
I glare at the mirror. "Can you handle it?"
"Pfft, hell yeah I can."
I was silent and I heard a curse from him. I sighed. "Okay, where're you going?"
"Uh, a restaurant. Not that expensive. Just casual..."
I stared at myself in the mirror blankly. I sighed again. "Please don't tell me you're wearing the shirt and the shorts from the past day." There's some shuffling and another curse.
"Uh...no?"
"Oh my god."
"_______! What's taking you so long in the bathroom?!"
I lean away from my phone and covering it as I shouted, "Fuck off! I'm busy!"
I waited for an answer but no one answered so I nodded and went back to Alfred. He's blabbering and I don't know what he's saying. I coughed, clearing my throat and it caught his attention.
"Look, calm down. And no, don't wear a suit. Just wear a polo."
"Polo? Where is it?"
I sighed. "Look at the end of the closet."
There's some shuffling again and I can hear him looking for it. I heard him shout in delight and I smiled, knowing that he found those.
"Okay, red or blue?"
I facepalmed. "Are you serious?!" There's a whine and I punch the bridge of my nose. I have a headache now.
Instead of answering, he was silent at the other line and I huffed. "Blue. Wear blue. It brings out your eyes."
"Okay~!"
He seems happy. I nodded. Sighing. "Okay, so that's it. Just please let Gianna do the cuff folding and—"
"Shoes?"
I stopped from opening the door of the bathroom. I frowned. "Are you fucking kidding me?"
"Hey! No swearing at the boss, dude!"
"________! I KNOW YOU DON'T WANT TO GO BUT YOU ALREADY AGREED TO THIS!"
I sighed. "Please call Gianna!" I said hurriedly.
"Gianna! Yo! Francis' kid!"
"I AM NOT FRANCIS' KID, SIR!"
I wait for a while, letting Gianna grumble. Finally she greeted me and I greeted back, a smile finding its way on my lips. Alfred might be helpless without me but Gianna's there so maybe, just maybe, Gianna can help.
"Please give him the shoes I ordered for him a while ago."
"Ah! Yes, alright."
I smiled. "Thanks, Gia. Oh, and please tell him that he needs to calm down. Also, buy roses. No chocolates. Also, act like a gentleman. Don't be rude. Give a little space if uncomfortable with public affections. And keep the PDA to a minimum. Also, just be yourself. Stay on the topic unless you find it uncomfortable, share your feelings too. But have more action than words and—"
"Yes, ________, ma'am. I'll do those. Thanks, dude!"
I smile, laughing at myself. "You're very welcome, sir."
"Wait! One more thing!"
There's an annoyed sigh but I let him be. "Do not wear contacts. Put jel on your hair, sideways."
"Okay, okay mom."
I laughed. "Just taking care of you, son."
"Ew, I'm older than you."
I laughed harder. "You were the one who called me 'mom'!"
"Whatever! Thanks again, bye!"
"Bye.." I say and hang up. I'm worried for him. I wonder where they'll have dinner?
"__________!"
"OKAY!" I shout back, frowning. I opened the door and saw two impatient little shits. I smiled nervously but they just scoffed at me and they both dragged me outside. I made sure everything was off and plugged off. I also made sure that the door was locked. They all told me that it'll be fine so I just sighed, defeated yet again.
I smiled, shaking my head with a fond smile as I watch them looking at all the shops. I hold their hands, grinning.
"Let's go girls."
And we started the hunt.
