Recap:
Alpha Prince Mattias falls for beta Lukas but finds that Lukas suffers from a condition known as "Frost" which makes it so that he becomes cold and falls into a deep slumber during heat and if he were to mate then he would fall into an even deeper and longer slumber from which he may never wake up. And if he doesn't fall into a deep slumber, then no one can touch his skin or be around him without freezing, making it difficult for Lukas to have children. Even though Lukas seems to have given up hope on curing himself, Mattias vows to find a cure.
Narrator's POV
"My, you are determined to cure this beta." The king commented as he watched Mattias search through book after book of the royal library.
"Yeah, I want him to be free of his Frost." Mattias said as he flipped through the book. The king nodded.
"Hmm, you said that right now it lasts only as long as his heat right?" The king asked. Mattias nodded. "Well, since it's been a week, he probably woke up, so why not bring him here? The healers and magicians of the palace might be able to do something for the poor lad." The king suggested. Mattias looked up and grinned.
"Definitely! That's an awesome idea!" Mattias said, bounding over to his father and hugging him. The king chuckled as his son went off to fetch his cloak and horse before setting off.
"That boy's in love alright." The king said to himself as he dusted a book off before looking inside and giving a slight smile.
------------------------
"Lukas~!" Mattias said as he launched himself at the still waking male. Lukas groaned and looked up at the heavily bundled Dane who was on his chest.
"What are you doing here?" Lukas said in his monotone voice before yawning. Mattias sat up.
"I want to take you to the palace." Mattias said. Lukas raised an eyebrow.
"Don't tell me you're still trying to find a cure for something that can't be cured." Lukas said, sitting up. Mattias remained resolute.
"I'm gonna find a cure and I'm taking you with me, whether you cooperate or not." Mattias said determinedly. Lukas stared at him for a moment before sighing.
"Very well, just let me go get dressed." Lukas said, getting up from his nest and proceeding downstairs as Mattias happily followed behind like a puppy.
As soon as Lukas was ready, Mattias helped him onto Peggy and then sat behind Lukas, grabbing the reins and beginning the ride through the forest and back to the castle. All throughout the trip Mattias kept Lukas close, enjoying the scent of the beta and even the cool air which radiated off Lukas.
As they neared the castle, Lukas pulled his hood up, trying to hide his face. Once inside the palace walls, Mattias helped Lukas off Peggy and dragged him inside the palace, Lukas feeling uncomfortable at the way the guards all stared at his cloaked form.
"Prince Mattias," A messenger said. "Your father wishes to see you and meet your guest. He is in his private study." Mattias nodded and headed for the study as he dragged Lukas behind him.
Eventually they made it to the study where the king was sitting in a chair by the fire. He greeted the duo and motioned to the couch where the two sat.
"So this is the infamous Lukas?" The king asked teasingly. Lukas nodded, removing his hood. The king studied him.
"My goodness, Mattias your description was spot on." The king said. Mattias grinned. The king then turned to Lukas. "I know this may be hard for you to answer, but could you tell me how you contracted Frost. I already know how it works, but getting it is something I do not know of." Lukas sighed.
"Very well." Lukas said. "There are two ways to get Frost; be cursed or take it from someone else. I took it from someone else." Lukas stated. The king raised an eyebrow.
"You willingly took this curse from another? You must really care for them." The king observed. Lukas nodded.
"I do. You see, I actually have a younger brother, an omega, who fell in love with a beta from a prestigious family, but that beta had already been betrothed to an alpha." Lukas said. "But the beta also loved my brother dearly and even if I did not particularly like that beta, he did make my brother happy. So in order to be together, the beta refused to marry the alpha and instead introduced my brother to his family. His family was pleased with my brother and at the prospect that the beta would be the dominate one in a relationship that he wanted to be in, instead of being forced into a marriage that would make him miserable. So they gave their blessings." The king nodded.
"And I assume the alpha wasn't too happy." The king said. Lukas nodded.
"Indeed, he was not. We all agreed he was mad with jealousy." Lukas said. "A month after my brother and the beta had mated, things were going well till the alpha appeared and attacked my brother. And though my brother was unharmed at first, we soon found out he had been cursed with Frost." Lukas said sadly.
"How'd you find out?" Mattias asked. Lukas looked down.
"A few weeks later my brother began complaining about feeling cold and started to become more and more exhausted till he collapsed when his heat was supposed to start. For a week his body was colder than ice, freezing anyone who tried to touch him. And no matter what we did, he wouldn't wake up. Once his heat period was over, he woke up but was still cold and falling asleep often. This went on for a few months, all of us worried." Lukas said before looking up again. "For weeks I spent time researching with my friends for a cure and finally, we diagnosed his condition as Frost and discovered the only way to free my brother of it." Lukas said.
"And that was by passing it onto another, correct?" The king asked. Lukas nodded.
"Yes, but no one was willing to take the curse, only the beta, my brother's mate, but my brother refused to pass it to him, just as I and my friends refused as well. So, left with no other option and not wanting my brother to suffer any longer, I took the curse for myself." Lukas said, looking at his gloved hands.
"Was it successful?" The king asked.
"Yes, it was," Lukas said. "I apparently collapsed on the ground of the bedroom, going into the Frost form of heat when my brother awoke, cured, and called for the others. For two weeks I was out cold, and when I woke up, everyone berated and yet thanked me for what I had done."
"And after that? How did you end up in Frost Forest?" The king questioned. Lukas sighed.
"After that, I noticed how much stress I put on everyone by being constantly cold. It got to the point that even in summer, people in the house would be wearing winter clothing. Wanting to no longer be a burden, I packed only the essentials and left, leaving only an apology note behind. Then I wandered for a bit till I met a few magical creatures who led me to Frost Forest where the other creatures there accepted me and let me live there peacefully." Lukas finished. The king nodded as Mattias placed a comforting hand on Lukas's.
"I see, I can imagine that that must've been tough on both you and Emil." The king said. Lukas nodded.
"Yes it-" Lukas stopped and stared at the king. "How did you-"
"Emil is the name of your brother correct?" The king asked with a knowing smile. He then added, "And Leon is the beta from the story as well." Lukas's jaw tightened as he nodded stiffly.
"Then we should be calling you Prince Lukas." The king said as Mattias gasped.
"Wait you're the missing crown prince from Norseland?!" He asked. Lukas nodded stiffly.
"Yes, I am." Lukas said bitterly. He then stood up. "But the way I am now, I'd only hurt the kingdom rather than help it." The king nodded.
"Yes, but please sit and listen to what I have to say, and if you still wish, you may return to Frost Forest and my lips along with everyone here who knows of you will be sealed." The king said. Lukas thought for a moment before nodding.
"Very well." He said, sitting down again.
"Now that we know your true identity, why not tell the missing part of the story?" The king said. Lukas nodded and looked back down.
"After I received the curse and noticed the burden I was being on the kingdom, I asked to leave, to hand the throne to Leon and Emil to go live somewhere far off and distant, where I would be a burden to no one."
"And naturally as a magic user, prodigy, and a favorite for the throne, your parents and most of the kingdom refused." The king stated.
"Yes," Lukas answered. "And by force, locking me in the palace, saying that curse or not, I could not leave the kingdom. For 6 months I was trapped, constantly and closely being monitored and watched. And the worse part of the situation was that the servants and guards became ill and often froze by getting to close. And the Frost began to affect my own magic, amplifying the cold I gave off, hurting those around me. I ordered Emil and Leon as well as many to keep a distance. And many did so, but others were forced to keep close and suffer the consequences. It was after one soldier had perished from my coldness that I could no longer take it and stole away in the night. The rest I already told you." Lukas finished. The king thoughtfully nodded.
"Indeed and thank you for indulging this old man." The king said. He then stood up and stood before the two on the couch. "And now, I would like to offer a proposition." Lukas raised an eyebrow.
"What proposition?" Lukas questioned. The king walked over to the fire.
"Tell me Mattias, did you know that when you were about three you had been betrothed to another?" The king asked. Mattias wore a confused look.
"Yeah to like some beta that like died five years ago right?" Mattias asked. The king nodded.
"Indeed, which is why these past few years I've been trying to find another to take their place, but I feel I should tell you the truth about what happened to that beta."
"The truth?" Mattias questioned.
"Yes the truth," The king replied. "Your fiance disappeared in the night, a fellow royal, is that not right Prince Lukas?" The king said, grinning at Lukas. Lukas's eyes widened as he turned to Mattias.
"You were my betrothed?" Mattias questioned as he looked from Lukas to his father who chuckled.
"Yes, you two were betrothed when you were both young, often visiting each other when you were young and getting along well. Though that stopped when you two became ten or eleven and began learning how to govern a kingdom. But when I found out you had disappeared, well, knowing you knew magic, I assumed the marriage was off and canceled the agreement with your parents to unite the two kingdoms." The king admitted. The two princes were silent at the revelation before-
"That's awesome!" Mattias said as he held Lukas close. "I knew you were the one for me when I met ya!" Mattias exclaimed as Lukas blushed lightly before pushing him away.
"Yes, but remember, I can't mate nor produce any heirs." Lukas pointed out. Mattias pouted as the king nodded.
"Yes, not without passing the curse onto another." The king said. Lukas looked at him before his eyes widened slightly.
"No, you don't mean to say-"
"Oh but I do," The king said, cutting Lukas off. "As much as I hate to admit it, my time on this earth is coming to a close and before I go, I'd like to see my son happily settled and do some good before I go." The king then walked over to Lukas and held his hands.
"If you are willing to go through with the old engagement, I'll take the curse from you. My mate, the Queen, has long since passed so I'm done going through heat, so I will not really suffer any more than an unmated, non-magical person who had Frost would normally." The king said. Lukas stared at him as tears began to form.
"..." Lukas couldn't bring himself to speak as Mattias hugged him, rubbing circles on his back.
"Hey Lukas," Mattias said, lifting Lukas's chin up and looking into his eyes. "Will you marry me?" Mattias asked as he looked at Lukas with loving eyes. Lukas's tears spilled over as he let his emotions go.
"I do. I do." Lukas said as he hugged Mattias. Mattias hugged back and kissed Lukas, not minding the feeling of his lips freezing. The king hummed in delight.
"Excellent. Now I think we should probably contact your family. I know your brother and his mate have been very adamant along with your friends about searching for you." The king suggested. Lukas nodded as the king handed him a piece of paper and a quill. The king then glanced at Mattias who ran out of the room.
Once Lukas was done with the letter, Mattias returned and looked to his father who smiled and nodded before taking out a box and opening it, presenting the ring to Lukas.
"It's been passed down for generations to every Queen in the family." Mattias said. Lukas gave a small smile as he held out his hand, taking the glove off. Mattias grinned as he slipped the ring on and kissed Lukas once more as the king took the letter and walked out of the room.
The king walked over to a messenger and said,
"Please send this letter to Prince Emil and Prince Leon of Norseland as well as send out invitations to a wedding." The messenger nearly fainted before nodding his head and running down the hall yelling,
"The prince is getting married!"
The king chuckled as he went off to start planning for the wedding he thought would never be.
"But fate works in mysterious ways." He said to himself.
------------------ Time Skip To Wedding Day ------------------
"I can't believe this is actually happening." Emil said as he helped Lukas get ready. Lukas nodded.
"I know, I can not believe I am getting married nor that the curse will be lifted from me." Lukas said. Emil looked down before hugging Lukas.
"Thanks for... you-know-what... big brother." Emil said softly. Lukas gave a ghost of a smile and hugged back.
"What are big brothers for? And because of that I have a cute nephew." Lukas said as they broke from the hug and Leon walked forward with their young infant son.
"Yeah, and don't forget to give us a little niece or nephew as well." Leon said. Lukas nodded as he made his way out the door and to the ceremony where he stood at the altar with Mattias who was grinning like an idiot.
It felt like in an instant the ceremony was over and the two were sharing a cool kiss before heading to the reception where Lukas and Mattias danced with each other for so long and received the congratulations from friends and family alike, both happy for Lukas and Mattias, as well as for the two kingdoms.
Eventually the clock struck and it was time for the king to take the curse from Lukas. Lukas hugged the king tightly as Mattias did the same while the king lay on what was likely to be his deathbed.
"Just be happy you two, and give me plenty of grandchildren." The old king said with a smile. Mattias nodded as he pulled Lukas close.
"Plenty~" He said, causing Lukas to halfheartedly elbow him in the gut. The king chuckled and held his hands out to Lukas.
"Take good care of him and yourself." The king said. Lukas gave a ghost of a smile and nodded.
"I will, and thank you again." Lukas said. The king smiled back and nodded as he closed his eyes and let Lukas chant.
Mattias watched as a white light enveloped Lukas's body before enveloping the king's. After Lukas was done chanting, he let go of the king's hands and stumbled back, taking a sharp breathe. Mattias immediately caught him, feeling Lukas's skin beginning to warm up before they both turned to the peacefully sleeping king.
"Is he...?" Mattias questioned nervously. Lukas placed a hand on the king's hand before withdrawing.
"He's alive, but..."
"But what?"
"But the curse... it doesn't seem to be working." Lukas said in disbelief. Mattias frowned and placed a hand on the king's before withdrawing.
"You're right! If anything he feels warmer!" Mattias said. He then shook the king who woke up and yawned.
"Hmm? What is... wait a moment, why am I not feeling cold?" He asked. Lukas shook his head.
"I know not but I think we should be thankful." Lukas said, holding the king's hand. The king understood and smiled before shooing them from his room.
"Now go on you two to your love nest and get started on those grand kiddies for me." He said with a laugh. Both blushed but Mattias grinned and picked Lukas up bridal style, carrying him into their shared bedroom and then into the nest that that two of them had built.
"Ready elsker?" Mattias said, placing Lukas into the plush nest. Lukas lightly blushed and pulled Mattias close by his tie, partially choking him.
"Shut up and kiss me you stupid Dane." Lukas said as Mattias grinned and did just that.
