Narrator's POV
Sunrise and sunset, two very different times of day, each liked and disliked by different people.
To those that lived in the dark, sunset was their time to be happy, happy for another day of life, while those that lived in the light feared it and what lurked in the darkness that came after.
To those of the light, sunrise was a time to be happy, happy for a day they found themselves doing what they loved, while those of that lived in the dark shunned and hated it, as it mocked them, showing them the things they could never have.
Right now, Francois was waiting for the sun to rise, begging for it to rise, rise with hope for a new future, for a new day, for a chance to be with the person he was meant to be with.
How God seemed to hate him right now, denying him such a simple request, as well as the situation Francois now found himself in;
Sitting in his office, hearing a report from his second-in-command, Louis, about a recent shoot-out between his men and some rival punks.
"Repeat zhat last sentence." Francois said, breathing out cigarette fumes.
"In short, we won, at the cost of three men killed, two men injured, and [name] critically wounded." Louis said. Francois sighed, covering his eyes with his hand.
"'er condition?" He asked. Louis nodded, looking down at a piece of paper.
"Two bullets passed through her left shoulder, another through her right thigh, a bullet through her left rib, one through her left lung, and one lodged dangerously close to her heart." Louis said. "She is currently in surgery."
'God certainly 'ates moi...'
"Sir, may I be blunt?" Louis, said.
"Be brief." Francois said.
"Sir, she's your soulmate, and yes, I can tell but no one else knows." Louis said, answering Francois before he could even ask.
"So what do you suggest I do?" Francois asked, knowing his second-in-command all too well.
"Let me ask you a question in exchange for an answer," Louis said cryptically. "What did your father do to your mother?"
"A lot," Francois said, recalling how his parents had a rocky relationship at best. Francois's father tried his best to woo his mother, gaining her affection and love easily, and yet his mother belonged to light, while his father to darkness, and she was very, very unwilling to leave the light.
"... So you suggest zhat I be exactly like my father?" Francois asked. Louis shrugged.
"On one hand you gain that which you desire yet you lose it too. But if you let things persist as they are now, you will never gain anything but lose everything." Louis said with a shrug. "In either sense you lose, but in the option your father took, you at least make sure she lives."
"..." Francois remained silent, brooding over the idea that was just suggested.
"And I feel," Louis said, moving a bit closer to Francois. "That I should add that [name] is very, very different from your mother; she shuns the light, unlike your mother who shunned darkness." And Francois had to admit; he agreed with that statement.
"... Alright..." Francois said, standing from his seat. "Get zhe zhings prepared and I will meet you zhere." Louis nodded giddily before heading out the door, leaving Francois to his thoughts as he watched the last bits of light fade out from the setting sun.
----------------------------
You woke up in an unfamiliar room, far too lavish for your tastes; It was a grand bedroom decorated in black and red with a large canopy bed.
"I see you woke up," A familiar voice said. You turned your head, knowing all too well that it would hurt to sit up. It was then that you saw Francois leaning back on a chair that had been pulled over to the bed.
"How bad is my condition?" You asked. Francois sighed.
"You wake up after being shot and wounded several times over in a strange bedroom, with a strange man, and zhat is what you ask?"
"..." You just gave Francois a blank look, not sure how to answer, making Francois sigh.
"I want you to listen closely to what I am about to tell you, and only you." Francois said, deciding to move on. You nodded. "You are my soulmate." He said simply, leaving you to be silent.
"..."
"'ere, I 'ad Louis bring your necklace from your room." Francois said, pulling out a necklace from his front pocket and tossing it to you. You caught it with ease and easily confirmed that the hot necklace was yours.
"I see..." You said. "And I'll now assume that this is why I am here instead of you telling me I was injured enough to be let go." You said.
"Your mind is only on business, no?" He asked. You nodded.
"Do you know what I am going to do now?" Francois asked. You thought for a moment.
"I can think of several scenarios, but I think it would simply be easier if you tell me." You said bluntly, knowing that out of all the scenarios you had in mind, whatever one he was going to go through with would not involve your head on a platter.
"Alright, I want you to listen to a story zhat I am going to tell you." He said. He leaned forward on his elbows, sighing as his shoulders sagged.
"My father, as you know, was zhe previous leader, and my mother, as you also know, was not in zhe picture zhat much. Zhat is because she was of light, and shunned my father who was of dark." Francois said, his voice monotone.
"Zhat infuriated my father to no ends, especially when she tried to move on. 'e refused to let 'er by locking 'er up, forcing 'er to be 'is." You remained silent, carefully watching Francois.
"'e locked 'er up from zhe worlds of both light and dark, yet from zhat moment on, 'e lost zhe woman 'e loved." Francois said, a touch of bitterness in his voice. "She became a shell of what she was, a doll, if you will. 'e forced 'imself on 'er till she got pregnant with moi." Francois stopped for a moment, clasping his hands together.
"'e tried to show 'er 'is love, showering 'er in everything she could've ever wanted. 'e made so many promises, but nothing worked." Francois said, sighing as he looked down at his hands. "And zhen I was born."
"Something in 'er broke, and she went insane, refusing to be my mother, zhe 'mother of a monster' she never wanted. So father kept 'er locked up even more, and away from moi." Francois said, leaning back as his eyes traveled to the ceiling.
"I was only allowed to see 'er once or twice a year, and each time she tried to attack moi, stating zhat I was zhe child of zhe devil. Father even tried to get 'er pregnant again, hoping zhat maybe she'd get 'er motherly instincts back. Zhat only resulted in 'er terminating zhe pregnancy 'erself." Francois said, sadness heard, though whether for his father or unborn sibling, you couldn't say.
"Needless to say my mother didn't live very long after zhat, 'er attempts to permanently escape succeeding, leaving father saddened greatly, and eventually leading us to where we are now; me in charge and my father dead." Francois finished. You stayed silent. Francois turned to you, giving you a serious, sobering look.
"Do you now know what I am about to do to you?" He asked.
"You are going to ask whether I'll stay with you, and whether I answer yes or no, I will end up here." You said simply. Francois nodded, standing up and moving over to a window.
"Be prepared [name]." He said, going over to the window and pulling the curtains back, revealing the sun just beginning to rise. "Zhis will be zhe last time you see zhe light of day again."
Sunrise and sunset, two very different times of day, each liked and disliked by different people.
Sunsets signifying an end of day, while sunrise signals the start of a new day.
But what people don't realize is that sunrises also signify something else;
The end of the darkness.
