Narrator's POV
"A-a-achoo!"
"Whoa!" Hero said, jumping a bit when he heard his brother sneeze. He turned to see a sniffling Maple.
"S-sorry," Maple said softly, rubbing his nose with his paw as he sniffled. Cesar turned to him, trotting over before gently placing his head against Maple.
"Oh, mon petite bébé is so warm!" Cesar exclaimed, pulling his forehead away from Maple. "Mon petite Maple, 'ow do you feel?"
"C-cold and m-my tummy f-feels kinda f-funny, and m-my nose is s-stuffy," Maple said, sniffling. Cesar tutted.
"Just as I thought, mon petite bébé is sick." Cesar said, gently picking Maple up by the scruff of his collar, trotting over to the large cat bed. Cesar set him down and comfortingly licked his forehead.
"Maple, you stay 'ere and rest while I go tell your father and get our owners to take you to zhe vet." Cesar said. Maple sniffled and nodded, getting comfortable as he curled into a ball.
"O-oui papa," He said softly before coughing. Cesar licked his head again before turning to Hero.
"Hero, I want you to watch your little brother and make sure 'e rests." Cesar said. Hero nodded.
"Sure thing pops." Hero said, taking a seat by the cat bed. Cesar nodded and walked out of the cat room, leaving the two kits alone again. After a moment Maple turned to Hero.
"H-Hero, what's t-the vet l-like?" He asked. Hero shook his head.
"It's a yucky place according to Uncle Whisky," Hero said. "He says it's a place filled with other animals and with humans who poke you and prod you with weird things on their hands and take pictures of your insides and give you yucky tasting drinks. But the worst thing is when they give you things called shots."
"S-shots?"
"Yeah, it's when they poke you with a sharp thing and sometimes take your blood or put some sort of liquid in ya." Hero said, getting a squeak from Maple.
"I-I don't w-wanna get a s-shot!" Maple wailed in terror. Hero jumped onto the bed and nuzzled Maple.
"Don't worry, I'll be your hero!" Hero said, puffing out his chest.
"H-how?" Maple asked, sniffling with tears in his eyes.
"Well, they can't take you to this vet if they can't find you." Hero said.
"O-okay, that m-makes sense." Maple said, sniffling. Hero nodded.
"Yeah, all we gotta do is hide you till you get better and tada! No need to go see the vet and get a shot!" Hero said, hopping off the cat bed. "Now come on." He said. Maple nodded and got off the bed, following his brother out of the cat room and into the place they learned is called a hallway.
"W-where should w-we go?" Maple asked, looking around at all the doors. Hero looked around too till he spotted a partially open door.
"In there!" He said, pointing with his paw. Maple nodded and followed his brother in to the bedroom of one of the children of the house, and judging by the polar bear sitting on the bed, it must've been Matthew's bedroom.
"W-where should w-we hide?" Maple asked, coughing a bit. Hero looked around before spotting a bag [a backpack] near a desk.
"In here looks good." Hero said. Maple nodded and hurried inside, followed by Hero who closed the flap on top. "Okay, we should be safe in here."
"I-I hope s-so," Maple said, snuggling closer to Hero for warmth and comfort. "I-I don't want t-to go t-to see t-the scary v-vet."
"Don't worry Maple, I'll protect ya." Hero said, curling around his brother.
All was silent for a bit till the two heard light footsteps come into the room. They waited as they heard the sounds of someone shuffling around in the room, moving things till finally they arrived at the desk, where Maple began to shift nervously.
Maple whimpered as the bag was lifted up, Hero joining him when the flap of the bag was lifted, revealing a shocked Matthew.
"What a-are you two d-doing in my backpack?" Matthew asked, setting the backpack on the desk, carefully taking the two kittens out. As if to answer his question, Maple sneezed and coughed.
"O-oh dear, are you s-sick Maple?" Matthew asked. Maple whimpered as Hero struggled to get closer to his brother. Matthew shook his head and hurried out of his room and to the kitchen where he saw his father Francis trying to calm a panicking Cesar and Biscuit.
"Papa," Matthew said softly. "I t-think Maple is sick." Matthew said, getting the others' attention. The two cats immediately stopped their distressed meowing and jumped off the table, pawing Matthew's feet as Francis came over, gently taking Maple from Matthew.
"Matthieu, put Hero down," Francis said. Matthew nodded and put Hero down, who was immediately smothered by Biscuit while Cesar went over to Francis, pawing at his feet to try and get to Maple.
"Hmm... I zhink you are right mon petite fleur," Francis said as he examined a sniffling, whimpering Maple. "I zhink zhis little one is sick." He said, gently putting the kit on the kitchen counter where Cesar was quick to go, hurrying over to a distressed Maple.
"W-what should we d-do?" Matthew asked.
"Take 'im to zhe vet I suppose." Francis said, heading over to a nearby closet to get the pet-carriers. "And also take zhe others to zhe vet to make sure zhey aren't sick either." Francis said, getting Hero to meow loudly as Biscuit picked him up by the scruff of his neck and held him in place, preventing him from leaving. Maple, on the other hand, was exhausted as Cesar curled up around him.
"C-Can I help?" Matthew asked.
"Oui, could you put Biscuit and Hero into one carrier, I'll put Cesar and Maple into zhe other." Francis said. Matthew nodded and put the carrier on the ground, allowing Biscuit to go in with a protesting Hero as Francis gently scooped Cesar and Maple into theirs.
"Get in zhe car Matthieu, and I'll join you with zhe cats." Francis said, already carrying the cats to the car and putting them in the back seat with Matthew.
~Meanwhile In The Carriers~
"What were you two bloody thinking?" Biscuit asked. "Do you have any idea how worried we were?"
"N-no vet..." Maple said softly, curling into Cesar's fur. "D-don't want s-scary stuff... o-or ouchies..." He mumbled. Cesar gently licked his fur.
"Why would you zhink zhe vet is scary?" Cesar asked, knowing that neither kitten had been to the vet before.
"B-because H-Hero told m-me... and i-it sounded s-scary..." Maple whimpered. Cesar sighed and shook his head.
"Zhe vet is zhere to 'elp." Cesar said. "Sure zhey do zhings we don't always like, but zhey are only trying to 'elp us and make sure we don't get sick." Cesar explained, getting a snort from Biscuit.
"Of course, it's like when that boy Alfred brushed your furs that one time and it hurt. It only hurt because there were a lot of tangles in it, but if he hadn't brushed it then there would be more tangles and it would've hurt more later." Biscuit explained as he curled around Hero.
"Sorry..." Hero murmured, ears flattening in shame. "I shouldn't have listened to Uncle Whisky..." He said, getting a groan from Biscuit.
"No love, I shouldn't have let your Uncle Whisky near you two till you were a tad older-"
"Or at least 'ad been to zhe vet." Cesar said.
"Yes, or at least after you seen a real vet and made your own opinions." Biscuit said with another groan before gently licking Hero on the head. Cesar nodded.
"Oui, zhat would 'ave been best." Cesar said as Maple coughed a bit.
The group felt the car stop and heard Francis and Matthew get out of the car.
"Matthieu, can you get Biscuit and Hero? I want to take Cesar and Maple." Francis said.
"O-okay Papa." Matthew said, gently picking up Biscuit's cat carrier while Francis was careful with Cesar's and Maple's, not wanting to further distress the sick kitten or the obviously worried parent.
The two carried the cats inside and were quick to get a room. As they waited for the doctor, Francis put the carriers on the examination table and opened the doors, allowing the cats to move about, though Biscuit and Hero were quick to go to Cesar's carrier where Cesar remained curled around Maple who was coughing.
"Papa, I t-think Maple i-is thirsty." Matthew said, looking into the carrier at the coughing kitten. Francis nodded.
"Oui, let me go get a bowl from one of zhe receptionists." He said, walking out of the room and quickly coming back with a water bowl. He filled it with water and left it on the examination table, letting the cats be as he and Matthew waited.
Biscuit nudged Hero over to the water where the two drank and sat by as Cesar brought Maple out, carrying him by the scruff of his neck over to the bowl where Cesar nudged Maple into drinking a few sips, though Maple was quick to stop.
"I-I'm t-tired." Maple whimpered. Biscuit went over to Maple, gently picking him up by the scruff of his neck and heading back into the cat carrier where he put Maple down and curled around him.
"Rest love," Biscuit said, his motherly instincts kicking in as Cesar took over watching Hero. "I'll give you a nudge when the vet comes in." Biscuit said softly as he lightly groomed Maple. Maple cuddled into Biscuit's fur, closing his exhausted eyes. Biscuit breathed a sigh of relief as Maple's breathing evened out a bit, signalling that the poor kit had fallen asleep.
Though this relief turned into annoyance when he heard the door open, revealing the vet.
"Hi everyone, I'm Dr. Tino, now what seems to be the problem?" The cheerful blond said. Francis stood up. [A/N: Yes, I am too lazy to bother writing his last name]
"Well, a few weeks ago zhe two adult cats 'ere," Francis said, motioning to Cesar and Biscuit. "'ad two kittens, and one of zhe kittens appears to be sick." Dr. Tino nodded.
"I see, and which kitten would that be?" He asked.
"Zhe one in zhe carrier with his father, or rather mother, since Biscuit gave birth. Maple's brother, Hero, is 'ere with zheir father Cesar." Francis said. Dr. Tino nodded.
Biscuit sighed, knowing the doctor was going to take Maple out of the carrier, so he nudged his kitten awake, though he'd rather let Maple sleep.
"Hmm?" Maple opened his eyes, sleepily cuddling back into Biscuit's fur.
"Maple, love, the vet wants to examine you." Biscuit said softly, making Maple wake up a bit as he cowered into Biscuit's fur, Dr. Tino already peeking into the carrier.
"I see the little guy. It's his and his brother's first time at the vet, right?" Dr. Tino asked.
"Oui, it is." Francis said. Dr. Tino nodded.
"In that case, I'll give both kittens a once over." Dr. Tino said, putting on a pair of gloves before going back over to the carrier.
"Sorry Mama Biscuit, I gotta take a real quick look at your baby." Dr. Tino said, annoying Biscuit who hissed in displeasure. Francis was quick to stop Dr. Tino from putting his hand into the carrier.
"Ah, Dr. Tino, Biscuit may be zhe one who gave birth but 'e doesn't like to be called 'mama', 'e scratches people who call 'im zhat." Francis said.
"Oh dear! Thank you for telling me." Dr. Tino said, Francis releasing his arm. Dr. Tino turned to the carrier, staring back into a pair rather pissed off green cat-eyes. "Sorry Daddy Biscuit." Dr. Tino said, getting a huff from Biscuit who put his head down, showing he wasn't angry anymore, but his eyes still watched as Dr. Tino gently lifted Maple from the carrier. Maple squirmed lightly and whimpered, not used to Dr. Tino and not feeling well. Biscuit was quick to stand on the edge of the examination table with Cesar, both parents watching Dr. Tino examine Maple.
"Hmm... He's sick alright..." Dr. Tino said. He gently put Maple down behind the two parents, who were quick to surround him, calming the whimpering kitten. Dr. Tino went over to a drawer and took out a thermometer. He then went back over to Maple, gently taking him from his parents, holding him in front of the two adult cats and putting the thermometer into Maple's ear, thankful that Maple didn't squirm around as much, though he continued to whimper.
"Shh, mon petite Maple," Cesar said, gently licking Maple's face to try and calm him.
"It f-feels weird..." Maple whimpered. Hero came over and licked Maple on his cheeks.
"Yeah but Dad said it'll help make you feel better." Hero said. Maple's whimpers quieted down, though he started to whimper loudly when the thermometer beeped in his ear, but Dr. Tino was quick to take it out.
"Yep, he's got a fever alright, which means he needs some medicine." Dr. Tino said, walking over to a drawer and pulling out a light. "Francis, can you help me for a bit?"
"Oui, of course." Francis said.
"Can you hold Maple while I look in his mouth and ears?" Dr. Tino asked. Francis nodded.
"Oui," He said, holding his hands out. He gently held Maple in front of Cesar and Biscuit, both watching the two men like hawks as Dr. Tino looked in both ears with a light.
"No signs of ear infection." He said. He then opened Maple's mouth, and peeked down it. "Hmm... a lot of mucus, probably giving this little guy his coughs, which means he has strep throat." Dr. Tino said.
"Oh dear, zhat's contagious if I'm not mistaken." Francis said. Dr. Tino nodded, letting Francis hold Maple, gently rubbing the poor kit's back.
"Yeah, but don't worry, some medicine along with a shot from here, along with one shot for the other cats, should prevent them from getting sick. Just make sure Maple here rests a lot and eats and drinks from a separate bowl than his parents, since his saliva can make the germs spread to the others." Dr. Tino said. Francis nodded.
"Zhat shouldn't be too 'ard. All four of zhem 'ave zheir own food and drink bowls." Francis said. Dr. Tino nodded.
"That's good, now let me get the shots." He said, walking out of the room. Francis put Maple down by Cesar who began grooming Maple again.
"You did wonderfully mon petite bébé," Cesar said, curling around Maple.
"Papa, I w-wanna s-sleep." Maple whined, feeling exhausted. Biscuit trotted over and took over grooming Maple.
"In a bit love, the vet just needs to give you a shot and-"
"I-is it going t-to hurt?" Maple asked, sniffling. Biscuit sighed and gently nuzzled Maple.
"Just a bit love, and then it's over rather quickly." He said. Maple still cowered a bit.
Dr. Tino came back, four shots in hand. He put also brought a pair of thick gloves.
"Mind helping me again Francis?" Dr. Tino asked. "I just need you to hold them while I give them the shot. And don't worry, I brought these gloves so they can't scratch you." He said. Francis nodded.
"I don't mind zhat much, especially since you brought zhe gloves." Francis said, relieved to find that he wouldn't have to deal with any scratches or bites later. Francis put the gloves on and turned to Dr. Tino. "Who first?" He asked.
"Let's start with one of the adult cats first, then we can do Maple and leave him to that adult since it appears these adults want to keep at least one with him." Dr. Tino said. Francis nodded, picking Cesar up, knowing he'd be the calmest one to go first.
"Oui, zhen Cesar would be a good one." Francis said. He gently held Cesar on the table, Maple looking at Cesar.
Dr. Tino was quick to give Cesar his shot, Cesar holding back any sound of protest to try to not make Maple any more nervous than the poor kit was. Cesar sighed with relief when he felt the needle be taken out of his behind. Cesar was quick to scamper back to his family when Francis released him.
"Man, he was good." Dr. Tino said, getting the next shot ready. Francis nodded.
"I zhought as much." Francis said. "Biscuit, Cesar, I just need to borrow Maple for a moment." Francis said, slowly lifting Maple up, though both parents were quick to follow Francis over to the other side of the table.
"Yep, but can you hold him still while I give him something for his throat?" Dr. Tino asked, holding up a syringe with a bottle nipple on the end. Francis nodded and turned Maple towards Dr. Tino who put the nipple into Maple's mouth and got him to drink the medicine.
"Yucky!" Maple whimpered once the nipple was taken out and he was turned around, his behind facing the doctor. Cesar came forward and licked Maple's face, cringing at the lingering taste of the medicine.
"Oui, I know but it will be okay, now comes zhe shot." Cesar said. Maple whined and whimpered, his sounds of distress becoming a bit louder as he received his shot, but it was over quickly, and once Francis release him, Cesar was quick to pick Maple up and take him back to his cat carrier where he curled up around him.
"Okay, now for the other two." Dr. Tino said. Francis nodded and picked Biscuit up, taking a good guess that if Hero became distressed from the shot (which he likely would), then Biscuit would be more interested in tending to Hero than to getting a shot.
Biscuit held himself back, wanting nothing more to take a little revenge on the two humans who were giving him a shot, but he knew Hero was watching him, and he didn't feel like teaching Hero bad manners.
Biscuit sighed and stood to the side, watching Francis pick up Hero who squirmed, especially when Francis held him down, his behind facing Dr. Tino who held the needle.
"Okay little guy, it'll be over in a minute." Dr. Tino said. Hero whined and screeched when he felt the needle poke him, Francis forcing him to stay still. He went back to whining when the needle was removed, and as soon as Francis let him go, Hero was quick to dash back to Biscuit's cat carrier. Biscuit followed and curled around Hero, licking his kitten's fur.
"You did well," Biscuit said, grooming Hero.
"But Dad, it hurts and my butt aches!" Hero whined. Biscuit sighed.
"I know, love, believe me I know. But a shot that hurts for a few days is better than being sick for a week or two." Biscuit said. Hero sniffled, tears in his eyes.
"But it still hurt!" He whined. Biscuit rolled his eyes and went back to grooming Hero as the carriers were lifted up by Matthew and Francis, probably taking them back to the car and back home.
Meanwhile in the other carrier, Cesar kept curled up around Maple who had fallen asleep, curled up tightly into a ball into Cesar's side.
After a while of driving, the group arrived home where Francis and Matthew set the cat carriers down in the cat room, letting the doors open. Biscuit and Hero were the first to pop out, followed by Cesar carrying Maple out by the scruff of his neck, over to the large cat bed where he set the still sleeping kitten down.
Biscuit trotted over and curled around Maple, Hero coming over to the bed and settling down beside his brother. Cesar curled towards Biscuit, the group now settling down for a well deserved cat nap.
