It was the middle of the night, and for Lovino Vargas, sleeping was the very last thing on his mind. He was huge and uncomfortable and overdue, actually, by nearly a month. But was he going to wake up his lover to complain about this? Hell no. He could handle it on his own.

As quietly as he could, he slipped his legs over the side of the bed. Lovi had to wait for a moment for the tingling to stop, just so he could make sure they would support his weight. Then he stood up and walked out into the hallway. Cool air floated in on his flushed face and neck; it was July, and he wished the little boy would already get the fuck out of him.

He walked into the dim light of the nursery. The room was painted a pale green, with an open window and the ghost of a mobile hanging from the ceiling. With a grunt, he sat down in the rocking chair in the corner. Don't judge him; this room helped him relax and sleep.

Now if only it would help the baby to. Fat chance there.

He leaned back heavily, eyelids drooping. "All right, bambi," he said with a soft sigh. "Sleep now. We both need it."

The baby twisted inside of him just as he thought he might fall asleep. A sharp kick jolted him completely awake. "Dammit," he grumbled, rubbing his belly to try and soothe the little one. His back hurt. "Go to sleep, bambino."

But a few minutes later, the baby kicked again. Harder. The pain was sharp and it ripped through his pelvis, making him clutch himself and whimper.

Lovino's vision blurred ever so slightly from the intense pain. He tried to focus, but only one thought got through his mind.

He had to get up and go get Antonio.

With all the strength Lovino could muster, he stood shakily, hands under his belly to support himself. He was in the hallway when the pain came again, sharp and scary. He cried out, but he knew he couldn't stop moving. He had to get Toni before... Before...

Antonio, bless his soul, was still blissfully unaware and asleep. Lovino crawled onto the bed with difficulty and tried to shake him awake.

"Toni... Wake up..."

Slowly, he did. Antonio smiled sleepily in the dim light. "Lovi? Couldn't sleep?"

"Toni, I think--"

And then his legs and the sheets and everything was wet. The pain was there again and Lovi couldn't take it. He burst into tears.

Antonio sat up and gathered him into the sheet, before carrying him silently to the car. Halfway there the pain ripped through his body again.

The baby was coming fast. Too fast for the car ride. Lovi hoped desperately he wouldn't have the kid in the back of the car at three o'clock in the morning. Then he couldn't think of anything else, just pain.

Toni talked as he drove. It was an old habit; he always did it, for as long as Lovino had known him. He wasn't sure if he could hear him though.

"Almost there, mi amor, you'll be fine. In a little bit we'll have a little bambino, a little boy of our own. Just breathe..."

"Toni--" Lovino said weakly. It scared him how weak he sounded. "Toni, something...something's wrong--"

"No, nothing is. It's just your nerves talking, Lovi. Everything's fine."

The baby was coming so fast now, even though he was almost two months late. That couldn't be normal.

Antonio carried him into the hospital. By this time, Lovino wasn't responding to anything. It scared Toni more than he'd like to admit but he didn't say anything about it.

He found a nurse. "Please-- help him--"

They took him from him and when Toni tried to follow, a nurse held him back. "Sir, you need to calm down. He'll be fine. Someone will come and get you when everything's done. Just have a seat."

Antonio paced around the waiting room, getting more and more anxious. He was positive that something was wrong. He also didn't think he should just be out here. His amor needed him--

The hospital doors opened and arms engulfed him. Toni jumped and looked down. Feli was there, looking sleepy and for once silent. He wasn't surprised because he was his brother, and his twin at that -- but still, how did he know to come..?

"We're twins." Feli whispered, resting his head on Antonio's shoulder but still not letting go of him. "We know when something's going on with each other."

Antonio nodded without really thinking. It was better now that Feli was here. At least a little.

But his okay feeling was completely shattered when he heard the screams coming from the room next to him. He held onto Feli tighter, fingers burying into his soft bones.

What seemed like hours passed. Toni wrung his hands, numb and shaking to the sound of pain. The two of them had sunk into seats. He only stood up, eyes wide, when the doctor approached them.

"Lovino Vargas' family?"

"Si, I'm his partner." Toni took a shaky step forward. "Is he all right?"

The doctor didn't answer, looking grim, and looked at Feli too. "One visitor at a time. Please follow me, sir."

Feli nodded reassuringly and squeezed his hand. Without another word, though with his thoughts spinning in a panic, he followed the doctor to a hospital room.

Lovino was on a bed, eyes closed and an oxygen mask over his face. His hair was sweaty, stuck to his forehead, and there were tubes in his arms. He had blood all across and down his legs.

"Lovi..."

"It was very close, I'll admit." The doctor said quietly. "The baby was breeched -- you know, the feet were coming out first. Halfway through it would've been a good idea to give him a c-section but it was too late."

Toni stared at the shallow but definite rise of his chest.

"It would be a good idea to keep him over night and a few more days here, I think. Just to make sure he's stable."

Someone came up behind Toni and he jumped again. It was a nurse; she held a small blue bundle.

"Sir, he's yours." She handed him his son. Before he could even say anything to her, she murmured, "We'll give you some privacy."

She and the doctor left and closed the door after them.

Antonio sat down in the chair next to Lovino's bed, pulling down the blanket around his son. His cheeks were chubby and pink, his eyes closed. And since he was so young, his tufty dark hair hadn't fully dried yet. He snuggled deeper into the blanket.

"...he's beautiful, isn't he?"

Antonio jumped for the third time that day. Morning, still. Lovino looked at him from his mound of pillows, eyes red. He still looked sick.

"Lovi! Put that back on! You have to be able to breathe!"

He shook his head weakly, before wincing. "'M fine, asshole, don't worry about me..." He looked at the baby in his arms. "Mario Antonio Vargas-Carriedo... What do you think?"

"Perfect," he breathed, before planting a gentle kiss to his forehead. He couldn't have said it any better himself. "Te amo, mi corazon."

"Ti amo troppo." His eyes drifted close. Toni pushed his hair off his forehead tenderly.

"Get some sleep, Lovi. I'm not going anywhere, I promise."

Soon, he was asleep. Antonio held their baby boy and settled in to be ready for when he woke up again.

Their family was here, safe. And Toni's heart swelled with love and adoration.
