The province became successful due to its plantation systems and cash crops, eventually leading the region to become a crown colony by 1719. Around 1712/1729, North Carolina split off to rule as a separate colony, consequently creating South Carolina. South Carolina would eventually become independent from Great Britain, later becoming a state of America.
