50 States Pets & Creatures - Part 1

Introduction

Though of minor importance, the inclusion of pets and creatures can be a cute addition for characters. In Hetalia, America is shown to have a whale, a cat, a unicorn he can't see, a bunny (during their childhood), and an alien named Tony as companions. He also has an eagle as a carrier animal, but I digress. With around 70% of households in the United States owning at least one pet, it's conclusive to say most Americans love animals. No question, most of my OCs have their own pets and creatures to reflect that notion.

Before going through and judging this series, I want to say a couple of things:

As always, I've done a lot of research on the subject. There are lots of animals and creatures in this world, even among domesticated breeds. In addition, many states have designated various mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and all sorts of animals as their state symbols. Unless every OC of mine lives on a large property completely unbound by animal ownership laws, it'll be impossible for them to own a menagerie of sorts. For my sanity, each OC will have six kinds of creatures at most, excluding state birds for I distinguish them as being the states' carrier animals.

Believe me when I say some OCs are harder than others to figure out. Some people may find these choices odd. Some people may disagree with them. I understand those thoughts completely. I'm open to changes and criticisms as long as they're polite and understanding. Overall, I appreciate everyone taking the time to read this series.

As always, continue reading as usual.

Delaware

Rover the Golden Retriever (Male): Contrary to their owner's personality, Rover is an active, friendly dog whose popularity among the states far eclipses Delaware. They go crazy for chicken.

Bethany the Delaware Blue Hen (Female): Nicknamed Beth, they're specifically a blue strain of American Game chicken. Delaware got them as a newly hatched chick during the American Revolutionary War. Unlike their owner, Beth is a sassy chicken with no problems fighting things more than twice their size.

Delaware Chickens: Delaware keeps a small flock in his backyard for egg production. He used to raise more of them, but the breed had fallen out of popularity in the broiler industry since the mid-1950s. Thanks to Beth's presence, these chickens aren't as assertive by comparison.

Pennsylvania

Hershey the Great Dane (Male): This particular canine has cropped ears and a fawn coat. They were given to Pennsylvania as a gift from Germany in the late 19th century. Contrary to their sheer size, Hershey is a gentle giant with a desire to be a lazy lap dog.

Sylvester the Boxer (Male): This particular canine has uncropped ears, an undocked tail, and a brown brindle coat with a white patch on its chest in the shape of a keystone. Among Pennsylvania's dogs, they stick out for being bright, playful, and energetic. Though properly trained, they have a habit of chasing after birds, notably chickens.

Klaus the German Shepherd (Male): This particular canine has a saddle black-and-tan coat. They were given to Pennsylvania as a gift from Germany in the late 20th century. Though properly trained, they can only understand commands in German.

Liberty the Snowshoe Cat (Female): A chocolate colorpoint with blue eyes. Liberty is a sweet kitty with a talent for swimming and unlocking doors. They know their owner's work schedule very well, oftentimes complaining about being lonely whenever Pennsylvania arrives home late.

Mustard the Ferret (Male): A gib with a chocolate coat, adopted as a pet in the 1980s. True to the species, Mustard tends to steal things around the house, notably cat food. Liberty interprets their "weasel war dance" as an act of mockery.

Peep: A sentient yellow Peeps chick that can be distinguished by its red (soulless) eyes. It'll sometimes perch on Pennsylvania's shoulder. Unless proven otherwise, it's indestructible.

New Jersey

Scarlet the Somali Cat (Female): A ruddy feline with golden eyes. Lots of toys are needed to satisfy their active personality. Trout is their favorite flavor of cat food.

Bonnie the Jersey Wooly Rabbit (Female): A doe with black eyes and an agouti coat. This Mug Head loves to roam around the apartment and rooftop garden. Blueberries are their favorite snack.

The Jersey Devil: Since their initial encounter, New Jersey has become "acquaintances" with the cryptid. He'll occasionally go to the Pine Barrens to seek out the creature, often bringing with him snacks in the hopes of luring the creature. Though not always successful, New Jersey does appreciate taking the time to talk to the spirits that live in the forest.

Georgia

Sonny the English-American Bulldog Mix (Male): A bulldog mix sporting a short white coat with tan patches around their head. Georgia adopted Sonny from an animal shelter due to her love for the breed. She adores them, however, she isn't keen on them drooling and farting around guests.

Connecticut

Acorn the Eastern Chipmunk (Female): This chipmunk likes to climb all over Connecticut's body, often settling on top of his head or inside one of his pockets. Despite their cute appearance, they're extremely skittish and dislike being touched by strangers. Acorns are their favorite food hence their namesake.

Massachusetts

Johnny the American Cocker Spaniel (Male): Sporting a golden coat, this particular canine is supposedly a distant descendant of the first spaniel that arrived in British North America via the Mayflower. Despite showing poise as a former show dog, they'll immediately go beserk when startled by loud noises. Apple slices are their favorite snack.

Judy the Boston Terrier (Female): This black-and-white Boxwood has a strong, happy-go-lucky personality and a funny face that can bring smiles to people's faces. They have trained and participated in a variety of dog sports such as rally obedience and dock jumping. Turkey is their favorite flavor of dog food.

Sammy the American Shorthair (Male): A brown classic tabby with green eyes and an extra digit on each of their front paws. Sammy was Massachusetts's first pet who tended to follow him around the streets of Boston. Nowadays, they spend their days indoors, looking down on their owner's dogs.

Maryland

Chelsea the Chesapeake Bay Retriever (Female): This particular canine has amber eyes and a sedge coat. They're very outgoing, known to smile and go crazy whenever Maryland takes them to the beach. Crabmeat is often given to them as a treat.

Susie the Calico Cat (Female): Maryland adopted them from the streets a long time ago. They like to sleep in Maryland's lap while she's reading. Crabmeat is their favorite treat.

Skipjack the Thoroughbred (Male): Nicknamed Skip, they're distinguished for having a chestnut coat with a blaze on their face and a pair of stockings on their rear legs. They used to compete in horse races when they were younger. Nowadays, Skip is ridden for pleasure, sometimes participating in jousts at renaissance fairs.

Lenore the Common Raven (Female): This curious corvid likes to greet Maryland at a window and play catch-me-if-you-can with her dog. Though they appear sociably friendly, they have on several occasions annoyed Maryland for cawing loudly and stealing small things that belong to her. Being an intelligent fiend, Lenore takes pleasure in using human speech to mock people.

South Carolina

Spartan the Boykin Spaniel (Male): This particular canine has gold eyes and a liver coat. This pompous Swamp Poodle loves dog spas just as much as hunting. September 1st is their birthday.

Dixie the Carolina Dog (Female): This particular canine has a ginger coat with white markings. They're a littermate to Lily (North Carolina's dog). Dixie is known for excess barking; sometimes joining Spartan in protecting South Carolina together.

New Hampshire

Pumpkin the Chinook (Female): This particular canine has a light honey coat. After the death of the breed's founder, New Hampshire took it upon himself help to save the breed and adopt a pup of his own. Coincidentally, Pumpkin likes the taste of pumpkin.

Jack the American Bobtail (Male): An orange-spotted tabby with hazel eyes. Thanks to Vermont's influence, New Hampshire got a cat for himself, choosing the breed for its resemblance to the bobcat. Unlike some felines that prefer to remain indoors, Jack often enjoys accompanying their owner on long hikes in the outdoors.

New Hampshire Red Chickens: A small flock that originally came as a gift from Rhode Island. Through selective breeding, New Hampshire created a flock of his own breed of chicken. He would oftentimes feed them pumpkin guts after he finished carving a jack-o'-lantern.

Virginia

Jamie the American Foxhound (Male): They were given to Virginia as a gift from George Washington. True to their breed, Jamie had an amazing aptitude for hunting game animals, most notably foxes. With those hunting days behind them, they had since spent their days sleeping on the porch.

Sootica the Lykoi (Female): Some of the states suspect this mysterious feline to be either a familiar (an animal spirit associated with witches) or a miniature werewolf that happens to meow on occasion. Sootica may not be the prettiest cat, but they give a lot of affection to Virginia who doesn't mind their cat's strange appearance. Although, she does take issue with them shedding at random times of the year.

T.J. the American Guinea Pig (Male): A boar with a tortoiseshell-and-white coat whose full name is Thomas Jefferson; their actual full name is Test Subject. They have been used for several experiments in the past, but they have since retired alongside a littermate named Little Jemmy. Whenever it's Halloween, Virginia will buy and even make cute costumes for them to wear.
