40. South Dakota

Nickname: The Mount Rushmore State

Human Name: Skylar Mahpiya Dakota

Age: 17 Years Old

Gender: Female

Historical Background: The region was inhabited by many Native American tribes when the first French-Canadian traders explored the region in 1743. It was claimed as a part of Spanish/French Louisiana Territory until 1803 when it became a part of the United States. In 1858, the Yankton Sioux sold most of their territory to the United States. It later led to the creation of the Dakota Territory in 1861. By 1889, the territory was split into the states of North Dakota and South Dakota.

Statehood: November 2, 1889 (40th)

Hair Color: Mahogany Brown

Eye Color: Hazel

Height: 5' 5" (165 cm)

Notable Traits: She has low pigtails. She has olive skin. She typically wears a light green top (usually a tunic shirt) and a pair of jeans; she'll sometimes sport a motorcycle jacket. She also wears a bear claw necklace and a Black Hills gold ring. She's bilingual in English and Sioux.

Favorite Foods & Drinks: Chislic, Cookies & Cream Ice Cream, Frybread, Grilled Walleye, Kolaches, Kuchen, Roasted Pheasant, Tiger Meat (not made from actual tigers), Wasna (aka Pemmican), Wojapi

Likes: Bowhunting, Coyotes, Motocross, Rock Climbing, Powwows

Dislikes: Hail, Mars (planet), North Dakota, Raccoons, Tumbleweed

Personality: Lively and Silly. It isn't uncommon for most people to have trouble telling the Dakotas apart, nor is it far-fetched to say they're cut from the same cloth. Compared to their twin, this Dakota has an immature demeanor. She's an extrovert who tends to speak whatever she wants without thinking twice. Besides her boldness and vitality, she has a great sense of humor. Although, her pranks tend to get out of hand and bother some people. Though reckless by nature, she isn't downright dumb; she's more clever than she lets on. She doesn't like to be ignored, nor does she want to be seen as dull. To put it simply, Mount Rushmore and acres of farmland aren't enough to get people's attention. Even so, she wants to be deemed a better state compared to her brother at least.

Trivia:
+ Though Kansas is known as the Sunflower State, the state that produces the most sunflowers in the country is actually South Dakota.
+ Much of her childhood was spent with the Yankton-Yanktonai Sioux Tribe. During that time, she had silly interactions with several Sioux deities such as Iktomi and Mica.
+ Throughout the 1930s, she assisted in the construction of Mount Rushmore.
+ She owns a dual-sport motorcycle.
+ She has constructed crop art for the Corn Palace every year since the late 19th century.
