The Date
"Hey Rose," Peter called. She came hurrying out of the bedroom.
"Yes?" she asked calmly. Peter swallowed and tried his hardest not to sweat.
"Would you like to go out on a date with me?" Rose's whole face lit up and she smiled from ear to ear.
"I would love to!" she exclaimed, rushing to him to give him a tight hug. Peter hugged her back, but was already second guessing the family dinner. "When do you wanna go?" Rose asked, looking up at him.
"I wanted you to join me for family dinner on Friday, but my family dinners can get pretty heated really fast. So...I want to take you on a more relaxing date tonight," Peter said.
"Your family is one of those families huh?" Rose laughed.
"Yeah," Peter sighed.
"I've got tough skin, I'm sure I can handle it," Rose reminded him. "Anyway," she quickly changed the topic, "where are we going for our date?"
"It's a surprise," Peter answered because the truth was, he hadn't quite figured it out yet.
"Ok, what should we do in the mean time?" Rose asked.
"We could watch movies," Peter quickly suggested.
"What kind?"
"Whatever you want," Peter said as he let Rose go; they had been in their embrace throughout their entire conversation.
After 4 hours of action packed, explosive, adventure filled movies, it was time to leave for their date. Rose grabbed her striking royal blue and black leather jacket and checked her makeup before she left. She followed Peter outside to a taxi and her opened the door for her. Rose blushed and said thank you. "Where are we going?" she asked.
"You'll see," Peter said with a smile. Rose looked out her window most of the drive at the busy life of New York. She'd never seen so many people in one place at once. She caught Peter checking her out more than once, but what's not to like? She was tall, skinny, muscled, but not too much, had a flawless face, beautiful eyes, a nice smile, and a fun personality.
"So I see you got a girlfriend," the cab driver said to break the silence.
"Mohinder, please stop," Peter said embarrassed.
"I was only making an observation," Mohinder defended himself, "Besides, she's pretty." Rose giggled and blushed as she glanced over at Peter to see what his reaction would be. "Relax Peter, we all knew your day would come and so it has. Enjoy yourselves," Mohinder said cheerily as came to a stop in front of a park. Peter got out and came around to open the door for Rose again. "Peter," Mohinder called and waited for him to duck his head back in before lowering his voice, "Watch out for that killer. I'd hate to see something happen to you and your girlfriend."
"Will do, thanks for the warning," Peter answered as he handed Mohinder his money. Peter intertwined his fingers with Rose's and off they went. "When I was a boy, my mom used to bring my brother and I here to play," Peter began, "We were only three at the time. I'd pretend I was a superhero while my brother pretended to be an army pilot." Rose smiled as they walked. "Once we got older, I was always getting into trouble, but Nathan was always there to pull me out."
"It must be nice to have an older sibling to look up to," Rose commented.
"Sometimes, I think it's a curse," Peter joked and they both shared a laugh.
"I'm an only child, I lost my parents in a store shooting when I was barely beginning Middle School. I tried living with other family members, but they all have at least five of their own kids to worry about. So, I was put into a foster home program, but that didn't last long either," Rose explained.
"How come?" Peter asked.
"Nobody wanted a teenage girl that was five two that had acne and braces who wasn't very good at making friends or doing her homework."
"Wow, I would've never guessed," Peter said surprised.
"I ended up in an orphanage helping the younger kids until I got my own job at the local flower shop. I really liked that job to; good pay, nice people, friendly co-workers, and something about taking care of the plants was extremely calming. I saved up enough money to buy my own car and as soon as I turned eighteen, I was kicked out of the orphanage. With nowhere to go, I lived in my car."
"Did anyone ever try to mess with you?" Peter asked.
"Oh yeah, at least twice a month and every time, I had to think of something to use as a weapon within a matter of seconds or else I'd be dead, raped, or both. I had a Taser that I always kept hidden in the glove compartment and boy, was that thing my best friend. It was like that for a good seven months and then one day, I was saved by a bounty hunter. He took me in and introduced me to my old boss who eventually hooked me up with the private agency. I've been there ever since, even to this day," Rose finished.
"I had no idea," Peter said sadly, stopping to take Rose's other hand in his.
"I know, I'm depressing," Rose said when she saw the look on his face.
"I never said that," he shook his head.
"You don't have to say it for me to know what you're thinking; it's the same thing everyone thinks when they find out," Rose replied.
" I'm not everyone Rose, I'm the crazy guy that saved you and let a total stranger stay in my apartment remember?" he reminded her.
"For that, I'm grateful. It's not very often people treat me like that," she said as she gave Peter a small kiss on the cheek, "and I couldn't ask you to do anything more than that." Peter stared into her eyes and then pulled her in for a hug so her head was on his chest. Rose hugged him back, resting her head on his shoulder. All of a sudden, Peter's phone went off.
"Of course someone has to ruin this perfect moment of mine," he thought irritated. "Hello?" he answered in an unfriendly tone.
"Pete, it's me. I found some stuff and you're not going to like it," Claire said.
"Not now Claire, please?" Peter asked nicely.
"You said you wanted to know what I could find and now I'm telling you."
"I'm on a date," Peter informed her.
"Oh...ok, um, I guess I can call you back later?" Claire suggested.
"You can tell me on Friday at dinner, Rose is coming to," Peter added.
"Oh buy," Claire tensed up.
"What's wrong?" he asked concerned.
"My Dad's coming to," Claire told him. Peter's face went blank.
"WHAT?!"
"We're all gonna hate it, buy hey, at least you've got someone to run to for comfort and warm feelings."
"That's not funny," Peter said seriously.
"Whatever, I gotta go though, cheer practice and all of that," Claire said goodbye.
"Take care," Peter hung up.
"Is everything ok?" Rose asked worried.
"It's fine, nothing to worry about," Peter lied.
"Let's go get ice cream or something, it'll make you feel better," Rose said.
