Seeing Mom
Peter followed Matt into the hallway. "What did you find?" Peter asked. Matt scrunched up his face, shaking his head.
"It was like she could feel that I was in her head and put up a giant wall so I couldn't get through," Matt informed him.
"It's still too fresh in her head, I'm sure she'll come around. Give it time," Peter said.
"I don't know," Matt started, "I feel like she's hiding something," he said as he glanced back at Rose. Peter followed his gaze, trying to sort out his thoughts. "Maybe I'm being pushy," Matt added.
"If you feel like something fishy is going on, then dig deeper," Peter suggested.
"I won't need to if you can get close enough to her," Matt said.
"No! I won't do it," Peter said stubbornly.
"Why not? It's obvious she feels comfortable around you."
"I don't have time to become her new best friend," Peter said defiantly and walked off.
"How much harm could it cause?" Matt asked as he stopped Peter. Peter sighed.
"It wouldn't end well; he could find out about my powers," Peter lowered his voice. Matt's cell phone rang.
"I got to go, but don't say I didn't try," he said, hurrying off. Peter went back to see Rose.
"Did I say something wrong?" she asked worriedly.
"Why would you say that?" Peter asked as he sat down next to her on the edge of her bed.
"I could see Officer Parkman didn't seem satisfied with my statement."
"He's dealing with more than one case right now," Peter lied, "There's nothing you should be worried about. You gave him the information he asked for."
"Are you sure that's why he's upset?" Rose asked. Peter gaped; there wasn't many people he'd come across that could tell when he was lying.
"I can't tell you about his work because it's classified," Peter explained.
"I know, it's against the rules, but you don't have to lie to me to keep me from getting worried. Speaking of which, are my friends worrired about me?" Rose asked.
"They were until they found out you injuries would heal quickly," Peter said. He heard a commotion of rushing feet in the hallway and suddenly looked concerned.
"You can go if you want to, you don't need to worry about me," Rose said casually as she followed his gaze. "I can tell you care more about others than yourself," she added. Peter turned to look back at Rose.
"Stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, the nurse has to keep you overnight, part of procedure, and I'll come by tomorrow morning before you leave," Peter said quickly as headed for the door.
"Hey Peter," Rose called. He poked his head back in the doorway. "Thank you." Peter smiled.
"You're welcome," he said and took off to help other patients as fast as he could. Peter thought about Rose and how she acted around him while he healed a burn victim. He was so deep in thought that he didn't hear someone calling his name.
"Peter, are you going to continue to ignore me or are you actually going to talk to me?" an elderly woman scolded. Peter sighed and let his shoulders droop.
"Sorry mom, I was trying to help my patient here," he apologied.
"Why haven't you answered my calls or texts?" she asked irritably.
"I've been busy," Peter said, which wasn't a complete lie.
"You could've left me a message or told me what time worked best for you."
"I was getting around to it mom, but we both know there's a lot of work to be done," Peter said, taking off his latex gloves and threw them away.
"There will always be work for you to do, but your mother won't always be here," she barked as Peter washed his hands. "I know we haven't been on the best of terms lately, but I still love you and care about you," his mom said.
"This new patient we got in yesterday is really something," Peter said, suddenly changing the topic.
"How so?" his mom asked.
"She's just...different. I don't know who or why, she just is and I can't place it."
"I know you're techinically not supposed to tell me, but I am your mother aren't I?"
"She was found in a dark alley beat up and cut open; she was clubbing with her friends, but I think there's more to it than that and there's something different about her. It's bothering me that I can't explain it though, it's like a gut feeling," Peter explained.
"Do you think she's one of us? Someone who has powers?" his mom asked. Peter shook his head.
"I don't feel like I got new powers, but she was feelding off of other people's emotions and she knew I was lying to her today," Peter said.
"Then keep an eye on her. There's been multiple killings lately of people with powers," his mom warned.
"I will," Peter reassured her.
"Before I go, I hve one last thing to say," his mom started, "I want you to come to family dinner with Nathan and I on Saturday, it's been too long."
"I'll only go if Claire can go, otherwise, count me out," Peter said stubbornly.
"Fine," his mom spat as she turned on her heel and moodily walked away. Peter didn't feel bad at all for the way he treated his mom, especially since he despised family dinners. He finished cleaning up and went to save more patients.
On his way home from work, Peter's cell phone rang, "Hello?"
"Peter, it's Surresh. Noah found someone who needs some special healing. Think you could come down here and help us out?"
"Sure Mohinder, where are you?" Peter asked.
"At the lab, as usual," Suresh answered tiredly.
(Short chapter, I know, but the next one should be longer)
