Bad News For Everyone Pt. 2

"My my! Who is this...pretty girl standing in our home?" Rose turned her head to see an elderly woman that Peter resembled and knew instantly that it was his mother.

"Mom, this is Rose," Peter introduced them.

"Hi," Rose said sheepishly. Peter wrapped an arm around Rose's waist causing her to blush furiously.

"She's my girlfriend," Peter announced to everyone. Noah's smiled quickly turned to a frown and Peter's mom's smile faded slightly as well.

"Girlfriend?" Peter's mom asked surprised and then hurried to add, "Peter hasn't had one of those in years!"

"Mo-om!" Peter protested.

"Oh hush Peter! I'm only teasing you," she said, gently hitting his arm. Everyone awkwardly stood there and silently glanced at each other. "What are we all standing around here for? Let's eat!" Peter's mom finally said. Everyone hurried to follow her to the dining room to claim their seats.

"I need to talk to you later," Peter said quietly in a grumpy tone to Noah as he passed by. Peter quickly lightened his mood so he wouldn't worry Rose. He pulled Rose's chair out for her and pushed her back in before taking her seat next to her. Across from them sat Claire and her dad with Nathan and Peter's mom at either end of the table.

"So Rose, what do you do for a living?" Peter's mom asked as their food was served.

"I work for Mr. Bennet, he typically makes me run all of his errands for him," Rose lied.

"And how do you feel about that?" Claire asked as she took a bite of meat. Peter pretended to choke to hide his laugh, Nathan took a sip of water to hide his smile, Peter's mom raised her eyebrows, and Noah got mad.

"Claire!" he scolded. She gave him a 'what?' look and shrugged her shoulders.

"I don't have a problem with it, but there is one that's impossible for me to do," Rose spoke in code as she glared at Mr. Bennet.

"What task is that?" Nathan asked curiously.

"Having to deliver packages unexpectedly," Rose chose her words carefully.

"There is a map posted on the wall, it can't be that hard to lose your way," Mr. Bennet told her.

"It is when I get so lost in my work that I find that I actually care about certain people," Rose shot back. Mr. Bennet went back to his meal and Peter quickly changed the topic.

"Claire, I hear you made the cheer team at your new school."

"Yes and let me tell you, it wasn't easy," she stated.

"It never is, is it?" Peter's mom asked kindly.

"Was it your first time?" Rose asked.

"Oh, no, I've been doing cheer since middle school. This time however, there was way too much drama," Claire explained the whole situation and what went down. When she was done, Nathan announced how he wanted to run as President and so the conversations went well until after dessert.

"Nathan dear, can you talk to Rose for me to keep her distracted so I can have a talk with Peter?" Peter's mom asked privately.

"Sure, anything for you mom," Nathan answered and Claire joined in on their conversation since she had nobody else to talk to.

"Noah!" Peter whisper yelled. Noah frowned as he came over, already knowing what it was about it.

"Since when does a girl who's supposedly a private government agent work for you?" Peter questioned.

"My company is in some serious trouble with an upset client who's threatened many of my co-workers. Rose is there to help us sort things out and to be extra security if needed," Noah lied, coming up with a believable excuse. Peter relaxed and put his hand on Noah's shoulder.

"Oh, good," Peter breathed a sigh of relief, "I thought that you were going to say that she was working with Sylar or something."

"No! Not at all," Mr. Bennet said. Peter's mom gestured that she wanted to see Peter.

"Yes mom?" Peter asked.

"Who is she?" she asked.

"I told you, Rose is my girlfriend."

"I know that, I mean who is she really?"

"Rose works for a private government agency...why?" Peter asked worried when he saw the fear in his mom's eyes.

"She's the one I saw in my dream, the one that's supposed to kill us."

"That's outrageous! Rose wouldn't do such a thing. She came to me for help when she had nowhere else to go," Peter defended her.

"My dreams don't lie, you and I both know that Peter," his mom said. Peter felt frustrated. There was no way in the world that Rose was a deadly assassin.

"You're sure it's her?" Peter asked as he stared at Rose from across the room. She caught his stare and blushed as she pulled a lock of hair behind her ear.

"Yes, I'm sure, only, she was dressed in a black suit with red accents," his mom answered. Peter sighed sadly.

"I feel like we have a connection going, like maybe she has powers," Peter told her.

"If she does, then you know how much more dangerous she can be," his mom warned.

"I'll take my chances," Peter said determined.

"Be careful."

"Relax, she trusts me," Peter walked away to get a soda.

"Dad, what is going on?" Claire asked quietly when she saw Peter's upset mood.

"What do you mean Claire Bear?" Mr. Bennet asked innocently.

"Why is Peter upset and why does Rose work for you? You of all people?"

"It's only temporary," he reassured her.

"Then why does she have a list of names of people with powers? Some of them are crossed out and everyone of them has shown up as dead," Claire interrogated her dad.

"How would you know that?" Mr. Bennet asked.

"That doesn't matter right now, what matters is the fact that you promised me that you wouldn't do this kind of thing again and now you are," Claire said hurt.

"I'm not doing a thing."

"Yes you are! What's worse is that this time around, you've hired some assassin to do your dirty work for you who just happens to bump into Peter and fall in love with him when she's supposed to kill him!" Claire said horrified.

"How do you know that?" Mr. Bennet asked furiously.

"IT DOESN'T MATTER! YOU BROKE YOUR PROMISE AND NOW PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING YOU DID!" Claire yelled in tears. The room fell silent and Claire stomped out of the room. Peter ran after her to figure things out.

"Claire! Claire wait," Peter called from the back door. "What happened?" Claire turned around and ran to Peter, bursting into tears.

"My Dad...h-he broke his promise," Claire said through tears.

"I...don't understand," Peter said cautiously.

"He p-promised that he w-wouldn't do dirty work anymore, but he h-hired an assassin to k-kill you and your family," Claire cried. Peter jerked her away from him to look her in the eyes.

"Are you saying that my mom was right about her dream?" Peter asked incredulously.

"Ye-es!" Claire wailed, "he hired Rose to do it! Of all the people it had to be HER!" Claire sobbed. Peter hugged her tightly and had to keep his anger from boiling over or else he was going to strangle Noah Bennet.

"Do you think she'll really kill you and the others?" Claire asked as she wiped her tears away.

"I don't know; I don't think so, at least, not after tonight," Peter answered slowly.

"I was starting to really like her and she was so nice to me," Claire thought aloud.

"I'm not going to let her kill anyone ok? I can make that a promise," Peter said. Claire let out a small, half -hearted laughed and let more tears come. Peter saw someone coming down the back stairs and saw that it was a concerned Rose.

"Is everything ok?" she asked softly, putting a hand on Claire's shoulder. Claire nodded and left. "What was that all about?"

"Typical father-daughter drama," Peter lied. Rose nodded. "Do you want to leave?"

"I thought you'd never ask," Rose said relieved. Peter grabbed her hand and led her back inside.

"Peter, where do you think you're going?" his mom stopped them halfway to the door. Peter abruptly stopped and rolled his eyes as he turned back around.

"We're leaving mom; it was such a nice family dinner and I can't wait to come back," Peter said sarcastically. Peter's mom looked like she was going to throw something and because of that, Peter ran with Rose for the taxi. They got in and bursted out laughing. "The last time I talked to her that way was when Nathan threw his eighteenth birthday party and I wanted to leave and she wouldn't let me."

"At least you won this time," Rose commented.

"Ok," Peter said calming himself down, "Where to now?"

"Anywhere but there."

"To the city side shore," Peter told the cab driver.
