A Clue

Peter finished demonstrating for the new guy and headed out with this partner for their ambulance. They hadn't been driving very long when they got a call from someone that had been supposedly shot with an arrow in their apartment. Peter was noticing that this was happening more and more often. His partner quickly parked the ambulance. A familiar face was already there getting the details. "Matt, we meet again," Peter said as they shook hands.

"Oh hey man, fancy seeing you  here," Officer Parkman greeted him.

"What have we got?" Peter asked as he put his latex gloves on.

"Same story as all of the others. No sign of a break in, no trace of who it was, and no evidence other than the wooden arrows," Parkman answered.

"Not even a fingerprint or a piece of hair?" Peter questioned. Officer Parkman shook his head.

"Whoever is doing this knows their stuff and is probably a pro," Parkman said.

"That's too bad, I hate how by the time someone actually notices they're dead, that there's nothing I can do to save them," Peter said sadly.

"You can't save everybody Peter, sometimes, you've gotta take a blow," Matt said.

"I know, but this shouldn't be happening, not like this."

"I'd have to say the that I couldn't agree with you more on tha-" Matt stopped and frowned.

"What is it?" Peter asked. Matt looked up at the top of the building and did a double take.

"Somebody's up there, I can feel their pain. It's like they know what they're doing, but are now regretting it," Matt answered. Peter followed his gaze and sure enough. there was a dark outline of a person standing on the roof.

"Is that the killer?"

"I don't know, let me see if I can get inside of their head," Officer Parkman said. He found their mind and started probing. He could feel her pain and sadness, but there was something else; whoever this girl was, Matt felt like they had met before. Suddenly, he felt her voice inside of his head. "Hey, she trying to say something," Matt concentrated a little harder, "She's trying to say..she's saying to tell you that she's sorry and that she doesn't want to keep doing this, but she has to. So yeah, that answers your question; this girl is definitely the killer, but something about her seems familiar," Matt explained.

"You're saying that whoever this girl is, she knows who I am and has met you?" Peter asked confused.

"Yeah and it sounds like to me that she needs some help, like she's tired of killing," Officer Parkman answered.

"Ok, let's take care of the paperwork and we can sit down to try to solve this mystery together," Peter suggested.

"Sounds good to me," Officer Parkman agreed.

About 2 hours later, Peter and Matt were headed up to Peter's apartment. "Um, just to warn you, there's a girl staying here until the weekend," Peter warned Matt.

"Really?" Matt grinned, "How long have you had this girlfriend?"

"She's not my girlfriend! It's the one from the clubbing incident; she didn't have anywhere to stay because her friends' family were coming back to town. So, she came to me and I offered a place to stay," Peter explained.

"There's nothing romantic going on between the two of you?" Matt asked. Peter shook his head disappointedly. "If you're that disappointed about it, maybe you should ask her out?"

"Hey! Get out of my head Matt! You know better than to do that!" Peter scolded.

"Fine, but don't say I didn't tell you so," Officer Parkman joked. Peter unlocked the door and was surprised to see the lights were still on.

"Oh, you're back!" Rose said excitedly as she came in from the bedroom and walked up to give Peter a hug, but stopped herself when she saw Matt. "Officer Parkman! I had no idea you and Peter were friends."

"Yeah, I brought him over to go through some paperwork on a case he's working on." Peter saw the confusion on Rose's face and quickly added, "I'm a part of it since I operated on one of the victims regarding the case." Rose's expression softened a bit.

"Ok, I'll leave you two alone," she answered. Peter nodded and watched her as she walked back to the bedroom, catching the small frown forming on her face as she went.

"Why would she be upset? I thought we were friends, nothing more," Peter thought. "Let's get to it. How far back do I need to go?" he asked Matt as they sat at the kitchen table.

"Hmm, I'd say the past three weeks; that's about when these killings started happening." Peter thought back to that point and let Officer Parkman probe his mind for anyone both of them had met within that time frame. As Matt found the memory, he'd find something regarding their name and write it down. They came up with a very short list of only 5 names.

"Not much to work with, but hopefully something?" Peter tried to be positive. Matt sighed. "You don't think Sylar's back, do you?" Peter asked worried.

"No, this isn't his style," Matt stated, "I'm sure that whoever the girl was is the one whose killing all these people." Peter thought of all the names as he and Matt looked up each person's whereabouts and recent activities. Nothing was matching up and Rose's profile was looking pretty sketchy. "Rose is the only one who even semi matches up," Matt pointed out.

"I don't think she's capable of doing such things," Peter protected her.

"You haven't seen anything unusual about this Rose Wellington?" Peter shook his head.

"It's not like I know her that well anyway," Peter admitted.

"Then maybe you should get to know her. It wouldn't hurt to have a new friend."

"I guess not," Peter agreed, glancing at the bedroom.

"Let me know if you find anything and I'll keep digging," Matt said.

"Bye Matt." As he closed the door, he realized Rose was on the phone with someone. He quietly walked over to the door and listened in on the conversation.

"I know, I know, but I don't think I can do it. I still feel like a wreck!...I don't care what Mr. Banks thinks, especially since I don't work for him anymore...Fine! Give me 'til Tuesday and we'll see...Ok Mr. Bennet...Yes, thank you for understanding," Rose hung up and Peter heard her footsteps coming towards him.

"Who was that?" he asked casually, blocking Rose's path as she stepped out of the bedroom. She looked a little surprised, then smiled flirtatiously.

"Were you eavesdropping on me?" she asked.

"N-no, I was going to ask you if you were having trouble falling asleep, but then I heard you on the phone and I didn't want to interrupt. However, I noticed that you sounded a little stress and annoyed; is someone giving you a hassle?" Peter explained. Rose chuckled.

"It's my boss. He's upset I haven't gone back to work yet," she answered.

"And why haven't you?" Peter asked innocently.

"Because I'm here with you and I want to get to know you better," Rose thought. "I'm simply not ready to go back to work yet. I don't feel fully recovered."

"Then you should get some rest. I thought that's what you said you were going to do before I left," Peter said quizzically.

"I was, but I couldn't sleep knowing you weren't here," Rose blurted out. When she realized what she had said, her cheeks turned bright red. "Oh, I um," she said slowly.

"It's ok, no need to worry. Why don't we make some hot chocolate before you go to bed?"

"That sounds great," Rose agreed, but her blushing only turned a darker shade of red.

"Why are you blushing?" Peter asked while he heated 2 cups of water.

"I was blushing? I don't mean to," Rose said as she propped her face on her elbows, covering her cheeks with her hands. Peter had to turn his back to her to hide his ridiculous smile. He was enjoying this all too much.

"I am going to get it when I tell Matt about his," Peter thought as he added the chocolate flavoring. "Here you go," Peter brought Rose her cup and down on the couch next to her. He watched her as she gently sipped from her cup until she looked over at him and then he had to look away embarrassed. Peter caught the smile forming on Rose's lips as she sipped more of her hot chocolate. "What if she does like me?" Peter thought.

"Are you ok?" Rose suddenly asked.

"Yes, why?"

"You looked concerned there for a moment."

"This case Matt is working on is a tough one and requires a lot of problem solving."

"How so?" Rose asked interested. Peter didn't want to worry her, but he also didn't want to keep the truth from her either.

"There's been an unusual amount of killings lately targeting certain people, special people. There's been no evidence other than the kill weapon," Peter explained.

" Special people?" Rose asked raising an eyebrow.

"There's people out there that have powers, abilities even, and they're being targeted by an assassin," Peter told her.

"That's crazy! People don't have powers and the X-Men aren't real; it's purely a fictional rumor," Rose protested.

"Maybe, but the killer is real and that's a proven fact," Peter argued. Rose rolled her eyes.

"Thank you for the hot chocolate," she said putting her cup in the sink.

"No problem," Peter said as he joined her by the sink to rinse his cup out. As he shook some of the water out, he glanced at Rose to see she hadn't moved. "So she likes it when we're close to each other?" he thought, "Or does she do it on purpose just to see my reaction?" He turned to face Rose and saw the the slight shade of pink of her face as she grabbed the edge of the counted behind her. "Why are you so nervous?" Peter asked her.

"I'm not nervous!" Rose cried with a flirty smile.

"Oh really?" Peter asked returning the smile as he took a step closer. Her blushing grew darker and her eyes lit up as she looked at him. He crossed his arms and smirked. "Then why are you blushing again? Do you like me or something?" Rose looked down at her feet to hide the smile on her face.

"Maybe I do, maybe I don't. Why? Are you saying you like me or something?" Rose shot back.

"Using my own words against me," Peter teased. Rose laughed.

"I'm going to bed now, goodnight Peter," she said abruptly.

"Goodnight," he answered and watched her go until she was out of sight. Peter sighed deeply. "I need to talk to Claire about this one; she'll know what to do," Peter thought. He quickly sent her a text and waited for her to reply. She texted back quickly, saying she'd come by tomorrow right after lunch.
