Drunk On Love (Deliberately Terrible Title)
Dedicated to a requested by @Miss_TooManyFandoms. And I'm sorry for the super cheesy title.
Pollux couldn't draw his eyes away from the flames. His brother's body, wrapped in a violet shroud embroidered with an elaborate network of grape vines. It was beautiful. Too beautiful considering what lay inside. All the other demigods bowed their heads in mourning as Chiron declared Castor's death and the shroud was dumped into the fire and ignited. He and Castor hasn't been popular at camp. Who wants to hang out with a couple of Dionysus kids, after all? No special powers, no heroic achievements, no legends to their names. Many- even the great Percy Jackson -hadn't bothered to learn Castor's name before his death. So, it was no surprise that nobody cried. It was no surprise when the next enshrouded body was thrown into the fire even before Castor's had completely diminished.
The son of Dionysus wiped away a tear that had begun its descent down his cheek. No, he wouldn't cry in front of all these people. He had already spent days after the war in bed. Nightmares plagued his sleep. Castor's reappearing face. The banished demigod that had killed him. Another demigod. One that didn't give a damn about the consequences of what they'd done as long as they had revenge on their own parents, siblings, and friends. Pollux shook his head and stormed off, away from the fire and into the shadowy forest surrounding the campfire. Leaves and twigs snapped beneath his feet as he gathered speed until he was sprinting off the path. He only stopped when he came to a clearing: Trees opening up to the starry sky and a full moon that illuminated a small cliff overlooking the bonfire and that gave a clear view of the cabins in the distance. A sort of serenity overtook him and he sat down on the edge of the cliff staring down at the half-bloods that were making their way back to bed.
"Nice view. You okay, Pollux?"
Pollux turned and saw his friend, Celestia, standing at the treeline. "Oh, hey Celestia," he said.
Celestia sat next to him, tossing her curly red hair over her shoulder and tucked her knees against her chest. For a daughter of Aphrodite, the girl had hair frizzy enough to rival Rachel Elizabeth Dare's. Pollux inwardly chuckled and pulled a flask out of his pocket, taking a long swig.
Celestia crossed her arms. "I hope that's not wine. You know that's banned here." Her big brown eyes narrowed and were hidden behind thick lashes as she glared at him.
"Relax, it's not. While wine would be nice right about now, it's just some bug juice I smuggled out of the kitchens at lunch," Pollux replied. He forced a smile and tilted his head to take another gulp.
The red-head's hand shot out and grabbed the flask before the liquid could touch his lips and held it up to her nose and took a sniff. Deeming it safe, she thrust it back into his hands. "Hmph. You're addicted to that stuff, aren't you?" she asked.
Pollux shrugged. "All children of Dionysus are addicted to some sort of drink, even if it's not alcohol." He started to laugh as a faint memory rose in his brain. "Ya know, Castor used to love-"
His voice cracked and he lifted his hand to stifle a sob and brush away tears he hadn't realised were pouring down his face. Pollux's grip tightened around his flask and his breathing became heavy as he tried to regain himself.
Celestia reached out a hand and combed it through Pollux's tangled blond waves. "Shhh... It's okay Pollux... Come here." She pulled him into a tight hug, wrapping thin but scarred arms around his beefier body. It wasn't okay. Not in the least. Castor, his best friend and brother was gone forever. Left to stand before the judges of the underworld and find if his death in war was worthy of paradise. Pollux's body shook as Celestia held him and despite wanting nothing more than to be completely alone and gaze from the cliff, he was glad for the daughter of Aphrodite's presence. She had been so close to him and Castor, ever since they had arrived at camp. She trained with them, joked with them, and occasionally took away whatever sugary drink they were having if they got out of hand and began annoying the other campers.
"You know," she said at last. "It was hard to follow you. Everyone's grieving and depressed and it kept throwing me off your path. Even the nymphs. I felt Percy's emotions too, when they ignited Castor's shroud. I know you're mad at him, but he was really upset about your brother. He's sorry. And I'm so, so sorry Pollux."
"Well aren't we all sorry?" Pollux snapped. Celestia flinched and he lowered his voice. "Sorry... I'm just-"
"I know," she said. Pollux looked at her and she smiled. She wasn't wearing any makeup, he noticed. She usually did wear at least a little. And her eyes were bloodshot and swollen. Sometimes it was unnerving how easily Aphrodite kids could pick up on emotion. It was even more unnerving to see her as upset as he was.
"Now's probably a bad time to point this out, but I think you're the only person in the world who's capable of still looking attractive even while crying. You're not an ugly crier."
Celestia gave him a confused are-you-serious? look before throwing her head back and laughing. Pollux, realizing what he had just said, chortled along nervously.
"Oh gods Pollux, you're the best," she giggled.
"I'm not kidding! And who else can make these stupid camp shirts look glamorous even in battle? Besides you and no one else."
Celestia laughed harder and clutched at her stomach. Soon, Pollux was joining her. It felt good to laugh. Felt good to be alone with the one person he cared about most outside his family. Felt good to forget, even just for a bit.
After a few minutes, the laughter died down and Celestia faced him with an anxious grin. "Care to explain what a child of Dionysus is doing, flirting with a child of Aphrodite?"
"You were upset too. I was trying to make you happy. You lost your sister due to the war as well."
Celestia's expression grew dark. "That doesn't matter. Silena and I weren't close anyway. And she died heroically in the end, even if she was the spy. Besides, you are one who wouldn't get out of bed for a week."
"Maybe so, but I still care about you. You stuck by me and Castor all those years. You're one of the best friends I could ask for."
Celestia regarded him carefully for a second before tackling him in a hug. "Thank you Pollux."
Pollux tried to keep his heart rate in check as it sped up ever so slightly. "Nah, I should be thanking you for putting up with me and coming after me. You're amazing."
Celestia kissed his cheek and Pollux felt his face heat up. She snuggled closer to him and looked out over the camp. "You're pretty amazing yourself, if I do say so myself."
The next morning, two of Celestia's siblings were sent out for inspection duty and went on a search for their missing sister. They found Celestia and Pollux curled up together, sound asleep on the edge of the treeline.
A/N- Does anyone have any idea how refreshing it was to write this? I never see anything about children of Dionysus and as I am a Dionysus kid myself, this was really fun. Hope you enjoyed, and I'll have another Solangelo one shot coming soon. Feel free to leave requests or prompts and I'll hopefully get them done faster than what I have done.
