Chapter 15: Of Distant Mind

When the turtles and Shelby arrived back at the lair, Shelby escaped to her room to transform back into her human form. She huffed, falling against the door and letting out a sharp sob. She couldn't imagine anything more emotionally draining than talking to family members who considered her evil and a traitor.

She heard Mikey's footsteps run to the door long before he knocked. "Shelbs? Are you okay?"

"Yeah," she answered in a weak voice, "just let me get dressed."

She didn't hear Mikey leave. Realizing he wasn't going to, she sighed and forced herself to her feet, finding a pair of pajama pants and an old T-shirt to wear. The whole time, she tried to stifle the tears but it was no use. One after the other they rolled down her cheeks and every so often, she let out another sob before sucking in a very shaky breath.

Finally, Shelby opened the door. When Shelby and Mikey's eyes locked, Shelby couldn't stop her lip from quivering.

"What happened?" He asked.

"I- I saw my brothers." She cried out, shaking her head before covering her face. "I'm sorry, it's just a lot to process." She muttered.

Mikey didn't say anything at first. He just pulled Shelby into a hug and she wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face away right above his collar bone.

After a few moments Mikey muttered into Shelby's ear. "They didn't hurt you, did they?"

Shelby shook her head without lifting it. "No, we hardly fought at all." She paused, lifting her face away. Looking up, she could see Donnie was standing at the entrance of the hallway, syringe and vial at the ready for a blood draw. "Actually, Aiden got me with some sort of syringe-dart thing." She muttered.

Mikey followed Shelby's gaze to see Donnie and his face paled slightly as he looked back at Shelby. "What do you think that means?"

"I-" Shelby's word caught in her throat. Deep down, she knew. It was their worst fear realized. But she didn't want to say it. Saying it made it real and unavoidable. "I guess we'll find out soon."

She grabbed Mikey's hand and they walked together to Donnie's lab, where Donnie drew her blood and put it in the centrifuge.

Donnie took a deep breath as he stared at the machine before turning to Shelby. "So," he started, "I'm not a mind reader, but I have a feeling we're both expecting the same thing."

Shelby couldn't meet his eyes. "What's gonna happen?"

"I... have no idea. I'll be able to tell more when I see what chemicals were used." Donnie answered.

Shelby frowned and shook her head. "I have to leave."

"Going rogue, Bradford?" Shelby jumped slightly at Raph's voice and looked up to see Raph, Master Splinter, Leo, Casey, April, and Monica crammed in the doorway.

"She's not leaving." Leo stated. "Donnie, what are we thinking?"

"Well, I suspect they administered the mind serum." Donnie said in a small voice.

"And this is the mind serum that you suspect was in her mutagen?" Master Splinter asked.

"That's... correct." Donnie whispered.

"I can't stay here." Shelby said more assertively this time, trying to let go of Mikey's hand as she jumped off the table, but Mikey's hand stayed gripped around her's. "Mikey, let go."

Mikey looked like he was on the verge of tears. "No."

"I have to leave." She stressed, tugging her arm away. "I can't stay here anymore."

"Is it your first instinct to jump ship whenever things get hard?" Raph asked.

Shelby glared. "I'm trying to protect you, shell-for-brains. What do you thinks going to happen when this serum activates?"

Raph's lip curled at Shelby's response, but Casey jumped in. "I think what Raph was implying is that we don't want you to leave because of this. We'll figure something out."

"Yeah, we're here for you." April added.

Shelby tried to take in what they were saying, but her heart was beating so quickly from the stress of it all. Then, her vision blurred slightly, her ears started ring, and her head started to throb with a terrible headache.

"No," she said breathlessly, running forward to try and push her way through the crowd at the door, "it's too dangerous."

"Shelby." Master Splinter blocked her path, grabbing her shoulders and stooping down to her eye level. Shelby tried to look back, but all she could really pay attention to was the fact that her peripheral vision was going black. "I need you to take a deep breath. Panicking will only make the situation worse. We can figure this out together."

Monica pursed her lips. "Maybe we should let her go."

All the others looked at Monica as if she had grown a second head. "Read the room, Hawkeye." Raph snapped.

"Nobody wants her to leave." Leonardo added.

"Okay, that's great. I get it. You guys really care about her. I applaud it. But what about what she wants?" Monica asked. "I mean, from what I've gathered, she's about to be mind controlled like that scorpion mutant, right? She's not trying to be noble or flake when the situation gets tough. She's obviously trying to protect you guys."

"Yeah, but even if we take away the fact that we don't want her to leave, letting her go could mean giving her over to the Foot Clan." Donnie pointed out.

Shelby paled further, the temperature in the lab dropping. "I think I'm gonna be sick."

"I'll go grab some water." Casey stated, ducking out to jog to the kitchen.

Raph was still glaring at Monica. "Listen, you're new, so you don't know how we run things around here. But we don't really have the habit of abandoning our family in tough situations."

April looked at Raph with furrowed brows. "I didn't think you liked Shelby."

"Well- she's like an annoying little sister that I like to keep my distance from." Raph grumbled.

"Is she younger than us?" Mikey asked.

"Irrelevant." Shelby muttered as Casey arrived with the water. He sat with her on the ground, placing a hand on her shoulder as she took small sips.

"Yeah, we're getting so off-topic here. Donnie-" Leo turned to Donatello, who stood at attention, "can you make some sort of antidote?"

"I'll have no idea until I see the composition of the serum." Donnie stated. "In the meantime, maybe we should... restrain her. Just in case."

"Oh, so you won't let her leave but you'll chain her up like a dog." Monica stated, crossing her arms over her chest. "I don't think I can handle this conversation anymore." With that, she exited the lab.

Meanwhile, Shelby stared off into space as she took another small sip. The water helped her stomach settle from the previous somersaults it was doing but her headache felt like it was only getting worse and she was losing sensation in her fingers and toes. "Whatever you're gonna do, do it quickly." She whispered.

"Raph, go get the chains we used to restrain Leatherhead." Leo stated. Raph did not protest.

Shelby heard Mikey say something, but he sounded very far away. Too late, she realized she couldn't see or hear anything- well, she could, but it wasn't being processed into any kind of information in her brain. It was like she was isolated in her own mind, miles away from reaching the body she was trapped inside.

Stand up.

Shelby's body obeyed, causing Casey to scramble up as well. He must be speaking, his lips were moving and he was trying to look into Shelby's eyes. But Shelby was no longer in control.

Find a turtle.

Shelby scanned her surroundings, and the first turtle she laid eyes on was Mikey. He was very close, placing his hands on her shoulders- shaking her? Leo was approaching as well, saying something to Mikey with a stern expression on his face.

Perfect. Kill them.

Shelby's hands reached up and wrapped tightly around Michelangelo's throat. They stayed locked there for a couple moments, Mikey struggling to free himself, Shelby's grip stiff and unwavering. Both Casey and Leo worked to pry Shelby's hands away.

No! No, not like that. Shelby's hands let go and Leo pulled Mikey away from her. Transform into a wolf.

Shelby's body obeyed, contorting and popping until she was a white wolf. Raph was running forward with chains now. Okay, now kill them.

Shelby lunged forward, slamming hard into Raphael and sending him flying into a table. She continued to run at him, teeth bared and ready to bite down on what part of his body her teeth could find. Before she could reach Raph, Leo slammed into her side, veering her off course. If the hit caused Shelby any pain, it didn't show. With her mind shut down, her body kept working towards its goal. She pivoted around quickly and sank her teeth into Leo's shoulder. She let go and went to move her bite up to his neck, but a nunchuck chain wrapped around her muzzle and sealed it closed.

Shelby's eyes focused on the target pulling the chain. Mikey was trying to yank her off of Leo, his mouth moving as if he was shouting. It fell on deaf ears. Shelby muscled Leo off of her and raced at Mikey, slashing her claws across his plastron before he could even react. She pinned him down, shaking her head desperately to get the nunchuck chain off her muzzle. Before she could clear it, however, Master Splinter ran up behind her, striking the edge of his hand hard into her carotid. Shelby's body instantly buckled and fell limp onto Mikey's.

Damn it.
