09. the real weapon

09; the real weapon

The next night, the whole team met for a run down of how they were going to take down Schmidt and his army. So far, the only information they had was from Dr. Zola. Colonel Phillips stood at the maps while the Howling Commandos, Howard and Peggy sat at the table. Evelyn and Steve were at the top, the two top guns of this operation.

"Johann Schmidt belongs in a bughouse." Evelyn rolled her eyes. Of course he did. "He thinks he's a god and he's willing to blow up half the world to prove it, starting with the USA."

"Schmidt's working with powers beyond our capabilities." Stark reiterated. "You saw what his doctor did to Evie. He gets across the Atlantic, he will wipe out the entire Eastern Seaboard in an hour."

Evelyn tensed. "That's comforting," she muttered before returning to the job at hand. "How much time we got?"

The Colonel gave them a sigh. "According to my new best friend, under 24 hours."

This plan seemed to be unraveling fast. "Where is he now?" she asked.

"Hydra's last base is here..." he showed them a picture of a mountainside. "in the Alps, five hundred feet below the surface."

Jim scoffed when he looked at the picture. "So what are we supposed to do? I mean, it's not like we can just knock on the front door."

Steve's voice finally piped up. "Why not?" everyone turned to him in confusion, Evelyn included. "That's exactly what we're going to do." he smiled to Evelyn but it dropped once he realised she was not happy.

Once the Colonel dismissed them Evelyn had taken off to the back of the records room to pace. This mission, the stakes were too high, a lot of bad things could happen. She knew something in her serum was making her unable to kill Zola, Colonel Phillips told her, what's to say it didn't stop her from killing Schmidt? It would be smart, to create essentially a safety switch for your perfect weapon around your boss so it didn't harm him.

She would be useless.

Peggy knocked on one of the shelves. "Eve? Stop doing this, you're starting to worry us."

"Sorry, just collecting my thoughts."

"Yeah, you've been doing that a lot lately too." Peggy stepped closer. "Is it because of James, like I said it was neither yours or Steve's fault-"

"I'm not thinking about Bucky, Peggs."

"Then what are you thinking about. And please don't say nothing, that's highly annoying."

Evelyn huffed. "Just...the weight of what's about to happen. I mean it's a lot to take in."

Peggy nodded. "Yes, it is, but you don't have to go through it alone, neither does Steve, who is wondering if you are okay at the moment." Evelyn smiled, shaking her head at Steve's worry.

"Tell him I'll be out in a moment." her friend gave her a quick hug before returning to the meeting, but stopped at the door.

"Oh, Katherine's daughter wanted you to sign something, it's on your desk." Peggy said with a knowing, fond smile. Evelyn made her way over to the desk and searched for what the kid wanted to have signed. She already had a pen in her hand, twirling it between her fingers but it fell to the floor when she saw it.

It was a comic book with a cartoon version of her on the cover with the title: Lieutenant Liberty and Her Daring Adventures! Evelyn grinned, biting her lip before signing the book with a flourish. She knew she was in Steve's comic book as a secondary character, more of a love interest than anything but to have her own comic book, that was big deal for a woman. She was becoming her own superhero, just like her mother always wanted her to.

Someone tapped on her shoulder and she turned to see Steve with a smile. "Come on, Phillips wants to go over the-" he would've continued that sentence if Evelyn hadn't pecked him on the lips in the middle of it, catching him off guard. "What was that for?" he asked although he was not opposed to her doing it again.

"Nothing," she shrugged. "So, we're going to kill the Red Skull?" she said with a glint in her eye.

If only she knew who the Red Skull would be taking with him to his death.

-

The alps were a lot bigger up close, that was Evelyn's first thought surprisingly when she geared up to take down the Hydra factory located there. Not anything to do with the mission at hand, which was odd.

She hopped onto the truck that was boarding the Howling Commandos minus Steve who had taken the extravagant approach and made his way to the factory in plain sight so he could be captured and have secured a way in. Peggy's and the Colonel had taken to the forest so when the inevitable force of soldiers came to meet them, they would be destroyed.

But something was off, she didn't feel right. It wasn't sickness, that was impossible for she doubted with the tesseract energy running through her veins would allow any virus or flu to infect her body. She felt like she was looking at everything through a cloudy glaze on her eyes. Her head felt like lead and it felt like someone was whispering in her ears but she couldn't quite hear it yet.

Jim noticed this and looked over at her. "Eve, you alright?"

She nodded slowly, hesitantly, as if she was trying to convince herself. "Yeah, fine."

"If you think you can't-"

"I'm fine, Jim!" she snapped making him continue loading his gun.

"Ich weiß sie sind hier, Kriegerin."

Evelyn could hear the whispering as clear as day now. It belonged to the infamous Red Skull. She rubbed her temples. "Ignoriere mich nicht."

And as much as she wanted to she couldn't. She couldn't ignore him. He was infiltrating every part of her mind. "They have been holding you back, female warrior." He spoke in English this time. "Show them your true powers, what a Hydra weapon can do."

She began to dig her nails into her scalp as the rest of the group set up the equipment to infiltrate Schmidt's personal office. At the moment Steve was just being lead in. So that meant he would leave her alone. But before Schmidt turned his attention to Steve something was whispered in her ear.

"Show them the real you."

That sentence made her nails release her scalp, made her too calm and, unbeknownst to her, made her eyes glow their mystical blue. One man shouted to get ready, as Steve was about to say the signal but it was all a blur. Evelyn didn't feel like herself anymore, her face was hard, emotionless. Then Steve said the signal and their zip lines were thrown to the side of the mountain, locked on and they zip lined into the windows smashing it.

The room lit ablaze with gunfire and blue energy. Schmidt, amidst the chaos, found Evelyn who was busy choking a man with her powers. "Do you see this?" He shouted, pointing to the blue cube in it's container. "This created you, I created you. You belong with me!"

Evelyn released her hold on the Hydra soldier. "You told me to show them the real me, and I did. But I will never belong to you." she sneered.

Schmidt roared in anger, grabbing the blonde and slamming her against the wall. She struggled against his hold, ultimately kicking up her legs into his stomach and sending him backwards but it didn't knock him down. It just gave her enough time to run away to find the rest of her team. As she ran through the hallways, men shouted at her, charging towards her but she just crushed them into thin air. She was in no time to delay.

One guy came running at her but with no hassle, she disarmed him and grabbed his uniform, lifting him up. "Where's Captain America!"

He began chanting in German. This just made her angrier, her eyes were blazing, energy releasing from them. "Where is Captain America!?" She roared. Her free hand, now emitting the energy flew to his throat and she squeezed hard.

"In...hangar..." the man choked.

Evelyn gave him a sickly sweet smile, her eyes now clouded over completely with the glistening blue. "Thank you!" her elbow made contact with his face, knocking him out as he slumped to the floor. "Was that so hard?" She brushed her hands together before rushing to the hangar.

Soon she found herself in the middle of a giant battle between the SSR and Hydra. A smirk found it's way onto her lips. She grabbed an unsuspecting Hydra soldier and kicked his gun out of his hand before pushing him back so hard, blue rings followed him. Someone came up behind her but she elbowed their stomach, took out her knife and slashed at his throat.

This routine of lowering the hydra defence continued for her, each kill more ruthless than the last. Eventually her body was coated in an energy armour and every time she touched a person, a pulse of energy released from her hands.

She had just killed someone when a soft hand was placed on her shoulder. Her chest was heaving and when she turned around, Peggy was watching her with slightly nervous eyes. "Lieutenant, what are you doing?"

Evelyn blinked, her regular green eyes returning. She turned around and looked on her trail of destruction. "I'm showing them the real me."

Peggy sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Look, we must hurry, Schmidt has taken to his aircraft but Phillips and I have a plan, come on!" she took her friends hand both ran towards where Peggy wanted them to be.

-

They ended up in Schmidt's garage where his car lay, untouched. Phillips held up his keys. "Let's pray I know how to drive this thing, hop in."

"Wait, what about Steve?" Evelyn called, stepping into the car.

"That's who we're going to get." Peggy spoke up, settling in the car also.

The engine roared to life and they took off, racing through the hangar. "There he is!" Evelyn yelled over the engine, pointing to the star spangled man who had just knocked someone away with his shield. Phillips drove towards him, stopping right next to him.

"Get in!" he ordered, Steve getting into the passenger side.

He turned back to Evelyn who smiled comfortingly and he returned it. He scooted back a bit further to place a kiss on her cheek and although it was totally not the place or time, she blushed.

They drove straight to the Valkyrie who was slowly approaching the outside. Evelyn felt her heart hammer in her chest. She knew what Steve was going to do. "I should be going with you." she protested.

Steve shook his head. "If you got hurt, I would never forgive myself."

"He's hurt me, he needs to pay."

"I may not come back from this."

"All the more reason why I should go with you, we go down together."

"Evelyn, please," his eyes were pleading, but she was a little bit mad. "You hold things down here and I swear I will give him a few extra punches from you."

She felt like she was settling but his mind was set and she was not going to be able to change it. So as the came close to the wheels of the aircraft, and as he stood at the side of the car, she pulled him back and into her arms. She would not kiss him, kissing him meant she was saying goodbye and that was not happening.

"When you get back, and you are coming back, I'm going to need the whole story." She said, hugging him tighter.

When the separated, he was grinning. "Of course."

And then, the moment she sat down he was on the plane and she was down on the ground, left to hope that he would get back safe.

And she hated the feeling rising in her stomach that told her that wasn't going to happen.

A/N: Oh my god this chapter was a roller coaster and I'm actually really happy about it.

But the nEXT CHAPTER IS GOING TO HAVE SOME TEARS AND I CANT BELIEVE THAT THIS STORY HAS THREE CHAPTERS LEFT AND THEN IT'S DONE.

German according to google:

Ich weiß sie sind hier, Kriegerin. - I know you're here, Warrior.

Ignoriere mich nicht. - You will not ignore me.
