Facing the Facts

[Future]

I sat on a tree, watching the person that was on my hit list for this month. Sadly it was only five people, but it could be worse. For about a year, I have been the only that people they have been asking to go and assassinate. The person sat down on the rocks near the river whipping the blood off his hands, I just watched him as he killed a little girl who was in the woods. Why did I do anything? Well because that girl would have to die seeing me anyways. I watched as tears flooded down his face as he cleaned his hands and clothes, but it was too late, the girls blood already stained his shirt and pants. I softly jumped down from where I was hiding and creeped up to the guy. Before I could attack him, someone screamed behind me. The guy turned around, looking right at me, and he screamed himself. I covered his mouth and went behind him. This all took me mere seconds when I watched the guy fall to the ground. Dead. I grabbed one thing from the guy and left the area. In these time of days, I don’t have to worry about my fingerprints, only being seen. I got back up into the tree and left the area. I slowly walked back to the ‘Shack’ and walked in. A guy stood there waiting and I sighed handing him the amulet from my kill.

“I guess the rumors are true, you can really track down someone fast.” the guy spoke. I simply nodded sitting down at a really dirty desk. A bag of money was set in from of me and the guy left. “I best be off.” I whispered and left without another word. I made sure I wasn’t being followed before I spotted another house in the deep woods. I opened the door and someone pointed a bow at me. “Oh hey dude.” the guy smiled putting it down. “Hey Sky.” I said back sitting down on the couch, looking out the window. “How was your, ‘day.’” I nodded for my answer, never really wanting to be talking about my life much. I have known Sky for many years, but has changed in both of us.

[Year and a half earlier]

“Hurry up Mitch!” Sky yelled running around his castile. Sky was the prince of the SkyKingdom and was soon to be king. I, on the other hand, was going to be his bodyguard. I was already part of the army train, and getting really good almost everything. When Sky and I were younger he found me begging for food on the streets and took me in. He taught me how to fight and use a bow, and after a long time training with it. I was the best in the Kingdom.

“Mitch!” I heard someone knocking on my door. “Mitch wake up today is the day!” he called again. I groaned then sat up. Today I would be taking a test to see if I was worthy of even being a guard. I was top in the class with many things, but fighting with a sword, I was at the bottom. I hope they still choose me, even though I can’t fight with a sword. I got fully dressed and walked out of my room getting a hug from my best friend. “You ready buddy?” he asked me. I smiled and nodded, “You get to choose your bodyguard right?” I asked him, making sure it was true. “Yes, my father and Great Grandfather did, so I don’t see why not.” he smiled at me more. We walked to the fields and I was left alone with the group. A guy, or Head Guard, walked on the field and stood on top of a stand, “Greeting trannies of SkyKingdom. Today you will be going through many test to see if you are tough enough to be guard, and then today the Prince is picking his personal bodyguard.” I heard of the guys whisper behind me, “We all know who he is going to be picking.” the whole group started to around the group. I knew they were talking about me, but I have beaten them multiple times, they knew I was good at what I did. “Gentlemen, and lady, we have a lot of things to do, in a short time. Gear up, and get ready for battle.” We walked into our changing rooms, and get ready. The lady, or Alison, walked to a personal one for, so she didn’t have to get dressed in front of us.

“Yo Mitch, good luck man.” I heard my friend, Jake, call over to me. “You too man.” I called back getting fully ready. I grabbed my bow when I heard a bunch of whispers going through the whole room. I turn around to see Sky standing in the doorway. He has never been back here before, but I smiled and walked over. “Hello Sir.” I smirked at Sky. “A gift.” he winked and left. “Good luck to you all.” and Sky left. I looked at the others and they were all laughing their heads off. I took my gift to my spot and opened it. Inside there was a beautiful silver bow inside. I pulled it out and held it in my hand. I notice this was the bow that I first shot. “Wow that is a beauty.” Jake sat down next to me. “Your boyfriend give that to you?” I give him a look, then looked back at the bow. I heard the Head Guard yelling for us to hurry up and get out there. I put my bow over my shoulder and grabbed a lot of arrows. Today is the day, today is the day that I show off. Jake and I were the last one’s out of the room and onto a new field. “Ladies and Gentlemen, today these men and women will be showing off their best skills, to prove if they are worthy to be in the Kingdom. Each name will be called one, by one and they will have a task to prove themselves, they cannot pick what they do. So pray it is what they are good at.” everyone in the seating area starting to clap. “First up, Alison Chase. The first women to ever be placed in guard training.” she walked forward with confidence, but I watched as one of her arms shook with fear. She walked up in front of the person, we are suppose to fight, and then nodded. The Head Guard grabbed a piece of paper out of a bowl and read it outloud. “Hand to hand combat.” I smirked knowing she was the top for that section, I just beat her just once on it. Alison put down her sword and got her hands up and ready. The guard that we were using for this was a really big guy towards her. “Three, Two, One, fight.” She was up there for a good minute before the guy being pinned to the ground and hitting his hand against the ground signaling her to let go. Everyone clapped again while Alison walked off the stage. A few names went by, and it felt like forever when I heard my name being called. “Mitch Hughes.” I took a deep breath in and walked to the stage. I looked at my friend who nodded and smiled at me. I nodded also and waiting for what I had to do. “Mitch has to do,” he sticks his hand in the bowl. “Sword fighting.” fear shot through my whole body, that is the one thing I absolutely suck at. I took another deep breath in and lifted my bow off my shoulder and onto the ground, I picked up a iron sword and got into my fighting stance.

“Three, Two, One, fight.” I heard the guy and my opponent ran at me with full force swinging his sword left then right. I quickly dodged the first blow, and then the second. “Fight little girl.” I heard him say, and I lifted my sword up when he was slamming it over my head. I used all my strength holding it there for second and pushed him off. “Come on Mitch,” I head Jake yell. I got up into a stand position and he started to attack me again. I kept dodging and blocking his blows, not knowing when to take a chance and fight back. I found an opening to attack, but it was for a tackle not a sword hit. I took the chance kicking the sword out of my opponent’s hand pinned him to the ground. He smirked and tapped twice on the board. I let up and handed him his sword back. “You are good, but that wasn’t sword fighting.” he spoke softly to me. “Mitch will be disqualified for not doing his task.” the Head Guard spoke up, “What I defeated him, I did as you asked.” I spoke up looking at him. “You still didn’t do your task. Now go back into the group. I looked up at Sky, who, had a sad face on him. He stood up and looked at the Head Guard. “I want Mitch to have a redo.” he spoke up to him. “Sorry sir, but you know the rule. I don’t care if he is your friend. You can’t do this to him.” I looked at Sky who was really shocked at what the Head Guard said. I looked at Sky as he sat down covering his face. I guess I won’t be his bodyguard after all. Jake patted my back and sighed. “Sorry man, you were good up there.” I looked at him and half smiled. “Can the Head Guard talk to Sky like that?” I asked him. Jake thought for a second. “No, but you know that guy has been taking care of Sky for years, he is like a father.” I nodded slowly not seeing the Head Guard ever take care of Sky. After the trails Sky walked down to the fields looking at all of us. The Head Guard stopped Sky and whispered something to him. Sky’s eyes looked shocked and he shook his head. “That isn’t fair.” I could hear him say. “My da-” The Head Guard stopped him, he nodded and looked at all of us. “You all have fought, and showed that you can kick butt.” Sky looked at us all. “Today I will be choosing my bodyguard, and a someone to lead their part of the army.” I saw him swallow and look at Alison, “Alison, you were one of the top students in the class, I have appointed you Leader, of the Gray Army.” everyone patted her back, she had a great smile on her face.

“The next person I choose will be my bodyguard, my protector. If chosen you can say no, and I will choose again.” he stopped. “Jake, you showed great sword skills and fighting skills. I appoint you as bodyguard.” my mouth dropped open and looked at Jake, the guys were patting his back saying he should. “Thank you sir, but no. You have someone else that is more worthy than me.” Jake spoke up, he was a true friend. The Head Guard walked over and whispered a few things to Jake, his eyes widen and slowly nodded. “I accept.” he spoke up and walked over to Sky. I looked confused and sadness with anger shot through me. My friend, MY BEST FRIEND, chose someone else. “You all can leave now.” the Head Guard spoke up smirking at me. I turned around and walked the group. I was alone, I didn’t trust no one, I wanted Sky to die. I wanted a lot of people dead. Alison grabbed my shoulder and pulled me aside. “I-I am sorry Mitch, I know Sky is your best friend, you should be at his side, not Jake.” she said, I didn’t look at her in the eyes, I could feel tears swelling in my eyes. “I heard something, that when I was changing.” her voice became a whisper. “You were set up to fail.” Alison left to her changing area as I walked in with all the guys. I didn’t want to say anything, to anyone. I got undressed and looked at the silver bow that Sky had given me. I put it in my locker and shut it. I walked out, but before I could leave, David, one of the guys in the group grabbed my shoulder.

“Yo Mitch, I am sorry man. I know how much being a BodyGuard meant to you.” pushed off his hand and left the area. I walked around the village as people were starting to reopen their shops and windows to their houses. I walked slowly and looked at every shop. I sat down next to the apple stand and leaned my back against it. The Apple Shopkeeper was an older man, and very sweet. He was the one who found me first begging for food, and brought me to Sky’s father. I looked up to see an apple in my face, and him smiling at me. “You don’t ever come here when you are happy.” he smirked as I took the apple from his hand. “My friend betrayed me. Both of them.” he forced me to stand up, and whipped off the dust, “I know the feeling, but there is always those people, you will one day find friends that you can trust, and they will never leave you.” I smiled and took a bite of the apple and smiled. “The best one yet.” I would always say that. The Apple Shopkeeper laughed and we walked into his house. He gave me some tea and we talked for a really long time. I explained to him what happened, and what Alison said. He just nodded. “It seems someone doesn’t like you, but I don’t know how! You are a great kid, and a great fighter.” I smiled again, and he smirked. “I should be heading home soon,” I told him. “Okay I will walk you out.” he opened the door for me and I smiled, but my smile turned to a horrified face. I watched as a sword plunged into his gut and back out again. “NO!” I yelled grabbing him. “Remember, you are a good person.” I looked up to see who was holding the sword. “Sir?” I spoke up seeing the Head Guard smirking at me. “Bu-but why?” tears streamed down my face. “Don’t ask me why, ask yourself, and why you killed him.” he tossed the sword towards me. It was mine, the very one that had my name on it. My eyes widen as two guards grabbed my arms.

“Mitch Hughes, you are under arrest for the murder of a shopkeeper.” my eyes widen even bigger, I kicked the two guards and ran out of the house. I had the blood of the shopkeeper on my clothes and hands. I quickly got into my room, in the castle, and took off my clothes putting them into the fire place. Wait stop, why am I doing this. I didn’t kill him, he was my friend. I thought to myself. I still did it anyways, and cleaned off the blood. I need to go and find Sky right now. I put on new clothes and ran out of my room. I heard a lot of talking in the throne room, “Sir but I am sorry, your friend Mitch murder an innocent shopkeeper, he will have to found and jailed. Before he kills again.” I covered my mouth as a snuck in and hid behind some chairs. I watched Sky face look sad, and he covered it as the guards left. Sky never liked having guards around, he started that when we were really young. I made sure no one was around before stepping out of my hiding spot. “Sky before you call your guards, let me explain that what the Head Guard said was a lie.” I said quickly and stood in front of me. Sky looked shocked that I was still here. “I knew you wouldn’t kill the Apple Man, that is what he called him, he was your friend. I need to get you out of here. The Head Guard, he will kill you if he knows you are standing here.” at that moment, like he was being called or something, I felt a strong hand grab my right arm and pin it against my back. I felt as my face was slammed against the floor of the room, “Stand down guard.” I heard Sky yell walking up to him. “Sir stand back he is very dangerous. Mitch didn’t just kill the shopkeeper, but a bystander as well.” I fought against the weight of the guard. “Lie all lies,” I growled at him, “I may be mad, but I wouldn’t just kill people. I would never do that.” I felt my hands tied up behind my back and pulled to my feet. “Then explain the sword at the shopkeepers house.” one of the guard, he had a black eye, walked in and showed it to everyone there. “Is that your sword?” he asked me. “Yes.” I point my head down towards the ground. “He wouldn’t, he wouldn’t hurt anyone. I have known this guy too long.” at least Sky was on my side with all of this. I felt my chin be raised to look at Sky, tears were down my face. I looked at my friend, the person who I protected, who taught me everything I know right now, and much more. We had something between us, it meant as a sorry. He placed his head against mine and walked back. “Take him away.” I heard Sky after backing up. I didn’t even look up after that. I was pushed into a cell and I was untied from the ropes. I just walked away from the cell door and sat down at the back wall. Something in me was changing, I could feel it. The feeling of loss, anger, and the biggest one hatred.
