Out of Control

The next day you and Steve meet Tony and Bruce down in the lab. " Ok, so I can't deny last night in the kitchen. I still can't explain how or what happened to you in my room weeks ago. But I'm still skeptical about the light bulbs you claim I overloaded. There just isn't enough evidence to support your theory."  You say trying to keep impartial scientific thought.

" Well, for one those weren't the only events. When you first woke up, you were getting hysterical." Tony sits down as he enlightens you.

" I barely remember that." You know that's not unusual when waking up from head injuries.

Bruce turns to you, " We had to sedate you not because you were upset, that was understandable in the situation, but the monitors were glitching and sparks started to fly."

This is the first time you are hearing about this. You turn to Steve for reassurance. " Is this true?"
He looks at you, " Yes, I was there right beside you."
" Why is this the first time anyone is telling me this?" You say frustratedly.

" And a spider and a birdie, informed me of another lightbulb event in the kitchen several days ago, " Tony says. " Jarvis?"
" Yes, Sir ?" The voice comes over the lab speakers.
" Was there an issue with the lights in the kitchen the other day?" Tony inquires.
"Yes, Sir, I registered an influx of power while Mr. Rogers and Ms. Monroe were in the kitchen. Ms. Romanoff also reported an issue with lights at the same time. Will there be anything else, sir?"

Tony looks over at you " Do you believe me now?"

"Ok, I believe you, but I had no idea it was happening. I felt a wave pass through me when I knocked you down in my room. Last night in the kitchen I didn't feel anything until after it happened. It left an oddly cool sensation in my hands, but not the other times."  You recall.

Tony looks at you with a raised eyebrow, " It's safe to say your mind was preoccupied with more pressing matters at the time."

You look to Steve as he uncomfortably clears his throat.  You gently bite your lower lip. " I would agree with that conclusion."

Bruce interjects, "Well, we had already suspected that your emotions might be effecting the Mind stone fragments, but this gives us an initial confirmation. We need to do more in depth testing, though."

You take a deep sigh and shrug your shoulders. " Great more tests, when do we start?"

Tony looks at you a little surprised. " I thought you lived your life around testing and research?"

"Yeah, I did. Until I realized what the poor lab rat felt like." You say with a half hearted chuckle. You spend the next three days trying to heighten your emotions to stimulate the fragments but with little to no results.

You walk into the lab this morning to find Bruce, Steve and Tony having a heated debate. " Ok, who peed in whose Cheerios this morning?" You say to break the obvious tension between the three men.

Steve looks at Tony but talks to you. " I'm telling him, his next avenue of testing is out of the question."

Tony keeps locked with Steve, you've never seen them butt heads like this before. You look at Bruce, "Can you tell me what this is all about?"
Before Bruce can answer Steve blurts out, " He wants to bring Loki in with the scepter to work with you!"

Bruce looks at you and quietly responds. " Look, I don't necessarily like the idea either but I think Tony is right and this is the next logical step. Loki knows that scepter and understands the Mind stone better than anyone."

You stop and look from Bruce to Tony and then to Steve. You can see the concern in his eyes and you understand the experiences they all have had with Loki and the scepter. He is also a different person now, but still not completely trusted by the entire team though. Your rational mind takes control. " Steve, I have to agree with them. Logically speaking, he is the next educated choice. I do understand your concern with his past and the scepter's past but we've gotten nowhere with understanding the connection to the fragments."
You can see the hurt and defeat in Steve's face when he hears your words. He walks out of the lab without saying a word to you. You follow after him, you can feel yourself getting angry at his reaction. He knows you are still a scientist, how can he expect any other choice from you. Why must he be so damn stubborn sometimes? "Steve, please come back."

He continues walking away from you. "I can't right now Lark."

Who does he think he is! This sends your anger over the edge. " I SAID STOP!"  Bruce and Tony hear you yelling and come  into the hallway. Just like before you feel the wave coming and then rush past you. Bruce and Tony watch as Steve is literally frozen mid stride. " LOOK AT ME!" Steve is suddenly spun around and moves several feet toward you, still frozen unable to move his body. As he does, he sees your eyes glowing with neon blue flames.

Tony yells at you, " LARK, YOU NEED TO STOP! NOW!" Tony's voice snaps you back out of the anger. As you do, you see the shock in Steve's eyes as he is finally released from your hold.

" What did I just do?!?!" You start to panic. "Steven I didn't mean to" you look to Tony who is now holding your arm. "Tony, what did I do?  What is wrong with me?" You fall into Tony's arms sobbing. "Help me."
Steve understands you were not in control and moves towards you but you put your hand up. "No, please stay away from me. I don't want to hurt you." You say through tears. You couldn't live with yourself if something happened to him.

Tony looks up at Steve, he sees the worry etched across his face. " Just give us a little while. We'll take care of her. I promise." Steve can hear the weight in his last words.

"Ok, but I won't be far." Steve stands, watching you sob into Tony's arms as he and Bruce guide you back into the lab. He can see them sit you down and inject you with a sedative to help calm you.

A few hours later you've left the lab calmer and heavily  tranquillized. Tony, Nat and Bruce are taking turns sitting with you on the balcony. You've wrapped yourself in a blanket and won't look at anyone. Steve finally approaches as Nat comes back inside but still not taking her eyes off of you. " Nat, how is she?" He can barely get the words out. Nat just looks at him and hugs him,

"I wish I could say Ok but I'd be lying. She's retreated deep, Steve. I don't like it." She continues to watch you.

"I'd like to try and talk to her if that's Ok?" Steve looks for Nat's approval.
"Yeah, you can try. Maybe you can bring her around. Just go slow." She gives him a kiss on the cheek as she squeezes his arm before stepping away to the bar.

Steve steps out on to the balcony and gently kneels down in front of you. The blankness he sees in your eyes starts to rip at his heart. "Lark. Hey can you hear me?" He gets no reaction from you. He touches your hand and tries again. "Lark, come back please?" There is a slight tremble in his voice.

You look down and slowly start to focus on him." Steve?" You whisper.
"I'm right here." There's a small sound of relief in his voice.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean for that to happen." You say with little emotion because of the tranquilizer Bruce has you on. You just blankly stare at his face.
" I know you didn't." He reassures you.
"Please don't hate me."
"I could never hate my best girl." He says as he squeezes your hand a little tighter.

Bruce had been standing there for a moment but didn't want to interrupt. " I thinks it's time to take her to her room for the night. Don't worry we will all take shifts staying with her, but she'll probably be like this until morning."

"Bruce, I'm worried. I don't like seeing her like this." Steve finally looks away from you.

"Steve, I had to give her some pretty potent tranquilizers just so her metabolism didn't burn them off right away. She'll be more herself tomorrow. I swear."
