Chapter 19
By the time that Kamille woke up, almost all of the street noise had ceased, and it was getting dark. Jason hadn’t moved from his spot on the floor, so her feet were still propped up on his lap. For a moment, she just lay there, staring up at the gathering clouds and trying to guess how long it would be before rain fell from them.
They sat like that, brother and sister, just staring into space. Both thinking intently on completely different topics. One of them hadn’t let his mind stray from the question that had plagued him since Super had left. The other, was blissfully unaware of the world, letting her thoughts wander from subject to subject at random.
The first raindrop fell from the sky, and dropped itself onto the tip of Jason’s nose. More followed, and soon, the twins were soaking wet with no shelter from the downpour. Kamille was the first to get up, snapping her brother out of his trance and pulling him to his feet. “Come on, if we don’t hurry, we could catch pneumonia.” She whispered to him, unsure of why, it wasn't like anyone was going to hear them above this rain.
“Okay, let’s go find somewhere to stay. It doesn’t seem Optic is coming back from his break any time soon, so we gotta fend for ourselves until he returns.” Jason got up and walked over to the edge of the building, his silhouette blurred by the rain. “We didn’t go too far from Sylvia’s, right? We could always go back.”
“And fall asleep on a pincushion? No thank you.”
“They aren’t everywhere...”
Kamille raised her eyebrow, not that he could see it, and crossed her arms. “mmhmmm.”
“...okay, maybe they are everywhere…”
“That’s what I thought. There’s probably a hotel somewhere around here that’s cheap enough for us to stay at.” She looked down at her bright orange suit, then glanced at her brothers purple one. “Yeah, nevermind. We’d probably be sent to an asylum, or directed to the nearest convention center before we can explain ourselves.”
Jason nodded, “not to mention we're broke, so we wouldn’t be able to pay for it anyways.”
They both shivered as a cold wind cut through their suits. The fabric may be bulletproof, but it did nothing to keep out the cold. Kamille began climbing down the slippery wall-face of the building, Jason in tow. They had to find some kind of shelter soon, or they might not be healthy enough to help anyone.
Slowly and carefully, they made their way down the brick building; ignoring the miniature waterfalls that flowed onto their heads from the gutter above. Anyone who had been out and about earlier had retreated to the safety of their homes, and there weren’t many people who wished to drive their cars on the quickly forming river that was the street; so the area was deserted (save for the occasional half-drowned cat).
They were about 10 feet above the ground when the brick that Jason was holding onto fell out of place. Startled, he fell from the wall, crashed into Kamille, and sent them both freefalling to the sidewalk; where they lay, sprawled out and in pain, on the concrete.
They tried to get up, but Jason’s ankle was sticking out at a gross angle, and Kamille didn't want to hurt it more than it already had been. She thought she heard Jason muttering something about foreshadowing and abandoned houses from her right, but couldn’t be sure due to the rain. So they sat there, backs propped up against the wall, shivering and shaking against the cold.
It was about an hour later when the rain finally started to let up, and by that time, Jason had fallen asleep on Kamille's shoulder. She barely considered the fact that they were in front of a building, and therefore in clear view of the sidewalk until…
“Goodness Gracious! What happened here?!” A higher pitched, slightly accented voice asked.
Instantly Kamille's head snapped up to see the speaker, and was immensely relieved. He looked just like Optic, so he must be one of his brothers.
The man had the same style suit as the other brothers, except his was almost completely white, with light blue laces, pockets, and mask. He was also wearing a blue surgical mask as well, so there wasn't much of his face that wasn't covered up by some sort of fabric.
He hurried over, tripping over his feet a couple times as he did so. “Oh my, Super really did a number on you!” He knelt down next to Jason and did a quick analysis of his foot.
Kamille blocked him with her hand when he tried to touch it, “wait. We don't know your name, nor do we know why you are here. Mind enlightening me?”
The doctor backed off a bit, “oh I'm so sorry, of course. I am Retina, one of Optic's brothers. But since I've never really liked that name...you can call me Alexi. Alexi von’ Schmaltz. Or just Dr. Schmaltz, I don't have a preference.”
He did a little bow and smiled goofily. “Super and I are great friends actually, so when he Optic called him in anger, and Super returned from his mission frustrated; I thought I'd stop by as well to do damage control...and I am glad that I did. Any longer out here in the rain and you would have caught cold!” he waved his hand around in the air, not really signaling anything, just for the sake of doing it.
“So, Alexi, while it is nice to meet you, Jason's health takes top priority. Should I wake him up? Or would it be better if he was asleep.” Kamille asked, shifting slightly so Jason's mop of black hair fell onto her wet lap instead of her equally-soaked, sore shoulder.
“It does not matter at the moment, as we are only moving him out of sight, but it would probably be better if we did not have to carry a ragdoll. I’d say wake him up.” Schmaltz stood up and shook some of the water off of his boots,“Let’s move him behind the building -I mean, if you're okay with that.” He nervously stuttered as he began helping Kamille (and, by extension, Jason) up out of her personal puddle that had formed underneath them during the thunderstorm.
Very gently, Kamille shook Jason awake, and introduced him to Dr. Schmaltz; getting only a small grunt in answer. Together, Alexi and Kamille half-dragged-half-carried Jason through the alleyway between the buildings and leaned him up against the back wall.
Alexi winced as they set him down, and hastily tried to hide his hand. Kamille saw it though, and was hit with a wave of confusion. Alexi’s hand was completely wrapped in bandages, though no blood could be seen seeping through. “What happened to your hand?” Kamille asked, propping Jason’s misshapen ankle up on her lap.
The doctor smiled and waved off the question with his good hand, “I had a cooking incident a few days ago. It seems boiling water should not be carried with one hand.” he chuckled to himself, “I am not a good cook.”
Kamille laughed uncertainly, while the story he provided was valid, she didn’t fully believe him. Something about his nervous sweating and quick breathing gave off an “I’m lying” vibe that Kamille was quick to pick up on.
“Now, before I can heal it, we will need to set the bone back to where it’s supposed to be.” Alexi informed them, both of Jason’s tired eyes widened in realization, but didn’t have enough time to protest before Dr. Schmaltz had grabbed his foot.
CRACK!
An unholy cry of pain escaped from Jason’s lips, and Alexi had tears in his eyes for some unknown reason.
He wiped them away with the back of his good hand, “sorry, sorry, so sorry. I shouldn't be crying, I'm not the one with a broken foot. I just hate it when people are in pain.” He sighed remorsefully, “But, unfortunately, that particular form of pain was necessary, unless you want to be carried around for the rest of your life.”
Dr. Schmaltz rolled up his sleeves and pulled off the bandages on his hand, revealing the perfectly pristine skin underneath. “Oh good. It’s healed.” A neon green fire appeared in the palm of his previously-injured hand, sending sparks up into the air. “Now I can begin.”
