Passing Busses - Part 2
This is a collaboration with boicalledari and Part 1 can be found in their book called "Grumbo: One Shot". I hope you enjoy what we've come up with. (Mine is probably very clearly inferior. I may have tried to guess times and maybe gave Grian a car for... reasons. Also, going off a bus garage in my town that you'd have to drive to get there from Grian's (technically my) house. I also may or may not have assumed several things so I didn't have to keep pestering Ari with questions.)
Prompt: Mumbo and Grian are bus drivers and they radio to each other all the time, even though they probably shouldn't. One day the new guy is caught eavesdropping on their conversation, how will Mumbo and Grian take it when they find out.
. . .
"You're Iskall, right?" Mumbo asks the man with a beard and a diamond eye. "Yep, that's me!" Iskall says with a grin. Grian was staring and silent. If his cheeks were rosy before, they were even more so now. He shook his head. "I'm Grian, that's Mumbo. For future reference." He spoke fast for some reason. "I'm gonna step outside for a moment..." He fled the scene into the cold. The other two men shared a look. Half confused, half concerned. "Should we...?" Iskall started. "He doesn't step out very often. Sometimes when we're alone and he starts staring at me, he says he needs to step outside. Usually just for a few minutes. He'll be back soon. While we wait, what's your favorite flavor of cake?" Mumbo tried to strike up a conversation while his friend was outside.
Grian paced back and forth with his hands in his hair, face hot and a stomach full of butterflies and knots. Holy crows he's cute and he's in there with Mumbo, who's also cute. Why do they have to have this effect on me? I just want to have a normal conversation with my friends. He stopped pacing and rubbed his face. He turned and walked back into the room and to the other dudes talking about him. "You're back, you good?" Grian nods his head.
The conversation continues for a while until the subjects got slightly more personal. The question of sexuality somehow came up and Grian nearly choked on nothing. Mumbo seemed completely okay with the idea of talking about this, while Grian was panicking and Iskall was staring at his lap, face red. Grian checked his watch. "My goodness, it's already nine, I should be getting home. Got... things to do." He quickly stood up from his chair and nearly knocked it over. "I'll see you tomorrow, Mumbo, and maybe you too Iskall." He fled the scene. He climbed into his car and started the engine, brushing off the snow while it warmed. He drove home, turned off his car, and sat in his driveway with his head on the steering wheel, a long annoyed groan left his mouth. He got out of his car, still groaning, walked upstairs, still clad in his shoes and coat, and fell on his bed. He sat up and pulled his coat off and kicked off his shoes, not even bothering to put anything where it was supposed to be, and crawled under his covers. He fell asleep thinking about the two boys he fled from.
. . . (?)
He woke up to the sound of his alarm screeching in his face. After summoning all the will-power he could possibly possess, he pulled the warm blankets off his body and stood up in the seemingly chilly air and stretched. He was finding this morning he didn't give a pack of poorly packaged piece of horse poo about anything. So he put on his coat that was laying on the floor and his shoes in opposite corners of the room and left the house to drive to the bus garage. As he's driving on the freeway in the far left lane, a patch of the road ahead was fairly slushy, a semi-truck was driving next to him, there was no good way for him to slow down save a few miles. He hit the slushy patch and started to hydroplane...
His front end slipped right under the trailer and hit the back wheels, it all happened so fast, he felt the collision into the concrete barrier and slid to a stop. Glass from the windows coated the floor and his legs, his neck hurt somewhat, his breathing was fast-paced and his heart was racing. A car pulled over some number of feet behind him and looked in, a woman asked if he was okay. The man in the red sweater could only nod, shaken up and disbelieving of his survival. His ears were ringing as the woman let him out through the trunk of his brutally smashed car as he looked around in the left lane of the highway for his phone. He found it a hundred feet forward of where the crash happened. It had flown through the windshield and landed in the snow. It still worked and he felt a panicked relief wash over him as he unlocked it and called Mumbo.
Mumbo was about to call Grian and ask where he was when the man in question called. He answered and heard nothing but freeway noise. This immediately set off alarm bells in his head. "Grian? What's going on, are you okay?" Grian hung up. Now he was really worried. He received a blurry picture of Grian's car, the front end was torn up and the sides were smashed in. He got another call, this time it sounded like he was in an ambulance instead of on the road.
"M-Mumbo? I'm okay. I'm alive."
THANK GOD. "Grian! Where are you now, where are you going, do I need to pick you up?"
"I'm heading t-to the hospital right now in an a-ambulance to get looked over. I don't ha-have a ride home, so please p-pick me up?"
He's already walking swiftly back to his car. He starts driving to what would be the hospital nearest Grian's wreck. As he's driving, he tells his virtual assistant to text Iskall, whose number he got last night, that Grian was in a crash and that they can't meet up again together tonight, after that, he tells the robot to text False that Grian and him won't be driving today and that they'd need someone to cover for the same reason. He arrives at the place and rushes in to ask the front desk lady if Grian was here. "Yeah, I'm here." He looks to his right and there stands Grian. He runs over and hugs him gently but tight. Pure relief runs through his veins. Grian's arms wrap around Mumbo. "I-I can't believe I didn't say it to you y-yesterday. I'm gay and I love you, I c-could've died today..." Grian says, then Iskall bursts through the doors and hugs both of them. They all wrap their arms around each other, and Grian admits something else. "Iskall, I was super sparked by you last night, and this is really sudden, but I think I like you too." He looks back and forth between the other two. Mumbo and Iskall share a look and they both kiss one of his cheeks.
They drove Grian home to recover that day, holding hands and blushing, relieved and happy their friend was minimally harmed and that they could love each other to the ends of time itself.

(Jesus that ending is so, so corny and that unnecessary wreck thing nearly made me cry from remembering things and this is so just a trainwreck in an Architech ship fic. As bad as it probably is, I'm proud of what I did. Thanks to Ari for doing this collab thing with me, I had lots of fun and loved what they did with theirs. I need to rethink my endings...)
