Hermit's Wands and What They Mean
What are the Hermit's wands and how do they relate to their personality?
Everything in quotes are from these two articles from Pottermore AKA Wizarding World -->
Bdubs - Larch, Unicorn hair, 9 ⅓, slightly springy
"Strong, durable and warm in colour, larch has long been valued as an attractive and powerful wand wood. Its reputation for instilling courage and confidence in the user has ensured that demand has always outstripped supply. This much sought-after wand is, however, hard to please in the matter of ideal owners, and trickier to handle than many imagine. I find that it always creates wands of hidden talents and unexpected effects, which likewise describes the master who deserves it. It is often the case that the witch or wizard who belongs to the larch wand may never realise the full extent of their considerable talents until paired with it, but that they will then make an exceptional match."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
The wand is stubborn, and it's highly valued. Strong, durable, confident, courageous: that's Bdub-a-dubs for you.
"They (unicorn core wands) are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard."
- Wand Cores, Wizarding World
Once again, a wand that's as stubborn as our favourite fun- I mean, average sized builder. (No, I wasn't gonna call you fun-sized, Bdubs. Okay, maybe I was-)
Longer wands are attracted to bigger personalities, rather than the actual size of the witch or wizard. Look me in my virtual eyes and tell me Bdubs has a small personality. I dare you.
Wand flexibilities reflect their user's will to change, adaptability, and their own general flexibility as a person. As I've said, Bdubs is one stubborn guy, but he can still adapt fairly well when he wants/needs to.
Doc - Ebony, Dragon heartstring, 10 ¾, stiff
"This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider, ebony wand owners have been found both among the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix and among the Death Eaters. In my experience the ebony wand's perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
Tell me that this doesn't accurately describe the GOAT Father.
"It (a dragon heartstring wand) is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental."
- Wand Cores, Wizarding World
Doc's actually pretty accident-prone. He:
- Accidentally started a war
- Accidentally started a rivalry with Bdubs with a house
- Well... you'll see what happens in the future of this timeline.
Doc also has a big personality, and he'd also look really awkward with a tiny wand. Apparently, wands also occasionally appreciate the height of the person they want as their user.
Grian - Dogwood, Phoenix feather, 12 ½, whippy
You remember what I wrote in Chapter Three, right? If not, reread it. Quirky, excited, energetic, lots of puppy energy, but also a force to be reckoned with? Sounds like our favourite red-sweatered gremlin, don'tcha think?
"They (phoenix feather wands) show the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord, a quality that many witches and wizards dislike."
- Wand Cores, Wizarding World
Grian can be a bit of a wild card at times, so I figured his wand would be the same way.
This guy has a pretty big personality. Also, I thought it'd be hilarious for such a small person to have a foot long wand and still be able to beat the crap out of someone in a duel with it.
He's pretty flexible and willing to change, I think. Agree or disagree in the comments.
Impulse - Red oak, Unicorn hair, 9, slightly unyielding
"You will often hear the ignorant say that red oak is an infallible sign of its owner's hot temper. In fact, the true match for a red oak wand is possessed of unusually fast reactions, making it a perfect duelling wand. Less common than English oak, I have found that its ideal master is light of touch, quick-witted and adaptable, often the creator of distinctive, trademark spells, and a good man or woman to have beside one in a fight."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
The... The dude's name is "Impulse". Do I even need to explain?
Apparently, unicorn wands will "die" if they're not taken care of properly. Impulse is somewhat responsible, so I think he'd take on the challenge.
At this point, I'm going to start skipping over the wand lengths and go straight to the flexibilities.
Impulse seems like he'd be willing to change, but might not be super happy about it sometimes.
Iskall - Red oak, Dragon heartstring, 10 ¼, Unbending
*look above*
Iskall seems like they'd be an excellent dueler. Remember the whole hitman thing from Season 6? They had pretty decent reaction times (well, maybe not every time), and they could easily pack a punch when needed.
Accident prone, confident, can change allegiance but is most bonded to their original owner. Seems like that matches up.
Skip the length.
Unbending. This Swede can be stubbornly clever when they want to. Applause to that.
Mumbo - Rowan, Unicorn hair, 8 ½, Quite bendy
"Rowan wood has always been much-favoured for wands, because it is reputed to be more protective than any other, and in my experience renders all manner of defensive charms especially strong and difficult to break. It is commonly stated that no dark witch or wizard ever owned a rowan wand, and I cannot recall a single instance where one of my own rowan wands has gone on to do evil in the world. Rowan is most happily placed with the clear-headed and the pure-hearted, but this reputation for virtue ought not to fool anyone – these wands are the equal of any, often the better, and frequently out-perform others in duels."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
Mumbo's pretty pure-hearted (but, honestly, which Hermit isn't?), and can be clear-minded (questionable, but moving along). I feel like Mumbo wouldn't easily be persuaded to become a Dark wizard, if at all (not Static, thathermitweirdo's Static has done some pretty evil things).
"Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages."
- Wand Cores, Wizarding World
A wand with a decent work/magic flow? Sure, why not?
Once again, skipping the length.
Since Mumbo expects things to go wrong, he's pretty flexible with his plans and doesn't resist change too much. So, his wand's quite bendy.
Ren - Alder, Unicorn hair, 10 ½, Unyielding
"Alder is an unyielding wood, yet I have discovered that its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable. Whereas most wand woods seek similarity in the characters of those they will best serve, alder is unusual in that it seems to desire a nature that is, if not precisely opposite to its own, then certainly of a markedly different type. When an alder wand is happily placed, it becomes a magnificent, loyal helpmate."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
Ren Diggity Dog is most definitely helpful, considerate and likeable, if not loveable. Since his wand is stubborn, Ren would probably have to have a lot of patience to combat that. In this case, opposites attract.
I don't know why, but I feel like Unicorn core suits him best.
Skip the length.
Remember, this wand is a weird one. It's nature is opposite to it's ideal owner. Ren's a pretty chill guy, so the opposite of that would be unyielding. (Also, it's directly stated above that this wand wood in general is unyielding, in case you didn't notice)
Scar - Sycamore, Unicorn hair, 7 ¼, Reasonably supple
"The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. It is a quirk of these handsome wands that they may combust if allowed to become 'bored', and many witches and wizards, settling down into middle age, are disconcerted to find their trusty wand bursting into flame in their hand as they ask it, one more time, to fetch their slippers. As may be deduced, the sycamore's ideal owner is curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrates a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world's most highly-prized wand woods."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
... The Scar of this universe literally has ADHD. Scar is also curious and adventurous, and he always seems so happy when learning something new. Also, I mean, a wand that'll self-combust when bored-
I'm also going to start skipping over the cores, unless it's one I have barely talked about yet.
Skipping the length again.
Reasonably supple. Scar's pretty chill, and he'll adapt pretty quickly when things don't go as planned (or when he's in general shenanigans).
Tango - Hornbeam, Phoenix feather, 11 ⅔, Pliant
"My own wand is made of hornbeam, and so it is with all due modesty that I state that hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession (though I prefer the term 'vision'), which will almost always be realised. Hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner's style of magic, and will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner's code of honour, whatever that might be, and will refuse to perform acts – whether for good or ill – that do not tally with their master's principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
Before I continue, I shall note that the Wand Woods article is written from Ollivander's perspective. So, fun fact: Ollivander's wand is also made from hornbeam.
But this ain't about Ollivander, this is about Tango of the Tek variety. What's Tango's singular passion? To figure out how everything works. What makes this thing do what, what makes that thing explode. Whether it's magical or not, he wants to know how it works, which is the most Ravenclaw thing ever (another fun fact: Ollivander was also a Ravenclaw during his school days).
"Phoenix feather wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won."
- Wand Cores, Wizarding World
Tango's a bit of a daredevil, so a feather from something that's impossible to kill? Dunno why, but it seems like it fits our favourite red-eyed redstoner.
Skipping the length.
Pliant, meaning fairly flexible. Compliant (not complement, that's a totally different word) is an example of this: meaning someone who can go along with instructions. Tango isn't very resistant to change, and will shift his plans if and when needed.
Xisuma - Pear, Dragon heartstring, 9 ¾, Fairly bendy
"This golden-toned wood produces wands of splendid magical powers, which give of their best in the hands of the warm-hearted, the generous and the wise. Possessors of pear wands are, in my experience, usually popular and well-respected. I do not know of a single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard. Pear wands are among the most resilient, and I have often observed that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
Xisumavoid is resilient. Why do I think this? He's nearly had 1,000 episodes of Hermitcraft! He's that level of dedication to go that far: it feels like Episode 900 was only yesterday. X is also pretty wise (cough Ravenclaw cough), and very warm-hearted. He's also pretty popular, just like this wand wood (he's almost at 2 million subs! If you're not subscribed to him, then go subscribe now! He deserves it!).
"Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner."
- Wand Cores, Wizarding World
I honestly don't have a solid argument, but I feel like this wand core fits Xisuma.
Skipping length.
Xisuma seems like a fairly flexible person. (You might notice that I'm starting to get lazy. That's because I've been working on this over the course of two days lol)
Zedaph - Dogwood, Unicorn hair, 11 ¾, Slightly springy
"Dogwood is one of my own personal favourites, and I have found that matching a dogwood wand with its ideal owner is always entertaining. Dogwood wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy."
- Wand Woods, Wizarding World
In case you didn't read the passage in Chapter Three like I'd asked you to do for Grian, then here you go. You get a source to read from anyway. Zedaph and Grian both feel like dogwood people: clever, mischievous, loud. (Fun Fact: my wand, according to Wizarding World, is made of dogwood. So, I know how to find my peeps 😎)
You all know enough about Unicorn cores by now.
SKIP THE LENGTH ONCE AGAIN.
Since this is the last one, I'm gonna also skip the flexibility.
Let me know if I accidentally skipped anyone or if there's someone you want to see. There's not anything else to say, so have an amazin' day/evening/night!
