Hermitober Day 7: Watching
Grian had only once been down into TFC's bunker, while the game of tag was played with a name tag instead of a potato. He knew and respected the mysterious eldest hermit, as did everyone. But it was hard to say he really knew anything about him. Most of the other Hermits didn't either as TFC took the title very seriously.
It didn't seem like his build was anything special when you first saw it; just a small hut, if one could call it that, made of old and worn wood. But if you opened the trapdoor that should lead to a cellar, you came to a large city built near the bedrock.
IT was while exploring this area that Grian realized part of why TFC was hardly ever seen on the server. In the vault were farms that could supply the entire server with food for months, devices to get materials for building, everything that someone could want.
Except company, he thought to himself. The blond builder knew that if he was doing stuff like this, he'd go stir crazy. Maybe that was why the secretive hermit had built so many rooms. But that didn't explain why the bedrooms were so bizarre. There was one that was upside down, one with a floor made of ice, one with every block slightly too far to the left, even one where every conceivable item that could be made of Diorite was diorite.
But it was when he came to what must've been TFC's actual room, Grian felt his blood run cold. There, in the back of the room, carved into the wall, was their symbol, made of bedrock itself. Clearly not some rough copy, then. It was the real thing.
"Ah, I see you've finally found your way down here." An unfamiliar voice said. "I was wondering when you would."
Grian silently cursed himself as he turned to face the old hermit standing in the doorway. His violet eyes seemed to twinkle as he gave the brit a sly grin. He didn't look like he had malicious intent, but the blond didn't know what to think at this point.
"You're a Watcher." He found himself saying.
TFC let out a low hum. "Yes and no. If you are referring to being chosen by the Endergods, then I can't argue with that. Do I go along with it? Well, I'm sure you can figure that out, Grian."
Grian looked around the room once more. Other than the tell-tale symbol, the room was pretty simplistic. A desk covered with papers was against one wall. A storage closet was built into the opposite. But then he realized the symbol itself. How the surfaces were being used as shelves for books and journals. The piece in the bottom right even had a cup of coffee on it.
No loyal Watcher would disrespect their own sign like that. Heck, not even Grian would have had the courage to do that.
"So you're like me then?" The red sweatered man asked. "But then..."
"Surely you've realized this world isn't as safe as people claim. Sure, the others think it is. It's probably best that they do. But there are many secrets and mysteries hidden within the world. It's only a matter of time before they declare it too dangerous." TFC explained.
"So that's what the bunker is for? To protect yourself when it happens?" Grian concluded.
"Not exactly. The rooms can be fixed; I have the materials to do so." Another non-answer that told Grian more than what was said.
"The rooms are for the others." The blond brit realized. "All of us have been messing around on the surface, while you're here building a safe and secure place for when Armageddon comes." Grian wasn't sure if he should feel guilty or impressed. "Do you think it's coming soon?"
TFC frowned. "Based on what I've heard's been going on around here, I'd say it'll be sooner than we think. But I'm not too worried."
Grian met his eyes and saw a familiar spark of determination in the older man's eyes. He knew that look well; he often saw it in a mirror. And he couldn't help but grin at what the purple-eyed man said next.
"Us Hermits will prove them wrong."

Okay, so this is based on the idea of "what if the friendly neighborhood cryptid was a watcher?" I don't know. I'm tired. Really tired. Oh well. I hope you enjoy.
Sea you later!
